‘Mental health not a privilege but fundamental for overall well-being and everyone deserves access to consultations'
Ranchi: At a time when mental health remains stigmatised and often inaccessible to the economically weaker sections of society, a city-based psychiatrist, Dr Bhoomika Sachacher, is quietly leading by example. While managing a demanding clinical practice, she has consistently committed herself to providing free mental health consultations and counselling sessions to those who cannot afford paid care. Refusing to let financial hardship become a barrier to mental well-being, she ensures that no patient is turned away from her clinic due to their inability to pay. "Mental health is not a privilege. It is a fundamental part of overall well-being and everyone deserves help," says Dr Sachacher. Beyond her regular clinical duties, Dr Sachacher is also actively involved in community awareness efforts. She is frequently invited by educational institutions, colleges, NGOs and rural organisations to conduct free workshops, mental health talks, and stress management sessions for adolescents, students, parents and caregivers. These sessions often focus on early detection of psychological issues, coping strategies and eliminating stigma around those who are seeking help. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ₹6 Cr+ Max Estates 3 & 4 Bhk In Sector 36A Max Estates - Estate 361 Book Now Undo Dr Sachacher has conducted more than 100 workshops and awareness programmes across the state, from urban schools to remote villages, since 2015. In several rural outreach camps, she has taken the lead in educating children and their parents about emotional resilience, trauma recovery and mental well-being, often partnering with local NGOs to ensure recurring support. She is also engaged with digital mental health outreach, running a free Instagram page and a YouTube channel, where she shares expert insights, recorded sessions and helpful guidance on emotional health, depression, substance use and adolescent struggles. "During my academic training and early work as a research officer on addiction and mental illness, I realised the stark gap in access to professional help, especially for vulnerable groups. That understanding shaped my commitment to mental health equity," Dr Sachacher said. Even in her private clinic practice, patients, especially students who could not afford full consultation fees, were allowed to pay nominally or as per their capacity. If further psychiatric treatment or medication is needed, she ensures referrals to govt hospitals, where services are available free of cost. Sakshi Jaiswal, a student, said, "During a difficult phase of my life, she helped me find peace of mind and clarity in my thoughts."

Lumpy skin disease affects 1,327 cows in Nashik division
Nashik: As many as 1,327 cows have been diagnosed with the viral lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Nashik division within a fortnight. With 625 cases, Ahilyanagar district recorded the highest number of cases, Jalgaon following closely at 624. The latter has been the only one to have recorded a death so far. In Nashik district 25 cases were reported till Thursday evening. In what Baburao Narawade, animal husbandry regional joint commissioner, termed as 'occurrences', he said: "The clusters are apart and it has not assumed the proportions to be called as outbreak so far." LSD is a contagious viral infection characterized by fever, nodules on skin and reduced milk production in cattle. Another senior official said of the total number of infected cows, the recovery rate is about 50%. 645 infected cattle have already recovered, 681 are currently undergoing treatment and one has died, totaling 1,327. The animal husbandry department is taking measures across the division to contain further spread of the disease. These include cleanliness of cow sheds and restricting cattle movement in and out of epicentres—the affected villages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Highest Paying Degrees For 2025 Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo "The department has identified 197 epicentres after occurrences of the disease were reported from these areas," Narawade said, adding that Ahilyanagar has 108 such centres, while Jalgaon has 72. Ahilyanagar has the highest population of cattle at 13.6lakh. Nashik follows with 8.9lakh, Jalgaon with 5.7lakh, Dhule and Nandurbar with 3.5lakh and 3.1lakh cattle each, amounting to 34.85lakh cattle. "In Nashik district, 15 out of 25 are active cases, and the condition of three cows is serious," the officer added. Due to the absence of a specific vaccine to treat this disease, goat pox vaccine is used for developing immunity among cattle. In Ahilyanagar, over 95% of cattle are vaccinated. In Dhule, the coverage is 93%. Narawade said although this vaccine is available across the region, the majority of infected cattle is calves who could not be vaccinated either because they were too young or born after the last vaccination drive.

Maharashtra govt issues SOP to curb food poisoning in mid-day meals
Mumbai: Due to a rising number of cases of food poisoning caused by mid-day meals, the government has decided to codify and compile all food preparation and storage rules for mid-day meals into a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Checking of grains from suppliers, conducting regular health check-ups of cooks and staffers, and the preservation of a sample of the food served for 24 hours, as well as laboratory tests of food samples from randomly selected schools in each block every month, are among the various measures developed into an SOP. A senior education department official confirmed that after a number of food poisoning cases—like the recent one in Buldhana, where 13 tribal girls fell ill after eating a mid-day meal—the department issued a government resolution laying down the procedure precisely. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The SOP specifies what each stakeholder should do to prevent food poisoning. The School Management Committee will be responsible for checking the quality of grains received from the supplier and ensuring regular health check-ups for cooks and support staff. A headmaster must taste each meal prior to serving it to students, checking for quality and taste. He will also be responsible for keeping a sample of the food served for 24 hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: Teaspoon On an Empty Stomach Slims Waist from 36 To 22 Health Wellness Journal Learn more Undo Every Block Education Officer has to inspect the godowns where grain and other foodstuffs are stored every month. If a godown is found to be dirty, a fine of ₹50,000 will be levied, and a repeat offence will incur a fine of ₹1,00,000. The SOP also prohibits any food prepared outside the school from being served to children. Mahendra Ganpule, the former head of the Maharashtra School Principals' Association, drew attention to the lack of time a headmaster or teacher has to check the grain when a supplier delivers it: "We do not get time to check the grain properly. There should be at least 10 to 15 minutes provisioned for each school for the thorough checking of grain." The SOP also states the steps to be taken after an incident of food poisoning: isolate students showing symptoms and provide medical aid, inform the village head, police, and all competent authorities, collect and send food and water samples for testing, and if the lab reports confirm that food poisoning was caused by poor-quality materials, a criminal case should be filed against the supplier and payments withheld.
