TNPL Drama! R Ashwin Argues With Umpire, Slams Bat After Sai Kishore Gets Him Out

Serious drama unfolded in the TNPL as R Ashwin was angry at the umpire for giving him out LBW off R Sai Kishore's bowling when the ball had clearly pitched outside the leg-stump.
Dindigul Dragons captain and India legend Ravichandran Ashwin lost his cool after getting out to his opposite number, IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans' R Sai Kishore in the fifth match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025 on Sunday (June 8) at the SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore.
The drama happened in the fifth over of the first innings. Sai Kishore pitched a loopy ball on a good length on the leg-stump and Ashwin went down to sweep it but missed as the ball from the left-arm spinner turned sharply. The bowler appealed and the umpire raised his finger, much to the dismay of Ashwin.
The batter immediately went to argue with the umpire, who turned his back to him. Angered, he slammed his bat on his pads before walking off. Watch the video here:

Ashwin's anger was perhaps justified because one look at the replay is enough to suggest that the ball pitched well outside the leg-stump, which is what the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star seemed to indicate. Luck just hasn't been on Ashwin's side since he announced his retirement from all formats late last year, with his IPL numbers also falling drastically in the recent season: seven wickets in nine matches at 40.42.
The younger and in-prime-form Sai Kishore, on the contrary, has come off an excellent year with the Gujarat Titans, picking 19 wickets in 15 innings at 20.68. He was unlucky not to be selected for the ongoing Indian tour of England, even for the 'A' side, which is playing two unofficial Tests against England Lions.
Coming back to the match, the Tamizhans romped to a comfortable victory against the Dragons. The promising Shivam Singh top-scored with a 30 in the first inning,s but another wicket for Sai Kishore, four scalps for pacer Esakkimuthu A and three strikes for spinner M Mathivannan reduced them to 93/10.
In reply, after opener Amit Sathvik got out early, wicketkeeper Tushar Raheja scored a brisk 39-ball 65 to see off the chase in the 12th over with nine wickets to spare.

Tanvi Sharma has some exceptional variety from the back court and her aggressive intent has been stunning opponents' at the Super 300 US Open in Council Bluffs, Iowa this whole week. The 16-year-old shuttler announced an imminent breakthrough season by reaching the finals by beating Ukrainian Polina Burhova 21-14, 21-16 late on Saturday night. In beating the 21-year-old, Sharma from Hoshiarpur in Punjab and training at the Guwahati National Centre in just over 34 minutes in a show of blistering badminton. Burhova is World No 40, but Sharma, ranked 66, has beaten World Nos 23, 58 and 50 respectively in making the finals. The arena in mid west America was near-empty and fellow semifinalist Ayush Shetty sat in the coaching chair for Sharma. But she was in such impervious form that the Indian barely needed any guidance as she unfurled her wide variety of strokes in beating the older opponent who was often left staggered and pinned down by Sharma's raging strokes. A high serve that she uses to buy some time before she comes charging at the net did the trick till she was faulted on one midway through the second set. She would briefly settle for the short serve, but regain her composure to go back to the tall serve. But Sharma's winning game is her variety from the back. She strokes the shuttle nice and high and early and has the capability to open up the court with ease solely because of the options at her disposal. The punch in her shots carries them cross or down the line with a special fizz and besides the body smashes on Burhova, she has a solid straight zipping hit that travels with speed. Not only is Sharma adept at hitting the lines with precision, she also plays from the wide flanks and conjures angles that scatter opponent defenses. Her drop shots are extremely cerebral, and she uses the deep smashes to the back to set up the curling drop that falls very close to the net. It's how she's beaten world no 23 in Round 1, and how she's made her first big final. Her frame beliefs the strength she can summon in her shots though Burhova would've felt the ping as Sharma went for the body smashes pretty often. But most often there were the follow-ups where she charged the net, didn't bother with dribbles and killed at will. The second set got a little close when Burhova took 5 points straight to level at 16, but Sharma responded by taking 5 of her own thereafter, never letting up on the intensity. Her game is compared to Sindhu's for the attack she can unleash, though her net will get tested by the Top Tenners. But she easily and non-chalantly matches the firepower of opponents and is managing to generate far more power than her frame lets on by sheer timing of striking the shuttle. Winning in straight sets also showed she can dictate the pace and assert her stomping rhythm on the match never quite allowing opponents to snatch her leads. Sharma plays the winner of Beiwen Zhang and Line Christophersen.

England T20I: Smriti's majestic ton powers India to big win

She led from the front in some style after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested as a precaution after suffering a head injury during a warm-up match against an ECB eleven. She was on the balcony cheering as Mandhana stroked a boundary to reach a 51-ball century. The left-handed opener took charge and made full-use of a good pitch to hit a 62-ball 112, (16x4, 3x6). It took India to a huge 210/5 and the hosts never recovered from early setbacks to be dismissed for 113 in 14.5 overs. The Indian innings also saw valuable contributions from No. 3 Harleen Deol (43 off 23) after Shafali Verma (20 - 22 b), on a comeback, raised 77 runs for the first wicket with Mandhana. Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana smoked her first century in the shortest format and left-arm spinner N Shree Charani grabbed a four-fer on debut as India defeated England by 97 runs, their heaviest defeat, in the first T20I to start the series with a massive win here on Saturday. Mandhana became the first Indian woman batter to score a hundred in all three formats of the game as she hammered 112, the highest individual score in Women's T20I for India, surpassing regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur's 103 as India posted a massive 210/5 in 20 overs. In reply, England were bundled out for 113 in 14.5 overs with Shree Charani claiming 4-12 in 3.5 overs. Spinner Deepti Sharma (2-32) and Radha Yadav (2-15) turned out to be able foil for her as India started the series with one of their best wins against England. Asked to bat first by the England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, India made a superb start with Smriti and her opening partner Shafali Verma raising 77 runs for the first wicket partnership. Shafali was sent back by Em Arlott for 20 runs, but Mandhana went from strength to strength to score a century and helped the team to a big total. Deepti Sharma struck her first ball of the match when she had Danni Wyatt-Hodge caught by Harleen at short third as she attempted to work it leg-side. England slumped to 9/2. Though Nat Sciver-Brunt and Tammy Beaumont tried to revive the innings with a 49-run partnership, the latter's dismissal by Deepti for 10, followed by the early departure of Amy Jones (1) and Alice Capsey (5), Em Arlott (12) and Sophie Ecclestone (1) meant England slumped to 102/7. Their skipper, Nat Sciver-Brunt, continued to wage a lone battle, reaching her fifty off 31 balls before she was out for 66 off 42 balls (4x10) as England folded up soon for 113, which incidentally was just one run more than what Smriti Mandhana scored. Shree Charani got the key wickets of Capsey, Ecclestone, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Lauren Bell to destroy England's middle and lower-order batting. With this win, India have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series, followed by three ODIs.
