British mountaineer scales Mount Everest for record 19th time

CBS News18-05-2025
A British mountain guide has scaled Mount Everest Sunday for the 19th time, breaking his own record for the most ascents of the world's highest mountain by a non-Sherpa guide.
Kenton Cool, 51, from southwest England, scaled the 29,032-foot peak on Sunday along with several other climbers. He was doing well and on his way down from the summit, said Iswari Paudel of Himalayan Guides Nepal, which equipped his expedition.
Cool first climbed Mount Everest in 2004 and has been doing it almost every year since then.

He was unable to climb Everest in 2014 because the season was canceled after 16 Sherpa guides were killed in an avalanche, and again in 2015 when an earthquake triggered an avalanche that killed 19 people. The 2020 climbing season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Hundreds of climbers and their guides are on the mountain during the popular spring climbing season, hoping to scale the world's highest peak.
Many of them have already succeeded while more are expected to make their attempt before the climbing season closes at the end of this month, when weather condition deteriorates with the coming of the rainy monsoon season, making climbing difficult.
Only Nepali Sherpa guides have scaled the peak more times than Cool.
The highest number of climbs of Mount Everest is 30 times by Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita, who is also on the mountain currently and is expected to make the climb in the next few days.

Care home resident's dream comes true with steam train journey

A steam train ride through the countryside has made a lifelong dream come true for a care home resident. The trip was organised by staff at The Manor House Knaresborough, who are helping residents tick off their bucket list wishes. David, a resident at the Anchor care home who lives with limited mobility, always wanted to travel by steam train but never thought it would happen. He said: "I couldn't quite believe it was actually happening. "I'd always wanted to ride a steam train but thought it would never be possible. "The team here made the impossible possible, and that journey through the Yorkshire Dales was everything I'd dreamed it would be and more." The journey, which saw other Manor House residents take the trip too, took place earlier this month on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Clive, another Manor House resident and passenger on the trip, once worked for British Railways and spent the day sharing stories from his time on the railways. Joy, who recently moved to Yorkshire, enjoyed a scenic tour of the Dales on the return journey, thanks to the driver, Steve, who pointed out landmarks along the way. A special moment was arranged for resident Susan, who was surprised by her family waiting for her on the platform (they went on to join her on the journey). The care home team also organised another treat for 101-year-old Susan, who is originally from Ireland and dreamed of returning to her hometown. Instead, the team brought Ireland to her by transforming The Manor House into a celebration of Irish culture, complete with professional dancers performing traditional Irish routines, and a birthday cake. Kids' summer reading challenge set to launch in York today

A summer reading challenge is set to launch in York today. The Story Garden Summer Reading Challenge launches at Explore Libraries today (Saturday, July 12), encouraging children to read or share six books over the summer holidays. Lyndsay Glover, who organises the challenge for Explore each year, said: "Reading has life-changing benefits. "Studies show that children who are read to or read regularly are more likely to thrive – not just at school, but in their social and emotional development, too. "They gain stronger language and communication skills, better emotional wellbeing, and greater confidence. "Reading also reduces stress, and sparks imagination. "And it's not just the little ones who benefit – curling up with a good book gives adults a valuable chance to slow down, relax, and take a break from the busy world. "Around 3,000 children in York signed up for the challenge last year and they borrowed more than 65,000 books during the summer. "Can you help us beat that in 2025?" Children who complete the challenge by Saturday, September 13 will receive a medal and certificate. They can also collect stickers along the way to help keep them motivated. Explore Libraries is running a programme of free or low-cost family events throughout the summer. These include craft sessions, theatre performances, storytelling, and workshops designed to suit all ages. A York parent praised the scheme, saying: "I just wanted to express what a fabulous time we've had over the summer holidays across all Explore libraries. "We booked onto all sorts of different sessions as part of the summer reading challenge and have loved every one of them. "Thank you for being a big part of our summer holidays." A family new to the city added: "Thank you so much for the Summer Reading Challenge. "We're new to the area and it has given us so much stability. "My son was never interested in reading before." A young participant said: "Best day ever." To take part, families can sign up at any Explore library. All activities are bookable at To join a library in your area, call or sign up online at
