Kevin De Bruyne 'held transfer talks with Liverpool' as Man City impact emerges
Kevin De Bruyne has decided to join Napoli after ending his almost decade-long stint with Manchester City and is said to have spoken to Liverpool about his future earlier this year Kevin De Bruyne had a conversation with Liverpool before committing to Napoli this summer. The midfielder's contract was left to expire by Manchester City after the playmaker played a prominent role in the club's successes under Pep Guardiola. De Bruyne signed for City almost a decade ago in then club-record deal for £55million. The Belgian had indicated that he would like to stay at the club this summer, but the team's hierarchy ultimately decided his journey would come to a closer. That left De Bruyne in a position to consider his options, and while Napoli ultimately proved persuasive, the 33-year-old had alternative discussions. A 'short conversation' occurred with Liverpool, while Juventus enquired over a move and Inter Milan were unable to find space in their squad, as per the Athletic. But the choice came down to Chicago Fire and Napoli with the Serie A side winning out. And Manchester City may have even played a role in aiding De Bruyne's decision. It is reported that De Bruyne was in-part motivated to opt for Napoli in order to prove City wrong for letting him go. The Champions League and the opportunity to play under Antonio Conte were said to be decisive factors. De Bruyne noted earlier this year that he was 'surprised but I just have to accept it' after City made their decision. The veteran told the club he still had a lot to give but never received an offer. De Bruyne's move to Napoli was announced early in June as a picture of the Belgium international alongside Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis was posted. The Premier League legend included a short message to his new club: "Sono qui." That translates to 'I am here' in English. De Laurentiis also posted the photograph on his social media pages, along with the comment: "Benvenuto Kevin!" That translates into 'Welcome Kevin' in English. De Bruyne will hope to have as big an impact as Scott McTominay following his move to Napoli last summer. The Scotland international helped the club to Serie A glory and earned the accolade of being named the Italian top-flight's Player of the Year.

The Athletic report that even Liverpool had a conversation with De Bruyne over a shock switch to Anfield. The Belgian spent much of his time in England challenging with Liverpool at the top of the table and it is uncertain whether he would have agreed to join City's rivals. However, it's suggested that talks were held between Liverpool and De Bruyne's camp, but those did not materialise into anything serious. Reports claim that De Bruyne did not have any interest in a squad role and so Liverpool were unlikely to be an appealing option. Mohamed Salah is one man who would have been keen to see De Bruyne make the short trip from Manchester to Liverpool. Before the midfielder's move to Napoli was made official, Salah joked that Liverpool were keeping room for him in the squad. 'He's done a phenomenal job at City, and he was great for the league,' the Liverpool star said. 'I really wish him the best…and we have a space for him!'

De Bruyne, 33, linked up with the newly minted Italian champions earlier this month after being told he would not be offered a new deal by City. And Grealish looks set to follow the Belgian maestro out of the Etihad before the summer is out after being axed from City's squad for the FIFA Club World Cup. A host of clubs have been linked with a move for Grealish, however, it emerged earlier this week that City have received no offers for the 29-year-old England star. Napoli are the latest club to be credited with an interest in Grealish - and De Bruyne is said to have been sounded out by Antonio Conte over a potential move for the former Aston Villa man. As per The Sun, De Bruyne has given Grealish a glowing reference to the Napoli boss in the hope that the club will make a move for the winger. City are prepared to take a significant financial hit on a player they paid £100million for back in the summer of 2021. And Grealish would likely have to take a huge pay cut in order to move to Napoli, with the report claiming he earns around £300,000-a-week. Napoli are also considering a move for Alejandro Garncho - who they linked with back in January - and Jadon Sancho, both of whom are free to leave Manchester United. But it remains to be seen which of the players they will actually pursue given they have no need for all three. Pep Guardiola recently confirmed that Grealish is available to leave the club, explaining: 'It was a conversation between him and the club and they decide. Jack is an exceptional player, the only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions, and we decide that he has to play - and the club was honest, he was honest. 'We decide the best is that he has a place that he can feel he can play and come back to be the player that he was in the year of the treble or all his career at Aston Villa; without him it would have been impossible or more difficult to achieve the treble. 'The fact is the last two seasons he hasn't played much minutes and he has to come back to play and get the butterflies back in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has.'

Despite already signing Man City legend De Bruyne, Napoli have expressed interest in signing a number of other Premier League stars this summer. Conte is keen to strengthen his squad to boost Napoli's chances of defending the Serie A title and competing in the Champions League. Manchester City's Grealish and Manchester United's Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho have all emerged as targets for the Italian club. Sancho and Garnacho are believed to be keen on move to Naples after being deemed surplus to requirements by Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim. Ex-Chelsea loanee Sancho was hoping to earn a permanent move to Stamford Bridge but the Blues instead paid £5m in compensation to send him back to United. Garnacho has also been linked with Chelsea after being put up for sale by decision-makers at Manchester United. But Napoli are only expected to sign one of Sancho, Garnacho or Grealish and De Bruyne is making the case for his old teammate. According to The Sun, Conte has been asking De Bruyne about Grealish's credentials and has received a glowing reference from the Belgium international. Man City spent a record-breaking £100m to sign Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021 but the 29-year-old is expected to leave following a frustrating 2024-25 campaign. Grealish struggled for game-time under Pep Guardiola and was then left out of Manchester City's Club World Cup squad. Tottenham are believed to be the current favourites to sign Grealish but De Bruyne is doing everything he can to bring him to Naples. Grealish accepts a move is necessary to revive his career and boost his chances of being included in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for next summer's World Cup. Asked about Grealish's future at the Etihad Stadium last week, Guardiola said: 'He had a conversation with the club and [we] decided [what was for] the best. 'Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decision. We decide that he has to play. The club was honest, he was honest. 'Incredible love and respect [for him] and we decide the best is to stay [behind] and have a place [at home] that he can feel like he can come back to be the player like he was in the year of the treble or all his career in Aston Villa.
