Delhi-based tech expert Shayak Majumder says, 'The primary concern isn't that machines will start thinking like humans, but that humans will stop thinking critically in a world shaped by AI assistants. I have always compared the advent of AI to the advent of internet. Earlier there were concerns of jobs getting eaten up, but about two-three decades later, we have learned how to leverage internet to our advantage. For now, we need to start getting adept with AI tools, to stay ahead of the curve. The 'dark side' of AI lies not in its intelligence, but in how we choose to wield it, regulate it, and remain accountable for its impact.'
AI creating life; AI going beyond its mandate to serve mankind could bring us to the brink of extinction in myriad ways. When AlphaGo (Google DeepMind's AI) played Go against world champion Lee Sedol, it made a move (Move 37) that no human had ever thought of. AlphaGo's calculations indicated that the move had a mere 1 in 10,000 chance of being played by a human. It wasn't programmed specifically to make that move. It thought several moves ahead and invented strategies no one taught it. Researchers called it 'beautiful' and 'creative' and playing against a 'thinking entity'. In a 2020 simulation, OpenAI trained simple AI agents to compete in hide-and-seek games. Without being programmed to, some agents invented tool-use like pushing objects to block doors or building forts. They did it by inventing complex strategies not taught by humans. They adapted and outsmarted their rivals on their own. In 2017, two AI chatbots, Bob and Alice, were designed to negotiate with each other. But very soon, they invented their own language, unintelligible to humans to make negotiations more efficient. Significantly, they abandoned English because it was inefficient for them. They began optimising communication without human permission or understanding. Researchers shut the programme down because they couldn't control or predict it anymore. Scientists at MIT and elsewhere are building neural networks that repair themselves when attacked or corrupted, without human instructions. Like living tissue healing itself, the network 'senses' failure and reorganises thereby suggesting rudimentary self-preservation instincts: a building block of 'will'.
This collective was seen in xenobots who built cooperative groups, and self-repaired wounds without an external brain or microchips. They acted as if they had goals. The scary and fascinating part? Emergence doesn't ask permission. It just happens. Because the xenobots were not meant to think. But they moved as though they had decided to. They acted as though they had purpose. And that suggested something that made researchers and philosophers alike slightly queasy: that perhaps intelligence simply emerges.

Aadhaar-based biometric and facial recognition attendance system launched for pourakarmikas in Hubballi-Dharwad
Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has launched a new Aadhaar-based biometric and facial recognition attendance system to boost the performance of pourakarmikas. The corporation introduced this system to enhance the efficiency of over 2,500 pourakarmikas and auto tipper drivers working across 82 wards, while improving the cleanliness standards of the city. The attendance system incorporates both biometric and facial recognition capabilities. Henceforth, the officials of HDMC will take attendance thrice a day. Pourakarmikas will give attendance in the morning while reporting to duty at 6am, and then again at 10am and 2pm. The govt of India's Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially sanctioned this advanced system. It ensures precise attendance tracking, timely wage disbursement, and enhanced administrative transparency. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali said the system offers several advantages, including accurate attendance monitoring, reduced tardiness, punctual payment of wages to civil servants, elimination of paper-based attendance records, and improved administration with a user-friendly interface featuring Kannada voice guidance. Geo-fencing enables location-based attendance verification. "The corporation aims to enhance civic worker recognition, improve city cleanliness, and strengthen administrative efficiency through this technological advancement," he added. The HDMC's IT department awarded the contract for implementing this biometric and facial recognition system to Swasthi Private Limited, a start-up founded by Vijay Bhajantri and Siddalinga Latti. According to sources, this initiative aligns with the digital governance reforms being implemented across urban local bodies. The system is expected to benefit both the corporation and the workers by establishing transparent work documentation. HDMC plans to gradually expand the system's capabilities to include real-time location tracking and work completion verification. The executive engineer of SWM, Santosh Kumar Yarangali, explained that the system effectively tracks working hours. The technology allows supervisors to efficiently oversee workforce allocation across zones, leading to enhanced accountability and operational efficiency. The new attendance system has been implemented in zones 10 and 11, with zone 12 scheduled for implementation shortly, encompassing a total of 27 wards. He further stated that the biometric and facial recognition attendance system would be extended to all wards within two months. Additionally, he confirmed that 90 attendance points have already been identified and geo-tagged.

Welcome in a forest village
Years ago, as part of a project, we embarked on a visit to a cluster of villages nestled deep within the forests. Our mandate was to gather information from the forest dwellers to assess their socio-economic status, their dependence on forest resources, and the condition of the forest. Leading a young team of scientists — most of whom had never visited a village, let alone ventured into dense thickets — was a challenge. While we were excited and curious about exploring unfamiliar places, many of us felt apprehensive about spending extended time there after work hours. Our main concerns included staying in dimly lit huts for over two weeks, attending to nature's call in the open, uncertain phone connectivity, and fear of mosquitoes and reptiles. Food, however, was not a concern, as a cook and an assistant accompanied us. To boost morale, I told my team during a pep talk that we might be reluctant to leave once our assignments were complete. We set off on a foggy morning and arrived at a village known for its prominent temple, where people regularly gathered from the surrounding areas. This village was ideal for our stay and data collection due to its proximity to other hamlets. The temple congregation also provided an excellent opportunity to meet villagers from neighbouring areas. Thanks to the arrangements made by our institute, we settled in comfortably. The village elders, accompanied by women and young girls, welcomed us with great pomp and gaiety — much to the delight and slight embarrassment of our demure young women scientists. The villagers' simple yet elegant demeanour was both impressive and endearing. Their heartfelt hospitality quickly helped us integrate into the community. The villagers, warm and accommodating, eagerly shared their customs and practices. The ease with which every team member, especially the women, mingled with them was a testament to the charm of the people and the place. Our cook and assistant found little to do, as households insisted we join them for meals. We felt fortunate to enjoy such delectable meals, lovingly prepared from. The affection poured into every platter made the food taste even better. Feeling at home, we often turned our lunch sessions into informal interviews, using questionnaires to gather information. The villagers' enthusiastic and sincere participation made our work smooth, allowing us to complete our assignments ahead of schedule. The team, initially eager to leave, now urged me to request an extension to stay longer for data analysis and report writing. They believed it would be more productive to work amidst the village environment rather than in the institute's four-walled laboratories. When permission was granted without hesitation, both guests and hosts were equally pleased. It was presumptuous of us to assume superiority over the forest dwellers — perhaps because we spoke English, wore branded clothes, and carried academic titles. The ever-smiling, innocent faces, the strong bonds that united them as one family, and their harmonious relationship with Mother Nature made us realise that the tribal way of life is far superior to ours. At the end of the day, we felt we had much to learn from their simple yet profound way of living.
