Trump's ‘big, beautiful' tax bill passes US House vote, Speaker Johnson reveals key features of the Act

House Republicans lifted US President Donald Trump's $4.5 trillion tax breaks and spending cuts bill to final passage Thursday, overcoming multiple setbacks to approve his signature second-term policy package before a self-imposed Fourth of July deadline. The tight roll call, 218-214, came at a potentially high political cost, with two Republicans joining all the Democrats in opposition. GOP leaders worked overnight, and the president himself leaned on a handful of sceptics to drop their opposition and send the bill to his desk to become law. Delhi govt approves waiver on late payment surcharge for inflated water bills and reinitiates key projects

New Delhi: Delhi govt has given in-principle approval to waive late payment surcharges on inflated water bills, which will bring relief to lakhs of people who have raised concerns about receiving inflated bills. The waiver, however, will be for domestic and govt houses, not for commercial consumers. Water minister Parvesh Verma Thursday said the scheme will be launched in two months. He said that the implementation awaits a software upgrade, shifting the existing Oracle-based system to a cloud-based platform. "Once the new system is operational, the full waiver rollout will begin. The move is expected to benefit thousands of households struggling with overdue charges, offering long-awaited financial relief on water billing," he said. According to an estimate, nearly 16 lakh out of these received inflated bills in the past few years. Many raised concerns about inaccurate billing and stopped making the payments, reducing the water utility's revenues. In Oct-Nov 2022, over 10,000 complaints were received about faulty water bills on the DJB portal. Past arrears and late payment surcharges added to the current bills were one of the main reasons for the high bills. Once these are waived, the bill will come down significantly. In another decision taken by govt, DJB will directly process and implement water supply and sewerage schemes for DDA and other land development agencies. Until 2019, such schemes were cleared at the level of the chief engineer (planning), enabling quicker execution, which led to delays, said Verma. With this latest board approval, DJB is now authorised to directly manage and carry forward all such projects, ensuring timely implementation, improved service delivery and enhanced revenue generation, he said. The board also approved the re-initiation of the Delhi Water Supply Improvement Project in the command area of Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant under Asian Development Bank funding. Originally sanctioned in 2013, the project remained unawarded until July 2020, leading ADB to withdraw funding, he said, adding, "After our intervention, ADB agreed to fund the project again." He said this will benefit over 30 lakh people, or 13% of Delhi's population. It will cover an area of 123 sqkm, including Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, Model Town, Lawrence Road, Punjabi Bagh, Jahangirpuri, Shastri Nagar and Pitampura. Meanwhile, a four-month extension has been granted to the Malviya Nagar Water Supply (MNWS) improvement project. Several RWAs had raised concerns over an imminent disruption to water services as a 12-year contract for round-the-clock supply was ending. Launched in 2013, MNWS was one of Delhi's earliest public-private partnership initiatives in the water sector, aiming to upgrade supply infrastructure and service including round-the-clock access to pockets like Navjiwan Vihar and Geetanjali Enclave. While a 24-hour water supply has remained limited, many areas have benefited from more reliable schedules, better pressure and quicker complaint redressal.

Consumer health cos woo Gen Z with chewables

NEW DELHI: Gen Z's preference for trendy, convenient, and non-pill OTC formats such as gummies, chewables and effervescent powders, combined with rising health awareness, is fuelling significant growth in India's consumer healthcare market. The trend is driving strong investments in innovation as companies including Haleon India, Dabur and Rasna seek to capitalise on emerging consumer trends and diverse cohorts. Despite sluggish demand, companies continue to invest steadily in innovation - both organically and through acquisitions - being aware that returns typically require a longer-term horizon. For some, like Haleon India (formerly GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare), this strategy is already paying off. The company achieved a high single-digit revenue growth in the quarter ended March 2025, outperforming other Asia-Pacific markets, including China. The UK-based giant, with revenues exceeding over $14.3 billion, plans to democratise healthcare in India - where high costs remain a barrier - by focusing on small, affordable packs of its leading brands tailored for value-conscious consumers, according to Navneet Saluja, general manager, Indian sub-continent, Haleon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Innovative formats like gummies, effervescent tablets, chewables, and liquid drops are gaining traction, driven by direct-to-consumer brands in India's over Rs 40,000 crore consumer healthcare market. This mirrors global trends, where convenience, palatability, and visual appeal are key factors shaping consumer preferences. Homegrown FMCG company Dabur has undertaken a comprehensive refresh of its 'Vision' strategy to achieve a sustainable double-digit CAGR by FY28 in both topline and bottomline. Says Dabur India CEO Mohit Malhotra: "Premiumisation and contemporisation across categories is a key pillar of this strategy. Some categories that we will be looking at include, gummies, powders and effervescent in the healthcare business. In addition, we have been increasing the relevance of our time-tested and efficacious products by introducing new age formats". And, to cater to health-conscious Gen Z, Rasna, a mass-market beverage brand, recently acquired ready-to-drink (RTD) brand Jumpin from Hershey's India. Piruz Khambatta, group chairman of Rasna says the company plans to tap into India's booming non-carbonated RTD market, with a vitamin-fortified fruit juice beverage that has low sugar content. These moves reflect a broader trend: The demand for convenient, on-the-go product options is rapidly expanding, unlocking strong growth potential in India.
