Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka Take Contrasting Routes Into Wimbledon Semi-Finals
Carlos Alcaraz swept into the Wimbledon semi-finals for a third successive year as the defending champion demolished Cameron Norrie, while world number one Aryna Sabalenka survived a major scare to reach the last four on Tuesday. Alcaraz needed just 99 minutes to win 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 in his most commanding performance in this year's tournament. The Spanish second seed dropped four sets in a series of scrappy displays during his run to the last eight. But Alcaraz was back to his imperious best in the quarter-finals, blasting 39 winners against the overwhelmed British world number 61, setting up a last-four clash with American fifth seed Taylor Fritz. Alcaraz is on a career-best 23-match winning run since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April -- a superb streak which has brought him titles at the French Open, the Rome Masters and Monte Carlo. The Spaniard, who vanquished Novak Djokovic in the last two Wimbledon finals, has won 34 of his 37 Tour-level matches on grass, while his last defeat at the All England Club came against Jannik Sinner in the fourth round in 2022. "To be able to play another semi-final here at Wimbledon is super special," Alcaraz said. "It's going to be great. I'm really happy with the way I played against a really difficult player," Wimbledon's controversial line technology system malfunctioned again as Fritz beat Russian 17th seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7/4) to reach his first Wimbledon semi-final. Swedish umpire Louise Azemar Engzell had to stop a point in the opening game of the fourth set on Court One when "fault" was incorrectly called after a Fritz forehand landed well inside the baseline. The call of "fault", rather than "out", and positioning of the ball suggested the system was still tracking Fritz's serve as opposed to a rally and the point had to be replayed. Tournament organisers were forced to apologise and make a change to the system to avoid further issues after a major error in Sonay Kartal's fourth-round defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the women's draw. - 'I need some time to cool down' - A fully automated system has replaced human line judges at Wimbledon for the first time this year, in line with the Australian Open and the US Open. Tournament organisers claimed the system had failed to reset because the ball from Fritz's first serve was still being retrieved when he started lining up his second. "The player's service motion began while the BBG (ball boy or girl) was still crossing the net and therefore the system didn't recognise the start of the point," an All England Club statement said. "As such the chair umpire instructed the point be replayed." Sabalenka fought back from the brink of a shock exit to reach the semi-finals with a gutsy 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win against Germany's Laura Siegemund. She twice trailed by a break in the final set on Centre Court and was two games away from crashing out before staging a dramatic revival to win in two hours and 54 minutes of unrelenting tension. The 27-year-old top seed is through to the Wimbledon semi-finals for the third time after losing at that stage in 2021 and 2023. Beaten in the Australian and French Open finals this year after winning the US Open in 2024, Sabalenka remains on course to reach a fourth successive Grand Slam title match. Sabalenka remains the only one of the top six women's seeds still standing at the tournament after two weeks of shocks. "That was a real test. I need some time to cool down and recover after this," Sabalenka said. In the semi-finals, the Belarusian will face American 13th seed Amanda Anisimova, who defeated Russian world number 50 Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 7-6 (11/9). Anisimova took an eight-month break from tennis in 2023 after suffering with depression brought on by the scrutiny and expectations that came from her run to the French Open semi-finals aged just 17. "It's been an extraordinary year for me. So many highs. It's been such a ride," she said.

