Cubs riding high in NL, welcome runs-hungry Royals

Reuters3 days ago
July 21 - After posting a series win to begin the second half of the regular season, the Chicago Cubs take a share of the National League's best record into an interleague series with the visiting Kansas City Royals on Monday.
Chicago (59-40) had its four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday in a 6-1 home setback to the Boston Red Sox but has won consecutive three-game series against a pair of potential postseason teams in the New York Yankees and Red Sox.
The Milwaukee Brewers also are 59-40 to share the view from atop the NL Central.
"I think this group really believes in itself and believes in all of the guys in the room," Cubs left fielder Ian Happ said. "I think you saw that just in the way we played this series. I think we really played solid, fundamental baseball the whole time, and even though the game (Sunday) got away from us a little bit, it could have been the other way around on a few swings of the bat."
The Cubs will elect to throw a bullpen game on Monday and start reliever Ryan Brasier (0-0, 1.04 ERA) before presumably reaching deeper into the 'pen. Brasier has made 18 relief appearances in his first season with Chicago, striking out 14 batters and walking three in 17 1/3 innings. Of Brasier's 315 career outings, just five have come as a starter, including four with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024.
Brasier has allowed one run in 6 1/3 frames for a 1.42 ERA in six career appearances against the Royals.
Kansas City will begin its fifth consecutive interleague series in Chicago on Monday. The Royals have dropped four of their last six games but salvaged a series in Miami on Sunday with a 7-4 victory against the Marlins.
In a disappointing year for Kansas City -- which sits 5 1/2 games out of the final American League wild-card spot -- the club's 343 runs rank last in the AL and are ahead of only the Pittsburgh Pirates' 333 in the majors. The Royals did score seven runs in two of their three games in Miami, including in their 7-4 win on Sunday.
The team's saving grace has been its pitching staff, which ranks second in baseball with a 3.49 ERA. Helping boost that number is rookie Noah Cameron (3-4, 2.31), who will make his 13th start of the year on Monday.
Cameron, 26, has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three straight starts. Last time out, the left-hander struck out eight batters in 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a no-decision against the New York Mets on July 13. Kansas City won 3-2.
"It was a good day," Cameron said after his last start. "Obviously, when you can command the ball and they are getting bad swings on stuff and I get really good defense behind me, it was an easy day."
A seventh-round pick by the Royals in 2021, Cameron will face the Cubs for the first time in his young major league career. Kansas City will look for its first series win over Chicago since sweeping the Cubs in August 2021.

Packers move Bo Melton from WR to CB for training camp

July 23 - The Green Bay Packers are shifting Bo Melton from wide receiver to cornerback during training camp to see what he can do in the defensive secondary. Melton, 26, made eight receptions on 17 targets for 91 yards in 17 games as a second-year reserve last season, and has 24 career catches for 309 yards and one score in 22 games (one start). He has also caught three passes for 42 yards and one touchdown in three career playoff games. "Bo is going to spend most of his time at corner," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said at a press conference on Wednesday. "We know what he can do for us as a receiver and on special teams. He's been an important part of our football team the last couple of years. We're excited to see what he might be able to do at corner on defense. "I think we switched his number to 16 because that looks a little bit better than the 80 he was running out there at camp," Gutekunst continued. "He'll spend most of his time, especially these first three or four weeks, at corner." Melton also is a gunner on special teams, and the team began to try him at cornerback during the offseason workout program. The Seattle Seahawks selected Melton in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Rutgers, where he played 56 games at receiver and had 164 catches for 2,011 yards and 11 touchdowns from 2017-21. His brother, Max Melton, 23, was a cornerback at Rutgers who plays for the Arizona Cardinals. "When (the change) was brought to my attention, I started working a little more, working with some DB trainers, and I feel like I'm good with the movements," Bo Melton said. "I just have to keep indulging in the playbook." Melton leaves a crowded wide receivers room headed by veterans Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson, the latter of whom is recovering from an ACL tear. The Packers went against their history and selected a wide receiver in the first round, speedster Matthew Golden, as well as third-round pick Savion Williams. Green Bay also signed seventh-year pro Mecole Hardman, 27, a three-time Super Bowl champion with Kansas City (2019, 2022-23). Among the veteran cornerbacks on the Packers are Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine and Nate Hobbs. Green Bay released two-time All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander on June 9 amid a contentious relationship between the two parties. The Packers were seeking to restructure his contract, frustrated over his lack of availability. Alexander, 28, appeared in just 14 games over the past two seasons combined. Alexander signed with the Baltimore Ravens on June 18. --Field Level Media

Nick Saban and Arch Manning both being lined up by shock NFL team for 2026, insider claims

