All the taxes and tariffs you pay on cellular services
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released a comprehensive breakdown of current mobile service tariffs in the country, including charges for voice calls, data, and SMS. The disclosure comes amid growing public concern over high usage costs and taxes.
According to PTA, the basic 'Pay As You Go' (PayG) tariffs—applicable when users are not subscribed to any packages—range between Rs3.2 and Rs3.6 per minute for voice calls. Data usage is billed at Rs3.3 to Rs5 per megabyte, while SMS costs between Rs2.15 and Rs2.5 per message.
However, mobile users face a significant tax burden. A Rs100 card recharge effectively credits only Rs86.96 due to a 15% Withholding Tax (WHT).
In addition, a 19.5% General Sales Tax (GST) is applied to each individual usage—calls, data sessions, and messages—amounting to an estimated Rs14.19. The combined tax load on a single top-up reaches Rs27.23.
PTA clarified that GST is also applicable to all bundles, offers, and subscription-based services. The tax policy applies equally to both prepaid and postpaid customers, covering nearly all segments of mobile users.
From a regulatory standpoint, PTA requires operators with Significant Market Power (SMP)—currently Jazz—to obtain prior approval before raising tariffs or launching new packages. These operators must submit detailed proposals, including justifications, consumer impact assessments, and industry comparisons.
In contrast, non-SMP operators like Ufone, Telenor, and Zong have the autonomy to set tariffs independently, though all providers are mandated to inform customers at least seven days before implementing any price changes.
While PTA did not disclose the date of the most recent tariff revision, the regulator affirmed that any proposed changes by SMPs undergo a strict evaluation process, considering operational costs, inflationary pressures, and broader market trends.

Pakistan's power generation increases 8% in June
Power generation in Pakistan clocked in at 13,744 GWh in June 2025, an increase of over 8% MoM compared to the generation recorded in April 2025, suggesting an uptick in economic activity. Back in May 2025, power generation stood at 12,755 GWh. Analysts noted that rising temperatures and a significant increase in hydel generation i.e. 12% MoM also helped in demand improvement. On a yearly basis, power generation surged by 2% as compared to 13,461 GWh in June 2024. In FY25, power generation remained largely flattish, increasing by 0.1% YoY to 127,159 GWh compared to 127,059 GWh in the SPLY. 'Power generation in Pakistan in FY25 has remained flat on a YoY basis because companies relied largely on their power generation throughout the year amidst expensive grid energy,' said Topline Securities. 'The government introduced off off-grid levy in February 2025 to discourage the use of captives and encourage companies to move to the grid. 'Alongside this, the prime minister also reduced overall unit cost by over Rs5/kwh in Apr, May and Jun 2025 after savings from negotiations with IPPs and relocation of PDL amount to electricity saving. As a result of this, in 4QFY25, the electricity production was up 7%,' it noted. On the other hand, the total cost of generating electricity in Pakistan was up 1%, clocking in at Rs7.9 KWh in June 2025 compared to Rs7.8 KWh registered in May 2025. On a yearly basis, the cost was down 9%, compared to Rs8.6 KWh in June 2024. In June, hydel emerged as the leading source of power generation, accounting for 39% of the generation mix, to become the largest source of electricity generation. This was followed by RLNG, which accounted for 16% of the overall generation, ahead of coal local, which accounted for 11% of the power generation share. Among renewables, wind and solar generation amounted to 4% and 1%, respectively, of the generation mix.

Huawei Technologies license for vehicle tracking services suspended: PTA
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said that Huawei Technologies (Private) Limited was granted Data CVAS License No DIR(L)/CVAS-877-PTA/2017, dated 8th September 2017, for tracking its vehicle fleet in Pakistan, said a press release. The company, however, did not commence the intended operations, and the license was accordingly suspended solely due to non-commencement of services. However, a segment of the media reported the suspension of the said license, creating the impression that Huawei Pakistan's overall service provision had been suspended. It is clarified that this suspension applies exclusively to the aforementioned license for vehicle tracking services and has no impact on any other operations provided by Huawei Technologies (Private) Limited to telecom operators in Pakistan. Lahore zoo offers 50% discount on recreational facilities
In a citizen-friendly move, the Lahore Zoo administration has announced a 50% discount on several recreational facilities to provide financial relief and boost footfall at one of the city's most visited attractions. While entry and parking fees remain unchanged, notable discounts have been introduced for key attractions, including the Reptile House, Fish Aquarium, Holoverse, Virtual Reality, and Mixed Reality experiences. Under the revised pricing, tickets for the Reptile House and Fish Aquarium—previously priced at Rs200—are now available for Rs100. Similarly, tickets for Holoverse (formerly Rs300), Virtual Reality (Rs200), and Mixed Reality (Rs100) are also being offered at half price. Zoo officials stated that the initiative aims to offer economic relief to citizens and renew public interest in zoo-based recreational activities. This development comes just a day after the private firm previously managing the zoo withdrew from its contractual role. As a result, the Lahore Zoo administration has assumed direct control over ticketing and operational matters. Officials emphasised that the discounts reflect a broader commitment to making the zoo more accessible and enjoyable for families and nature enthusiasts throughout the city.
