India Vs England: Sai Sudharsan Emulates WV Raman, Levels 37-Year-Old Record

Sai Sudharsan has become India's 317th Test cap, debuting against England after a stellar IPL 2025.
Star India batter Sai Sudharsan on Friday became the country's 317th Test cap, as he received his Baggy Blue from Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of the first Test against England in Leeds, in what is expected to be his big foot forward into international cricket, after a purple-cap-winning campaign in IPL 2025.
Although multiple experts have touted Sudharsan as an all-format player for India, his first-class numbers aren't at the greatest level yet compared to most other top-order batters who made their Test debuts for India.
Notably, Sudharsan is making his Test debut with a first-class average of 39.93, becoming just the second top-order Indian batter since WV Raman, also from Tamil Nadu, back in 1988, to make a debut in the longest format with an average below 40.
Sudharsan was a breakout talent from TNPL who was fast-tracked into Tamil Nadu's teams across formats and is remembered for his 47-ball 96 in the IPL 2023 final against the Chennai Super Kings.
Sudharsan made his first-class debut in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, against Hyderabad in December. He made a starry debut, scoring 179 and 42 in the two innings to play a match-winning role in that game for his team.
Sudharsan finished that season as the second-highest run-scorer for Tamil Nadu, with 572 runs in seven matches at an average of 47.66 and two hundreds to his name.
Sudharsan's last first-class appearance came against Vidarbha in the quarterfinal of the recent Ranji Trophy, but he scored just seven and two in both innings.
Sudharsan currently has 1957 runs from 29 matches with seven hundreds to his name, besides five half-centuries.
Notably, on his Test debut against the Windies at his home ground in Chennai in January 1988, Raman batted at 4 in the first innings and could score just nine runs. In the second innings, he batted at 3, the same position where Sudharsan is supposed to bat, and scored a crucial 83 off 205 balls.
Raman's knock included a 33-run partnership with Kris Srikkanth, an 87-run stand with Mohammad Azharuddin and a 61-run partnership with Ajay Sharma, before his knock was ended by Courtney Walsh.
India went on to win the match by 255 runs, riding on Kapil Dev's first-innings century, Narendra Hirwani's 16-wicket haul across both innings.
Sai Sudharsan emulates Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid
Notably, Sudharsan will be making his Test debut on the same day as ace India batter Kohli and former captains Ganguly and Dravid, who also received their maiden Test cap on June 20.
While Kohli made his Test debut against the Windies on June 20, 2011 in Kingston, Ganguly and Dravid played their first Test on the same day, also against England, on June 20, 1996 at the Lord's.

2nd Test, ENG vs IND LIVE UPDATES: Indian pacers will aim to get early wickets on Day 3 to tighten visitors' grip on the match England vs India 2nd Test Day 3 LIVE Updates: The Indian cricket team could not have asked for a better position in the second Test after two days of play, as the visitors currently lead the game by 510 runs in the first innings. England ended Day 2 at 77 for 3 in reply to India's 587. The Indian team was initially worried about Bumrah's absence in the match, but his replacement, Akash Deep, stepped up and took crucial wickets to push the hosts on the back foot early. Siraj also chipped in with one to worsen England's woes. On Day 3 today, Shubman Gill would love nothing more than his bowlers delivering in style and wrapping up the English innings in one or one-and-a-half sessions. They can achieve this if they manage to take two or three wickets in the first hour of play. However, England, with an in-form middle and lower order, will fancy their chances and try to first bat through the first two sessions before bringing their Bazball approach into play. Supported well by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, Gill remained unflustered despite England's various tactics, including short-ball ploys and defensive field settings. England's bowlers struggled on a flat pitch, and Gill looked set for a triple century before falling to a tired shot. After his dismissal, the innings wrapped up quickly. In response, England were rocked early by Akash Deep, who struck twice in two balls, and Mohammed Siraj, who removed Zak Crawley. Joe Root and Harry Brook survived some nervy moments to guide England to 77/3 at stumps, but with a huge deficit still looming, the hosts remain under serious pressure heading into Day 3.

Neeraj Chopra On Getting His Namesake Event: 'I'm In A Dream...'

Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra is on the cusp of realising a personal dream, competing in a javelin event christened in his honour. He views the 'Neeraj Chopra Classic" not just as a personal milestone, but as the dawn of a significant new chapter for Indian athletics, one that he hopes will usher in an era of multiple world-class competitions within the country. The Neeraj Chopra Classic is scheduled to unfold at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, featuring a lineup of top-tier athletes. Chopra himself has expressed a commitment to elevating the event's stature in the years to come. 'I feel like I'm in a dream," Chopra stated at a pre-event press conference on Friday. 'Medals are a different thing. But I've given something like this to India and to Indian athletes. I'm very happy about that. This is the beginning of a new chapter in our athletics." He added, 'The support I'm getting from everyone. From the government, from KOA (Karnataka Olympic Association), from World Athletics, from the sponsors… I feel like we can make this event even better." Chopra articulated a clear vision: to see India host athletic competitions on par with those regularly held in traditional powerhouses like the United States and European nations. 'This is the beginning of international competitions in India," he asserted. 'As we see, there are so many international competitions in Germany and such nations – A category, B, C etc. and every week, there's a competition." 'So, this is what I want in India, as there should be at least 4, 5, 6 competitions which are world class. The athletes should get a chance and people should see them play. That will be very good for our sport," he explained. 'The athlete in me is always up for the competition," Chopra declared. 'That's why I'm trying to manage everything. My team is also handling so many things. But the athlete in me is always up. I'm training hard." For Chopra, the event transcends personal glory; it represents the realisation of a long-held aspiration for Indian sport. 'I'm very happy that this is finally happening. I was at the gym yesterday and I saw other athletes throwing and that has been my dream. I will say it again that I never thought there would be an event like this. 'I never thought I would represent India and win a medal. All that has happened. Now, there's peace in my mind that something like this is happening."
