Uddhav Thackeray questions Shiv Sena MLA slapgate: ‘Attempt to malign Maharashtra CM Fadnavis?'

Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday took a veiled jibe at the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena after an MLA from the party slapped a canteen staff in Mumbai. "He should be cautious,' Thackeray said after a Sena MLA slapped a canteen worker.(Raju Shinde/ Hindustan Times)
'Is this an attempt to malign the chief minister? He should be cautious,' Uddhav Thackeray told reporters after the incident came to light.
The incident involved Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad slapping a staff member of a hostel canteen for MLAs for allegedly serving stale food.
A video which has gone viral shows Gaikwad repeatedly slapping the staff member at the billing counter of the Akashvani MLA hostel and refusing to pay the bill.
Following the incident, Gaikwad has remained defiant about his behaviour, saying he has no regrets. He said that this was his 'natural reaction," adding, 'If someone does not understand Hindi, or Marathi, or English, then this is how we do it."
Recounting the incident, he said that he had ordered 'dal, roti and rice' on Tuesday night. 'I mixed the dal and rice but the very first morsel tasted odd. I took another and that made me vomit,' he said.
He further claimed that he can 'tell within a minute just by smelling it' if the food served is stale.
Gaikwad then went to the canteen and confronted the manager, who he said 'could not explain himself'. Following this, the Sena MLA punched and slapped the staff member, also shoving others there.
Such conduct sends the wrong message: CM Fadnavis
Reacting to the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that such behaviour does not send the right message.
'Such conduct does not behove anyone. It impacts the image of the state legislature, and as an MLA,' Fadnavis said.
"A wrong message goes among people about all MLAs that there is misuse of power," he further added.
Fadnavis also appealed to the Maharashtra Legislative Council chairman Ram Shinde to look into the matter of the MLAs' accomodation and initiate action if necessary.
'But assault by public representatives does not send out a right message. This is serious issue,' the CM said
Fadnavis also urged Eknath Shinde and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar to take cognisance of the slapping incident and 'take further action accordingly'.

Family of 3 gets life for killing journo, bro over garbage tiff

Meerut: A district and sessions court in Saharanpur has sentenced a 55-year-old man, his wife and their son to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of a photojournalist and his younger brother following a dispute over garbage and cow dung disposal. Additional district govt counsel (ADGC) Amit Tyagi said, "Photojournalist Ashish Kumar (23), who worked with a prominent Hindi daily, and his brother Ashutosh Kumar (19) were shot dead by Mahipal Saini, his wife Vimlesh Saini (50) and their son Suraj Saini (28) in August 2019. The violence stemmed from a neighbourhood dispute. The confrontation turned violent when the Saini family forcibly entered the brothers' home in Madhavnagar locality, armed with country-made pistols. Ashish was shot at close range and died on the spot, while Ashutosh succumbed to his injuries at the hospital." Both brothers were primary earners for the family. Ashish left behind a pregnant wife and his mother, who filed the police complaint that led to the arrests. An FIR was lodged naming six members of the Saini family: three adults and three juveniles. All accused had been out on bail. Following their conviction on Friday, the three adults were taken into custody. The court of additional district judge Alok Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each. "The fourth accused, Jagdeep Saini -- Mahipal's father, in his 70s -- was sentenced to six months in jail for giving his licensed firearm to his son 'for self-defence'. He was fined Rs 6,000. Trial proceedings for the three juveniles are ongoing before the Juvenile Justice Board," the ADGC said. The killings sparked widespread public outrage, prompting local protests and heightening tensions as some individuals attempted to attack the accused family's home. Additional forces, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), were deployed to maintain law and order. The incident also drew sharp political reactions. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation for the victims' family, while Congress leader Ajay Kumar called for chief minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation. Yogi later announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for the victims' family.

Maharashtra parties welcome Unesco tag for 12 Shivaji forts

Mumbai: Political parties across the spectrum expressed their happyness, following the inclusion of 12 forts constructed by Maratha King in the Unesco World Heritage List. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CM Eknath Shinde extended their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for facilitating the achievement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BJP planned to commemorate the occasion with Shiv Aarti events throughout Mumbai during the weekend, including at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park. Meanwhile, MNS chief Raj Thackeray called on the govt to immediately demolish all unauthorized constructions on 11 of the forts, irrespective of the encroachers' religion or caste. The Congress thanked Unesco while critiquing the Prime Minister. Chief minister Fadnavis stated that he, along with his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, met Prime Minister Modi to request his support in securing the Unesco designation for the forts, thereby elevating them on the world tourism map as a proud manifestation of Marathi heritage. Shinde commented, "It is a big achievement for us and a pride for Maharashtra. I thank PM Modi and the chief minister who took the initiative to make it successful. " Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar remarked, "This is not merely a historical honour, but a mark of glory that underscores the global significance of the forts that stand as witnesses to our Swarajya. Now, Chhatrapati's history will not remain confined to our textbooks but will become a subject of global study…. Heartfelt thanks to the Government of India, the Archaeological Department, and history scholars for this historic achievement!" Congress's Maharashtra president Harshwardhan Sapkal stated, "Unesco's recognition of the glorious history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a matter of pride and honour for the entire nation. But unfortunately, it is a tragedy for this country that Modi feels ashamed even to mention the name of our Maharaj, whose glory is celebrated worldwide! UNESCO took timely action, which is good; otherwise, the Modi govt would have handed over these historical forts to Adani as well. " Raj Thackeray urged the govt to demolish unauthorised constructions on the eleven forts, as he tweeted in Marathi and English: "…Out of these twelve forts, eleven are in Maharashtra and one fort, the fort of Jinji, is in Tamil Nadu. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On this occasion, those who talk about Maharashtra's achievements will know how far the idea of Swarajya instilled by Maharaj had reached and will also know how old and strong the bridge between two languages and cultures is. " Responding to Raj Thackeray, BJP minister Ashish Shelar stated on Twitter, "We have issued a govt resolution to form a committee under the chairmanship of District Collectors to remove encroachments. A survey of encroachments on all forts has been completed by January 31, 2025, and some have been removed, while action is ongoing for others."