Wimbledon 2025: Carlos Alcaraz Dominates Cameron Norrie To Reach Semi-Finals
Last Updated: Carlos Alcaraz reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the third year in a row, beating Cameron Norrie in 99 minutes. He will face Taylor Fritz next. Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Wimbledon semi-finals for the third consecutive year after the defending champion overwhelmed Britain's Cameron Norrie in a Centre Court masterclass on Tuesday. Alcaraz required just 99 minutes to defeat Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 in his most dominant performance of this year's tournament. The Spanish second seed had dropped four sets in a series of inconsistent displays during his journey to the quarter-finals. However, Alcaraz returned to his formidable best in the quarter-finals, delivering 39 winners to secure a semi-final clash with American fifth seed Taylor Fritz. 'To be able to play another semi-final here at Wimbledon is super-special," Alcaraz said. It's going to be great. I'm really happy with the way I played against a really difficult player," he added. With world number one Jannik Sinner battling an elbow injury and trailing by two sets in the fourth round before his opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired, Alcaraz emerges as the favourite for the title as the tournament approaches its final stages. Alcaraz is currently on a career-best 23 match winning streak since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April—a remarkable run that has earned him titles at the French Open, Rome Masters, and Monte Carlo. The Spaniard, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the last two Wimbledon finals, has won 34 of his 37 Tour-level matches on grass, with his last loss at the All England Club occurring against Sinner in the fourth round in 2022. 'Taylor is playing great. The grass season has been really successful for him so far with two titles and a semi-final here," Alcaraz said. 'I have to be ready for that battle. I will try to play the same level as today. 'I will rest up a little bit and enjoy the time with my team and my family. For sure I'm going to play some golf to switch off my mind a little bit," he added. What Record Did Carlos Alcaraz Break? Alcaraz is only the second Spanish man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals at least three times, following Rafael Nadal, who made eight appearances in the last four. The five-time Grand Slam champion is striving to become the fifth man to win Wimbledon three consecutive years in the Open Era, joining Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Djokovic. Making his eighth Grand Slam semi-final appearance, Alcaraz is also aiming to become the second-youngest player in the Open Era, after Borg, to win six major men's singles titles. Alcaraz quickly established his dominance with breaks in the third and fifth games of a one-sided opening set. The 22-year-old remained in control in the second set as the world number 61 struggled to halt Alcaraz's momentum. The third set followed a similar pattern, with the decisive break occurring in the sixth game, sealing Alcaraz's victory in a commanding fashion. First Published: July 08, 2025, 23:43 IST

FC Goa settle for Javier Siverio as new striking option
Javier Siverio scored seven goals in 26 appearances in the ISL for Jamshedpur FC last season Panaji: FC Goa have identified Spanish striker Javier Siverio as their fourth foreign player for the season and are expected to complete the signing later this week. Among the six foreign players, only Dejan Drazic has an existing contract for next season. Having retained Borja Herrera and Iker Guarrotxena from last season's campaign, Goa will now add Siverio to the list. Two other new foreign players are expected to be signed, as replacements for captain Odei Onainida, who will return to Spain, and defensive midfielder Carl McHugh, whose two-year contract ended last month. 'Siverio may seem like an underwhelming signing, given that Goa have brought in tried and tested strikers in the past, but his (four-year) experience in Indian football cannot be discounted,' a senior official told TOI. 'He is also a team man, someone who will add to the team's strengths. It's important to have a strong and united dressing room, since only four of the six foreign players are allowed to take the field.' Siverio scored seven goals in 26 appearances for Jamshedpur FC last season. His India sojourn started with Hyderabad in 2021, where he was handpicked by coach Manolo Marquez after their time with Las Palmas B in 2016-17. The Spanish striker won the ISL trophy with Hyderabad, before moving to East Bengal for a short stint, winning the Super Cup, and then Jamshedpur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing Older Women should Avoid Learn More Undo Siverio will be a direct replacement for Armando Sadiku, who mutually parted ways with Goa after being knocked out of the Indian Super League (ISL). The Albanian striker took the league by storm with a fiery start, netting eight goals in his first seven consecutive games, the best start for any Goa player since inception. However, with playing time restricted, Sadiku struggled to find the back of the net in the latter part of the season, scoring only two goals in his next 17 matches. The Albanian striker started just six of his last 15 matches in the ISL, with coach Manolo opting for Guarrotxena. Goa are now preparing for the Preliminary Round of the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Two clash against Oman's Al Seeb FC on August 13. The winner of the single-leg clash at Fatorda will qualify for AFC Champions League Two, the second-tier club competition in Asian football, while a loss for the hosts will see them dropped into the AFC Challenge League, a rung below. Goa qualified for the continental championships after winning the Super Cup. This will be their second appearance on the Asian stage after the debut at the AFC Champions League in 2021. Winners of the AFC Cup in 2022, Al Seeb are the big guns of Oman football, having won the Oman Professional League four times in the last six years.