The Cleveland Browns are eyeing shock moves for both Nick Saban and Arch Manning next year, NFL insider Colin Cowherd has sensationally claimed. After selecting Shedeur Sanders with the 144th overall pick in this year's draft, the Browns now have an extremely crowded quarterback room as the newly-arrived rookie battles it out with Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett for the starting spot. Deshaun Watson, who still has two years remaining on his fully guaranteed $230million contract, is also still on the roster. Yet according to Cowherd, the Browns are already keeping tabs on Texas quarterback Manning ahead of next year's draft - and he explained how bringing him to Cleveland could also attract Saban to the head-coaching job. 'This is the worst kept secret in the South,' the FS1 host said on his 'The Herd' show. 'Haslam, Jimmy, owner of the Browns — huge SEC, Tennessee booster - leans heavily on the Manning family. Very close to the Manning family. 'Saban is incredibly close not only to Jimmy Haslam, but also to the Manning family as well. So Saban, if he could land, I'm told, a top quarterback - like [Jim] Harbaugh going to the Chargers for [Justin] Herbert — he would take a phone call from the NFL. Cowherd also repeatedly stressed: 'This is not a conspiracy theory.' Saban, 73, brought the curtain down on his legendary college career in January 2024, but rumors swirled earlier last week that he was weighing up a return to the sidelines a couple of years after his final season in Tuscaloosa. Now the seven-time national champion, who has been working on ESPN's College GameDay since retiring, is being linked with the top job in Cleveland by Cowherd. Saban does have history with the Browns, too, after serving as their defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick from 1991-94. The Browns selecting Manning in next year's draft could be a big factor in tempting him out of retirement, though it remains to be seen which number pick they land after the 2025 NFL season. Heisman Trophy candidate Arch, the oldest son of Cooper Manning, is set to take over as starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns later this year after predecessor Quinn Ewers declared for this year's NFL Draft. The 21-year-old earned two starts last season as Texas eventually slumped to defeat against Ohio State in the college football playoff semifinals. In his pair of starts, Manning completed 61 passes out of 90 while throwing for 939 yards and nine touchdowns.

EXCLUSIVE Ted Lasso RETURNS to America as filming begins with Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple

Coach Lasso is back on the field, and this time, he's returned to home turf. On Monday, production kicked off on the highly anticipated next installment of Ted Lasso, which is being filmed in none other than Kansas City—Jason Sudeikis's real-life hometown. In images, obtained by several of the show's fan-favorite cast members, including Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, and Jeremy Swift, were all seen reprising their iconic roles on location at a sunny soccer field. The stateside pivot marks the first time Ted Lasso has filmed in the U.S. after three Emmy-winning seasons set across the pond. Additional scenes are still expected to shoot in London, where the fictional AFC Richmond made their unlikely rise. While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, Sudeikis was seen in his character's signature mustache and sweater combo. Meanwhile, Temple rocked a tied-up yellow shirt with a soccer ball on it, black studded miniskirt and 'KC' baseball cap. Waddingham also opted for a casual ensemble, which consisted of a navy 'Kanas City' tee and pants. The cast's sighting comes after Apple TV's head of development, Matt Cherniss, told Deadline he has 'high hopes for season four of Ted Lasso.' 'I have high hopes for season four of Ted Lasso, we're just getting down that road. I don't know what more can be said about Ted Lasso that hasn't already been said, and we're so excited that it's coming back,' he said in July. Cherniss continued: 'I don't think I want to say anything about the direction that the show is going, only that I think if you love Ted Lasso you're gonna love the next season.' Four months earlier, Sudeikis confirmed there will be a season four of Ted Lasso while appearing on Travis and Jason Kelce's New Heights. 'Ted's coaching a women's team, so there, that's it,' the actor teased. Lasso, the American football-turned soccer coach played by Sudeikis, had coached fictional Premier League side AFC Richmond in the first three seasons of the show. The stateside pivot marks the first time Ted Lasso has filmed in the U.S. after three Emmy-winning seasons set across the pond In response to Sudeikis' revelation for season 4, Travis asked if that meant Lasso would be returning to his native US. 'That's too many questions,' Sudeikis playfully replied, before noting he didn't actually know the answer himself. Sudeikis added that coming up with a new season was both 'exciting' and 'daunting.' 'Because we told the story we wanted to tell, but there's more there and it is a neat group of people to work with,' he said. The former SNL star, 49, noted that 'the universe kept just saying things' after Hollywood emerged from the actors' and writers' strike in 2023. '... Whether [it was kind folks at airports, or on the internet, or friends of my folks or just other people in the industry... and I was just like, 'Ok, I hear you.'' The series' co-creator, Bill Lawrence, gave life to a possible fourth season of the show in August, when he suggested the decision ultimately lied with Sudeikis. 'As fans, we'd all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we're all down with it,' he told Collider. The show's return comes after earning 20 Primetime Emmy Awards in its first season and winning seven including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Sudeikis. 'Ted's coaching a women's team, so there, that's it,' the actor teased Since premiering in 2020, the series has received 61 Primetime Emmy Awards nods. It's also received a Producers Guild of America Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Writers Guild of America Awards, as well as nominations for five Directors Guild of America Awards. It has received two Golden Globe Awards, seven Critics' Choice Television Awards, and three TCA Awards. At this time, no release date for Season 4 of Ted Lasso has been revealed.
