Oilers come away empty-handed from Day One of cringe-worthy NHL draft

Yahoo8 hours ago

Remember when this used to be the biggest day of the hockey year in Edmonton?
Draft day used to stop traffic in this city. It was when the eyes of the hockey world turned to Edmonton and all of the Oilers hard work over the past season finally paid off.
There would be watch parties in bars and draft parties in homes as fans of the rebuilding Oilers waited to see which young superstar was going to lead their team out of the darkness and into the sun.
First overall in 2010. First overall in 2011. First overall in 2012. First overall in 2015.
Darnell Nurse seventh overall in 2013. Leon Draisaitl third overall in 2014. Jesse Puljujarvi fourth overall in 2016. Evan Bouchard 10th overall in 2018.
The last weekend in June was Edmonton's time to shine.
Now, fans in Edmonton barely know the draft is even happening, mostly because the Oilers had nothing to do with the first day.
Edmonton had to sit out the first round Friday night and, barring a trade, won't pick in Saturday's second round, either.
This is the other side of going all in to chase a Stanley Cup.
They didn't have a first rounder in 2023 and don't have a first-round pick next year.
Edmonton's first pick this year doesn't come until 83rd overall in the third round on Saturday — their compensation for deciding that Dylan Holloway wasn't worth $2.29 million and refusing to match the St. Louis Blues offer sheet.
Ouch.
Not being a part of the first day was good in one respect — the NHL once again turned a live event into an awkward marathon of cringe — but getting a new prospect would have been nice.
Where did the high picks go?
Edmonton didn't have a 2024 first-round pick (they spent it on the Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick deal), so they traded this year's first round pick for Philadelphia's 2024 first round pick and took Sam O'Reilly at 32nd overall.
They traded this year's second round pick to Arizona back in 2022 in the Zack Kassian salary dump. The Oilers sent Kassian, their 2022 first round pick, 2024 third round pick and 2025 second round pick to the Coyotes for Arizona's 2022 first round pick. The Oilers took Reid Schaefer 32nd overall and would later send him to Nashville in the Mattias Ekholm exchange.
Edmonton's other second-round pick, the one they received for not matching Philip Broberg's offer sheet, went to Boston in the Trent Frederic trade.
Edmonton's first round pick next year went to San Jose for Jake Walman.
The lack of high picks is going to catch up with them down the road, right around the time that Connor McDavid might be up for a new contract and deciding if Edmonton's Stanley Cup window is still open, but GM Stan Bowman is counting on college and European free agents to help fill the void.

Sam Bennett says he's staying in Florida with hopes Panthers turn into a dynasty

Sam Bennett could have gone to free agency and picked his landing spot, plus probably could have signed for much more money than the Florida Panthers were able to offer. Instead, he chose winning. Bennett, the reigning Conn Smythe Award winner as playoff MVP of Florida's most recent run to the Stanley Cup, spoke out Saturday about his decision to sign an eight-year, $64 million deal with the Panthers. His reasoning was actually quite simple. "I think we have a lot more success in our future," Bennett said. It's not hard to envision that, given how the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions now have eight core players — Bennett, Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Gustav Forsling, Anton Lundell and Seth Jones — under contract through at least 2030. Bennett's status, especially after winning the Conn Smythe following a 15-goal performance in the playoffs, might have seemed to be in some question a couple weeks ago. He announced at a Miami nightclub last week that he was staying — there was no deal at the time, and his agent wasn't happy that he did that — but it was clear that Bennett was hoping something would get done in Florida. Teammates were evidently thrilled when the news broke Friday night. "I got like three FaceTimes right away from the boys," Bennett said. "A couple of them were together and they were so fired up. The group chat was going nuts. I've said it a million times, this group is so tight. So many guys that really care about each other. I was definitely feeling the love last night." Bennett is critical to the Panthers at both ends. He was one of three players in the NHL this season — Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk's brother, and Washington's Tom Wilson were the other two — with at least 50 points and 90 penalty minutes. He said his decision came down to not seeing a need to take risks. He loves playing in Florida, loves being part of the Panthers, loves who he goes to work with every day. More money or a new role wasn't going to outweigh all of that. "I think we really have the chance to truly make this team a dynasty," Bennett said. "I'm really just grateful that I get the chance to be a part of it. There are so many pieces in this puzzle that create this team and the success that this team has. And just to be a small piece of that is an honor. Looking forward to growing this legacy for the next eight years, for sure."

