Why Aussie cricket legend should regret using a one-word insult to attack rival star - even though it used to be a compliment down under
Aussie cricket legend Ian Healy is eating his words following his astonishing attack on West Indies paceman Shamar Joseph ahead of the first Test where he declared the quick 'isn't Curtly Ambrose' - then called him 'champ'.
Speaking on SEN Radio, a fired-up Healy responded to Joseph warning Aussie Sam Konstas to 'look out' in Barbados.
'OK Shamar, well you've delivered crap all year,' Healy said on Tuesday.
'So he better improve, that's what I'm saying.
'You're not Curtly Ambrose, champ.'
Joseph left Healy red-faced after snaring four wickets in the first innings, including the scalps of Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green and all-rounder Beau Webster - then backing that up by clean-bowling Konstas in his second stint at the crease.
The Guyanese star earlier described Aussie young gun Konstas as a 'stylish player'.
As many Aussies will attest to, being labelled 'champ' is an insult these days - although it used to be a compliment.
In a recent TikTok video, a staff member from the Manly NRL team playfully labelled a number of footy stars 'champ' at the end of a conversation to gauge their reaction.
'What do you mean?,' forward Jazz Tevaga demanded.
'Why are you calling me 'champ' for?'
Others, including Ben Trbojevic, Tommy Talau and Lachlan Croker, also got their backs up after hearing the word.
NRL players aren't the only ones objecting to its use, with American-born AFL star Mason Cox also noticing it in his line of work.
'You want to know the one word in the Australian language that will upset anyone?' he asked in TikTok video.
'The word starts with a C - you might think I've used it before, but the word is "champ".'
Healy's attack came after Joseph said he admired the teenager's fearlessness at the crease during his Test debut last December at the MCG against India.
Asked if he thought Konstas would produce his trademark ramp shots in the Caribbean, Joseph responded with: 'Well, that's up to him. I will do my part.'
Joseph, 25, announced himself to the cricket world in stunning fashion last January.
In just his second Test, Joseph finished with six wickets in an incredible 10-over spell as Australia failed to chase down 216 in Brisbane.
He finished with figures of 7-68 as the visitors won by eight runs at the Gabba, in what was their first victory on Australian soil in 27 years.

Farrell pleased with Lions grit after early Force onslaught in Perth
PERTH, June 28 (Reuters) - Coach Andy Farrell was pleased with how the British & Irish Lions stayed in the contest early on against the Western Force on Saturday before running away with a 54-7 victory to kick off their tour of Australia. Lions management had questioned whether the tour matches against Super Rugby teams would be competitive enough to prepare the Lions properly for the test series with so many Wallabies in camp and unavailable to play. The Force, the weakest of Australia's four Super Rugby teams, made a mockery of those fears in the opening quarter of Saturday's match when they held the tourists at 7-7 and had a string of penalties inside the Lions 22-metre line. "The Force played the ball from everywhere and kept the ball in play, that's exactly what we wanted and they tested us fully," Farrell said. "I was happy with how we stayed in the fight because it was a tough old start to the game. At 7-7, everything was locked wasn't it really? So I thought we stayed in the game really well. "We reassessed at halftime and then hit them on the break which was pretty pleasing, and after that I thought our defence was pretty strong." The Lions were beaten 28-24 by Argentina in their first outing in Dublin last week and Farrell said there was still plenty to work on despite the lopsided scoreline in Perth. "There's fantastic learnings for us again," he added. "We had a few things to fix, mainly our discipline, but once we gained a little bit of composure, I thought the second half was a little bit better. "Some nice stuff but obviously, at this stage in the tour, a lot still to do." The Lions play the Queensland Reds, New South Wales Waratahs, ACT Brumbies and an invitational Australia-New Zealand XV over the next three weeks before the first test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on July 19.

MAFS stars Awhina Rutene and Billy Belcher reveal surprising new collaboration amid romance speculation: 'Gonna be spicy!'
Married At First Sight stars Awhina Rutene and Billy Belcher have revealed a surprising collaboration. Just under three months after their stint on the Channel Nine reality juggernaut, the pair are making a return to the small screen. This time around though, they'll be helping Perth-based singletons find love in a new YouTube dating series called 1Rose. Announcing the upcoming series on Instagram with a casting call this week, organisers revealed that the series was an extension of their intimate, speed-dating events. 'If you've been to our events, you know the experience,' the announcement post read. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'But for the show, we're switching things up with a fresh new setting, exciting new elements, and unexpected twists.' The post went on to explain that each show would feature 16 singles looking for a potential love match. 'At the end of the night, you'll have your 1ROSE to give to someone who sparked your interest,' the post concluded. Commenting on the announcement, Billy, 32, wrote: 'Gonna be spicy, this!' while Awhina, 30, simply offered three love heart emojis. Neither MAFS star will be in the running, however, with Billy taking on the role of host while Awhina handles the commentary duties. Speaking to Perth Now about the new venture, Awhina said the fast-paced events would take a lot of the 'grunt work' out of awkward social situations. 'It's not like when you go to a bar or nightclub and you're trying to gauge whether someone's in a relationship or not, and whether they're just out for fun,' she said. 'And then there's also those questions that you don't necessarily ask when you're out at a bar. So I guess it takes a lot of the grunt work out of it.' The publication also reported that the events would feature many twists and turns, including cash prizes, surprise rounds, and hidden matches for each participant, based on pre-selected criteria. Awhina added that her MAFS co-star could not wait to take on hosting duties, likening him to a 'golden retriever at the moment.' 'I know it's a dating event, and the singles are there to get to know each other, but Billy likes to be the main character,' she said. The announcement comes amid speculation that Awhina and Billy are more than friends. Most recently, the pair sent the rumour mill into overdrive after enjoying a cosy date night in Perth earlier this month. Awhina shared a series of loved-up snaps on Instagram with Billy during an outing to The Garden in Perth – further igniting speculation that their friendship has turned romantic. In one mirror selfie taken in an elevator, Awhina looked sensational in a figure-hugging black mini dress with long sleeves, her sleek brunette hair cascading past her shoulders. Beside her, Billy cut a rugged figure in a sleeveless black top that showed off his tattooed arms, as he embraced Awhina from behind and beamed at the camera. 'It's not like when you go to a bar or nightclub and you're trying to gauge whether someone's in a relationship or not, and whether they're just out for fun,' Awhina told Perth Now Another photo showed the MAFS beauty sipping a glass of red wine at the trendy bar, while a cheeky Billy hid behind a drinks menu. Fans of the reality show erupted with excitement in the comments, thrilled that the pair many felt should have been matched on the show might have finally found love with each other. Many viewers have long suspected Awhina and Billy's chemistry, noting that the MAFS experts got it wrong by not pairing them in the first place. This flurry of fan enthusiasm comes after months of speculation about the duo's relationship. Both Awhina and Billy are based in Western Australia, and they struck up a close bond during the marriage experiment. Their respective on-screen marriages famously imploded when it was revealed that Awhina's TV husband, Adrian Araouzou, and Billy's wife, Sierah Swepstone, had been secretly meeting up behind their backs during filming. The betrayal left Awhina and Billy heartbroken, and the pair chose to leave the experiment separately amid the drama.
