Ringgit strengthens further as weak US dollar, Fed speculation lift sentiment
At 8.01am, the local currency strengthened to 4.1955/2160 against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2060/2130.
The US Dollar Index (DXY) slipped further to 96.875 as investors awaited key economic data, with the 90-day pause period approaching its end.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the yields on two- and 10-year US Treasury notes declined by one and five basis points, respectively, as expectations grew that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) may ease monetary policy in the second half of the year.
'President Trump continues to assert on social media that interest rates should be lowered. This reinforces the view that the next Fed chair may adopt a more dovish stance,' he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, Brent crude slipped 0.24 per cent to US$67.61 (RM283) per barrel. Market attention is on the upcoming Opec+ meeting on Sunday, where member countries are expected to raise output quotas to reclaim market share.
At the open, the ringgit was mixed against major currencies but mostly higher versus its Asean peers.
It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.9190/9335 from 2.9156/9206, slipped versus the British pound to 5.7617/7898 from 5.7597/7693, and eased against the euro to 4.9457/9698 from 4.9290/9372.
The ringgit also depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.3009/3176 from 3.2986/3034, but gained on the Thai baht at 12.9331/13.0059 from 12.9356/9627, strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.3/259.7 from 259.0/259.5, and firmed against the Philippine peso to 7.44/7.49 from 7.46/7.48. — Bernama

Malaysia, Italy to finalise G2G defence procurement deal
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Italy have agreed to finalise a government-to-government (G2G) defence procurement agreement, in addition to exploring a new agreement for joint logistics services between the armed forces of both nations. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this followed his bilateral meeting with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto at the Defence Ministry in Rome. "Both countries renewed their commitment to further strengthening relations and taking existing defence cooperation to a higher level," Khaled said in a Facebook post. He also welcomed Italy's offer to share its expertise in underwater security, along with knowledge-sharing in telecommunications, satellite technology and cyberspace which are areas that would benefit both nations. Khaled's meeting with his Italian counterpart took place ahead of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official working visit to the Italian capital. Anwar is scheduled for a three-day working visit to Italy, where he hoped the visit would strengthen bilateral ties and deepen strategic cooperation, as well as to elevate Asean-European Union engagement in a challenging global landscape. Malaysia is currently awaiting its maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) built by Italian defence firm Leonardo S.p.A. where its construction is currently at 60 per cent progress. The acquisition of the ATR-72 MPA from Leonardo S.p.A was formalised during the 16th Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) in May 2023. It was part of a broader strategy under the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Capability Development Plan 2055, which envisions the procurement of six MPAs by 2035 in three phases.

Dollar wallows near 3.5-year low as Fed cuts, Trump bill in focus
The greenback hovered near its weakest since 2021 against the euro and hit a 2015 low versus the Swiss franc. (Freepik pic) TOKYO : The US dollar hunkered near the lowest since February 2022 against major peers on Wednesday, as traders considered dovish hints from Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, along with the potential impact of President Donald Trump's spending bill. The greenback was pinned near its weakest since September 2021 on the euro, and was at its lowest since January 2015 versus the Swiss franc. Powell reiterated on Tuesday at the European Central Bank's annual conference in Sintra, Portugal that the Fed is taking a patient approach to further interest rate cuts, but didn't rule out a reduction at this month's meeting, saying everything depends on incoming data. That raises the stakes for the monthly non-farm payrolls report on Thursday. Indications of labour market resilience in the US JOLTS figures overnight saw the dollar rise off Tuesday's lows. The dollar index, which measures the currency against six major counterparts, edged up slightly to 96.677, but didn't stray far from the overnight low of 96.373. Markets are also keeping a close watch on Trump's massive tax-and-spending bill, which could add US$3.3 trillion to the national debt. The bill, which was passed by the US senate, will return to the house for final approval. 'The confirmation that this is an increase in issuance, an increase in government spending well beyond its means, is not necessarily good news for the Treasury market, and it's arguably one of the reasons the dollar's going down,' said Rodrigo Catril, a strategist at National Australia Bank. Also weighing on the US currency has been Trump's continued attacks on Powell, putting Fed independence in the spotlight. On Monday, the President sent the Fed chair a list of global central bank key rates adorned with handwritten commentary saying the US. rate should be between Japan's 0.5% and Denmark's 1.75%, and telling him he was 'as usual, 'too late.'' The greenback held steady at 0.7906 Swiss franc, after dipping as low as 0.7873 franc in the previous session. The euro was flat at US$1.1802, sticking close to the overnight peak of US$1.1829. Sterling edged up slightly to US$1.37435, approaching Tuesday's high of US$1.3787, a level last seen in October 2021. The dollar made up a little ground against the yen, adding 0.1% to 143.59 yen, following the prior session's 0.4% slide.
