De Bruyne on Napoli move: Lukaku wanted me to join

The Hindu7 days ago
Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne revealed on Saturday how compatriot and long-term national teammate Romelu Lukaku played a role in his move to Italian club Napoli.
De Bruyne is raring to go at Serie A champion Napoli after not being offered a contract extension by Manchester City, and said linking up with Lukaku was part of the appeal.
'Romelu was happy (about the move), I spoke with him in the national team (camp), he wanted me to join. I know Romelu since we were 13-years-old, so we are really tight together. When we played in Chelsea we lived together for two or three months,' the former City player told reporters.
'It makes it a little bit easier that I know him because he is somebody who can translate for me and it helps because he knows the coach, he knows the team.'

Regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, De Bruyne ended a glittering decade-long spell at City at the end of last season and joined Napoli on a free transfer last month.
'I have been in the Premier League for so long and in the end I made the decision to go out of England,' De Bruyne told reporters on Saturday.
'I have done what I have done and in the end I am a Man City player for life. It was also with the way that it ended for me, I thought, it is time to find a new challenge.
'When I had the whole project in front of me and then the fact that I could play in Italy and still play at a high level was exciting for me.'
De Bruyne, who turned 34 last month, said he had much to learn in Italy, but with polyglot Lukaku by his side, the learning curve looks far less steep as he adjusts to Antonio Conte's side.
'Napoli already are champions but they are still improving their squad... I am hoping that I can help the team grow and I will also learn from them, a new way of playing, a new competition,' De Bruyne added.
Napoli begins its 2025–26 Serie A campaign on August 13 with a trip to Sassuolo.

AC Milan Beat Liverpool 4-2 In Hong Kong Pre-Season Friendly

Last Updated: Rafael Leao opened the scoring for AC Milan while Noah Okafor struck twice while Loftus-Cheek once. Former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored as Premier League champions Liverpool were defeated 4-2 by AC Milan on Saturday in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong. Liverpool, featuring record signing Florian Wirtz in his first start, dominated much of the game under the closed roof at Kai Tak Stadium, but their shaky defence was exposed on the break, leading to all four Milan goals. Rafael Leao put the Italian side ahead in the 10th minute, and Dominik Szoboszlai's superb strike equalised 16 minutes later, making it 1-1 at half-time. However, goals from Loftus-Cheek and substitute Noah Okafor, along with Cody Gakpo's late header, secured victory for AC Milan. Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged there were positives to take from the match but admitted his team needs improvement before their first competitive match, the Community Shield against Crystal Palace on August 10. 'I saw a few good things," he told reporters, referring to the first half when a predominantly first-choice Liverpool created numerous chances but only converted one. Slot made nine changes at the break, resulting in a makeshift defence that was repeatedly caught out. 'We wanted to give 20 players some playing time, so too many players didn't play in their own position. We were a bit too open. We must improve in certain areas because we were counter-attacked too much today." Loftus-Cheek, who has also played for Crystal Palace and Fulham, said it was special to score against Liverpool. 'It's nice to play against a Premier League team again," said Loftus-Cheek, whose team had lost 1-0 to Arsenal in a friendly on Wednesday. 'Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world. It was a good test for us tonight. It's just about feeling better physically, gelling as a team, and there's a lot for us to improve. So we'll take that and move on." Liverpool's Hong Kong fans vastly outnumbered those supporting AC Milan in the sellout crowd of 49,704. They paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota, who passed away this month in a car crash. Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish laid flowers in front of fans, who held up a mosaic spelling out 'DJ20" in honour of Jota's number 20 shirt, which has been retired by the club. Leao also remembered his fellow Portuguese player Jota, offering a silent prayer and forming the number 20 with his fingers after scoring the opener. Wirtz played 45 minutes and looked comfortable directing operations, showing hints of why Bayer Leverkusen were paid a reported British transfer record of $150 million for the German playmaker. Other new Liverpool signings, defenders Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, both came on as substitutes at half-time. Another defender, Joe Gomez, has flown home for treatment of a minor Achilles problem. Striker Hugo Ekitike, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported $92 million, was not ready to take part, having only flown in to join his new teammates two days earlier. Liverpool started without a recognised central striker as Darwin Nunez, who was injured, and Luis Diaz, linked with a move away from Anfield, were left out. Liverpool will now fly to Japan to face Yokohama F-Marinos on Wednesday. English Premier League clubs splurge £1.63bn in current transfer window; Liverpool biggest spenders, Arsenal third, Manchester United fourth

From the start of June — when the transfer window opened — until now, English Premier League clubs have collectively spent £1.63 billion on players, a BBC report revealed. Citing data from Transfermarkt, the report added that the last season's top four teams are five of the biggest spenders heading into the new season. Manchester United, who finished a lowly 15th, are the only team from the bottom half who are in the top five, ahead of their bitter rivals Manchester City. Out of the £1.63 billion, a little more than £1 billion was spent by just six teams — Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, in that order. After winning the league last season by 10 points, Liverpool haven't wasted time on bolstering their squad. They are comfortably ahead in the spending spree and have shelled out £269 million so far in the current transfer window. That isn't surprising after they signed German international Florian Wirtz for a staggering £116 million and France forward Hugo Ekitike for £69 million, which could rise to £79 million, as per the report. They have also spent £40.8 million on Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and £35 million on Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. Fresh from the Club World Cup title, Chelsea — who finished fourth in the league last season — have spent £212 million so far. Their biggest spending has been on forward Joao Pedro, who was signed for £60 million from Brighton, and Jamie Gittens, the Borussia Dortmund left-winger, for £56 million. After finishing second in each of the last three seasons, Arsenal have shored up their attack with the signing of striker Victor Gyokeres for £63.5 million. Their other major buys have been Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £60 million and former Chelsea winger Noni Madueke for £48.5 million. Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, is leaving no stone unturned after Manchester United suffered their worst campaign in the Premier League era last season and have spent more than City. United have splurged £133.5 million so far, of which £65 million was spent on Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Brazilian Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million. Manchester City, meanwhile, have spent about £127 million. Most of it has been on Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki.
