Transport Ministry To Roll Out BAS.MY Medik Soon For Passengers With Limited Mobility

Barnama6 days ago
KANGAR, July 28 — The Transport Ministry will soon introduce a new service, BAS.MY Medik, under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme to provide accessible transport for passengers with limited mobility.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative will require BAS.MY operators to provide at least one dedicated van to serve passengers using wheelchairs or travelling to clinics or dialysis centres.
'The BAS.MY Medik service will be offered at an affordable fare,' Loke said at the launch of the SBST BAS.MY Kangar service today, with Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
He noted that transportation remains a challenge for many patients, particularly those who require frequent medical treatment.
'For example, dialysis patients typically need to travel three times a week. Taking a taxi to and from the centre can cost RM20 to RM30 per trip, which is a heavy burden.
'With BAS.MY Medik, the van will pick them up from home and take them directly to the treatment centre at a much lower fare. This service will be introduced by bus operators soon,' he said.
Loke said the Federal government has allocated RM39.7 million over five years to support the continued operation of BAS.MY Kangar, to enhance public transport access and improve the well-being of residents.
The BAS.MY service in Kangar currently operates nine routes, including a cross-border link to Alor Setar, Kedah, which should be fully utilised by the public, he added.
'Before the COVID-19 pandemic, SBST Kangar recorded a monthly ridership of around 30,000 passengers from 2016 to 2019. However, for the first half of 2025, the monthly average has dropped to just 12,071 passengers,' he said.

Govt unveils rehab-focused anti-drug plan

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Shamsul pictured with attendees present at the event. KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government is boosting drug prevention and rehabilitation efforts by establishing Drug Assessment Centres (DAC) and working closely with community-based groups. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah warned of increasing synthetic drug use, including flavoured mushroom vapes, and called for urgent, evidence-based interventions. DACs mark a shift from traditional detention, focusing on medical and psychosocial assessments, in line with amendments to the Drug Dependants Act 1983 that prioritise rehabilitation over punishment. The Cabinet has approved the Anti-Drug Communication Plan 2025–2027 to promote behavioural change, accurate messaging and cross-sector cooperation, alongside the launch of District Community Synergy Committees (JSKD) to strengthen grassroots coordination. Shamsul urged NGOs to embrace digital tools for youth outreach, stressing that drug prevention requires the shared commitment of agencies, families, educators and the wider community. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM40 biliion allocation to implement healthcare reforms

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 Text Size: Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2. Kuala Lumpur: The Federal Government has allocated RM40 billion under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026 to 2030 to implement wide-ranging reforms in the healthcare sector, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced Thursday. He said the healthcare reform agenda is a vital government initiative to ensure sustainable health financing while expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare services for all Malaysians, which is also aimed at increasing service options for patients without compromising on cost or quality. To strengthen medical supply security, Anwar said domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing would be encouraged, while the use of generic medicines in both the public and private sectors would be significantly increased. 'Pro-health taxes will be expanded from sugar to products such as tobacco, vape and alcohol, not just for revenue but to encourage behavioural change and curb the increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which is increasingly worrying,' he said. Another key objective of the reform, Anwar said, is to reduce the out-of-pocket healthcare expenses borne by citizens. Under the 13MP, more hospitals and clinics - including those in dilapidated condition - will be built or upgraded to improve healthcare delivery nationwide. Major projects slated for development include Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar 2 in Seremban, Hospital Sultanah Aminah 2 in Johor Bahru, the Northern Region Cancer Centre in Sungai Petani, the Sabah Heart Centre at Hospital Queen Elizabeth II in Kota Kinabalu, and the Sarawak Cancer Centre. To address long-standing workforce challenges, the government will also introduce a national framework for health sector talent development. 'This includes initiatives covering pre-service training, licensing, recruitment, placement, and career development, all aimed at retaining and nurturing skilled professionals in the healthcare system,' Anwar said. Anwar also announced that health record management will be strengthened as part of the core strategy for digitising Malaysia's healthcare infrastructure, which will enhance interoperability between healthcare facilities and enable seamless patient data access. The digitisation push will also lay the groundwork for high-impact health analytics powered by artificial intelligence (AI), further enhancing the quality and responsiveness of healthcare services in Malaysia, he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt mulls nationwide vape ban

by SHAUQI WAHAB THE government is considering implementing a nationwide ban on the sale and use of electronic cigarettes or vape products. This move is part of a broader public health agenda aimed at protecting the youth from the harmful effects of nicotine and vaping-related products. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the proposal is still under careful consideration, with the government evaluating various legal, enforcement and public health implications before reaching a final decision. 'We are conducting a comprehensive review to assess the effectiveness of current control measures and the need for more holistic policies to safeguard the well-being of the people,' he said in response to a supplementary question in Parliament on July 28, noting that any decision on a full ban remains under the jurisdiction of the federal government. To this end, a meeting of the Expert Committee was held on July 22, and the Ministry of Health (MOH) will soon hold inter-ministerial discussions with four key ministries: The Ministry of Finance (MOF), Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). Dr Dzulkefly was responding to a question by Datuk Ahmad Saad @ Yahaya (Perikatan Nasional (PN)-Pokok Sena) regarding the federal government's stance on several state governments' decision to halt the issuance of vape retail licenses. He added that enforcement actions are being intensified. A distributor in Kinta, Perak, was fined RM20,000 for advertising offences, while another in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, faced a RM30,000 charge for online vape sales. The Health minister also welcomed the decision made by six state governments — Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah and Pahang — to stop issuing or renewing vape business licenses. 'We support these decisions, as licensing of business premises falls under the jurisdiction of local authorities, which are governed by state governments,' he said. Dr Dzulkefly acknowledged that while the current enforcement framework aligns with the government's public health aspirations, there are still gaps in control. The restrictions only apply to specific premises such as specialty stores and do not yet cover convenience stores or general retailers. He stressed that the MOH is prioritising strict regulatory control through the newly passed Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852). 'This includes mandatory product registration, bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship, restrictions on sales, and prohibitions on smoking in designated smoke-free areas,' he added. To ensure comprehensive enforcement of Act 852, the ministry will officially launch an integrated nationwide operation dubbed Ops Selamat Paru-Paru this Friday. This operation aims to ensure that enforcement of Act 852 is conducted comprehensively, in a coordinated and effective manner across the country,' he said. He emphasised that enforcement needs to go beyond just state actions to revoke business licenses.
