Boston Terriers compete for top spot ahead of derby weekend
It's a five-day competition of who can put their best paw forward. The Boston Terrier Club of America welcomes over 200 dogs to Owensboro for the first time.

''…Oregon. I know several people from California. I believe we have entries from overseas,' says Dominic Koon, the President of the Boston Terrier Club of America.
This year's competition is called 'Run for the Rosettes' … A tribute to the host state's derby week. Competition judges analyze each canine what they define as the standard.
'Does the Boston Terrier have a square head? Does it have smaller ears? Does it have a level top? Is it square?,' says Koon.
Officials say pedigree matters, but a dog's good condition could make room for a higher score. It features everything from obedience to agility trials. For those under 18-years-old, there's a junior competition.
'They're learning how to care for a dog. They actually get graded differently in the round. They're graded on how they handle the dog,' says Koon.
Darlus Gerson has over 25 years of experience competing and says the junior competition is what kicked it all off for her family. It was a way to bond with her youngest daughter , who was 12 at the time.
'Our other two daughters that were older were in the malls. We decided to do something that the family could participate in together. It keeps you outside in the park with your dogs and your family. [Boston Terriers] excel at being your best friends,' says Gerson, a competitor from California.
She and her husband traveled from the west coast for a chance at a first place ribbon in the bred-by-exhibitor competition
'We started on Friday night, and it took us about 24 hours worth of plane flights and everything,' says Gerson.
Officials say competition will close with the Boston of the Year competition. It's only open to those who have scored in the top 20 throughout the year. Each competitor gets 3 minutes to showcase their dog with a song of their choice and develop memories for a lifetime.

Gerson was playing midfield for Flamengo in soccer-mad Brazil. From Rio de Janeiro, the side's home, he had the sun, a treasured spot in the famous Seleção, and credit in the bank after a strong display at the Club World Cup, where he scored a belting goal against Bayern Munich and helped the Rio de Janeiro team record a famous victory over eventual champion Chelsea. By mid-July and the end of the tournament, the 28-year-old had switched allegiances to Zenit St. Petersburg, a team more than 11,000 kilometers away in icy Russia, a country locked in an ongoing war with Ukraine. In rather comical fashion, Zenit—one of the land's strongest clubs—announced the signing with Gerson 'bursting through a giant joker card placed within the stand', as the official website put it. A few cheerleaders and flying sparks accompanied him. It has to be one of the bizarre transfers this window. In response to Russia's role in the conflict, Russian Premier League teams are exempt from competing in UEFA competitions. Further, the national team is unable to qualify for and participate in the European Championships and the World Cup. Gerson, who's also represented Fluminense, Roma, Fiorentina, and Marseille, is contracted to Zenit until 2030, having moved in a deal worth €25 million ($28.5 million). Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti will cast his eyes well into the distance to see how Gerson gets on. As the author Marc Bennetts explores in his excellent book Football Dynamo, released in 2008 but still eye-opening, the landscape of Russian soccer is a curious one and difficult to access from the outside. There's Zenit, backed by the nation's energy giant Gazprom; CSKA Moscow, whose history ties in with the military; and Dynamo Moscow, playing on grass directly above a shopping center. Meanwhile, Ukrainian powerhouse Shakhtar Donetsk has a history of bringing flamboyant Brazilians to Eastern Europe. Gerson's Russia Call Why Russia for Gerson? Increased wages can be a significant attraction when players move from one place to another, and sometimes the cultural discovery of being in a new locale is a pull. It's also worth remembering that soccer players often operate within an elite club bubble, looked after and surrounded by modern training facilities, allowing for detachment from the host country on the outside. 'I'm full of energy and can't wait to get out on the pitch and join my teammates as soon as possible. I hope that I'll quickly find a connection with my new teammates and we'll have a great season together,' said Gerson upon joining Zenit. While most European divisions are yet to start, the Russian Premier League is already underway, as Zenit strives to wrestle back supremacy from last season's surprise champion Krasnodar. He is a coup for the Saint-Petersburg outfit. In March, Gerson signed a contract to keep him at Flamengo until 2030, his subsequent departure angering many Flamengo fans. For Zenit, his flair could prove a catalyst to achieving its targets.

Roma offer €25m for Wesley
Roma are reportedly getting closer to the signing of Wesley of Flamengo. The Giallorossi have in fact presented an offer of 25 million euros, including bonuses, to secure the services of the 2003-born winger, writes La Gazzetta dello Sport. Advertisement The player was also convinced by the direct pressure from Gian Piero Gasperini, Roma's new coach, who indicated the winger among his first transfer targets. Last summer, Wesley had already been close to joining Atalanta but the deal fell through. Now, a year later, the scenario has moved to the capital, with Roma ready to close the deal in the next few hours. The player has already given the green light for the transfer to take place. Wesley chose the Roman destination also thanks to the advice of a friend and former Giallorossi player, Gerson, who advised him to move to Serie A. However, the real decisive element was the central role that Gasperini intends to assign to him in the new Roma, a project that has thrilled the player.