Maple Leafs, Golden Knights discussing trade for Mitch Marner's rights: Sources

The Vegas Golden Knights are discussing a trade to acquire the rights of pending unrestricted free agent Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to league sources, which would allow them to sign the All-Star winger before he hits the open market on Tuesday. If they acquire Marner, the Golden Knights would gain the ability to sign Marner to a maximum-length eight-year contract. If they wait until Tuesday, when free agency opens, the longest term they could give him will be seven years. Advertisement TSN's Darren Dreger was the first to report the potential move. Marner is one of Toronto's most accomplished players, sitting fifth on the all-time scoring list with 741 points at age 28. He was drafted No. 4 by his hometown team in 2015 and became an immediate fan favorite because of his creativity and elite playmaking ability. However, Marner also drew sharp criticism for the team's inability to get over the hump in the playoffs and started to chafe under that scrutiny. It became clear he could be eyeing a departure in free agency when he refused to engage in discussions on a contract extension with the Leafs throughout last season. He also refused to waive his no-movement clause at the March 7 trade deadline for a deal that would have sent him to the Carolina Hurricanes. Earlier this week, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving acknowledged to reporters that Marner was going to test the free-agent market. A trade to Vegas would be similar to the one the Hurricanes made at last year's draft, when they sent Jake Guentzel's rights to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a third-round pick after failing to get him to sign a contract. That allowed Guentzel to ink an eight-year deal with the Lightning, carrying a $9 million AAV.

Justin Bieber Shares Photos of Son Jack Sporting a Toronto Maple Leafs Jersey on a Family Vacation — and the Team Reacts

Justin Bieber's son Jack Blues wore a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey in several recent Instagram posts from the singer The Canadian musician is a longtime fan of the NHL team, who commented on one of the posts The photos of Jack, 10 months, come amid Justin's lakeside family vacation with his son and wife, Hailey BieberJustin Bieber's mini-me may not be able to walk yet, but he's already following in his dad's hockey-loving footsteps! After debuting a new Instagram username, the 'Love Yourself' singer, 31, shared a dozen posts on Friday, June 27, including several from his lakeside family vacation with wife Hailey Bieber and son Jack Blues. In some of the snaps, the musician revealed that the couple's 10-month-old already has a sporty side. In several different posts, the Canadian musician, who now goes by @lilbieber on Instagram, showed off Jack wearing a jersey for the Toronto Maple Leafs — his longtime team — from a series of different angles. Specifically, the little one repped Auston Matthews — a center and captain for the NHL team — with the baby-size jersey, which he paired with some baggy jeans and matching blue socks. Matthews acknowledged the support, commenting '💙,' on one of the singer's posts. The Maple Leafs also recognized the shout-out, writing, '💙💙💙,' in the comments of another carousel of photos of Jack. Another snap of the 10-month-old revealed that hockey is not the only sport the proud parents have introduced to Jack. In the photo, the little one sits next to a soccer ball in a field, wearing a blue and gray hoodie and looking away from the camera. Justin adorned the picture with a fairy emoji and captioned it, '🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️.' This is almost identical to Justin's captions for the other posts, and appears to be a nod to his viral moment telling paparazzi that he is "standing on business." He used the person standing emojis alongside every recent post he shared of Jack, which also included snaps of him smiling down at his son, who sat in a delivery box. Justin also shared a solo shot of Hailey, 28, and a photo of their son next to what appeared to be the Rhode founder's hands. In line with Hailey and Justin's ongoing decision to keep Jack's face off of social media, the father of one cropped all of the pictures of the jersey-wearing baby — or shared a snap of the back of his head — so his face was not visible. Justin and Hailey got married in September 2018. Six years later, in May 2024, they renewed their wedding vows in Hawaii and revealed that they were expecting their first child together.
