US says airstrike killed Islamic State official in Syria
WASHINGTON: The US military announced Thursday that a recent airstrike had killed an Islamic State group official in northwest Syria.
In a post to social media, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces 'conducted a precision airstrike in northwest Syria killing Rakhim Boev, a Syria-based ISIS official,' using another name for IS.
The post on X said Boev was 'involved in planning external operations threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and civilians.'
The accompanying image depicts an SUV vehicle with a bashed-in windshield and roof.
AFP previously reported that two people were killed in separate drone strikes Tuesday, on a car and a motorcycle, in the northwestern bastion of the Islamist former rebels who now head the Syrian government.
A call to CENTCOM seeking confirmation that the incidents are related was not immediately returned.
The twin drone strikes in the Idlib region mirror the US-led coalition's past strikes on jihadists in the area.
During a meeting in Riyadh last month, US President Donald Trump called on his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa to help Washington prevent a resurgence by IS.

KYIV: Fresh Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian regions in the night of Saturday to Sunday wounded at least seven people, according to the war-torn country's authorities. Since launching its invasion in February 2022 Russia has launched near-nightly bombardments of its neighbour's towns and cities, raining down drones and missiles on military and civilian targets alike. Talks on ending the fighting between the two sides are at an impasse, with Kyiv accusing Moscow, which occupies nearly one-fifth of Ukraine's territory, of wanting the war to drag on. In the night the Russian army launched 477 drones and 60 missiles of various types, according to the Ukrainian air fosrce, which said it had intercepted 475 and 39 of those respectively. Pointing to the bombardment, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky argued they showed that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin 'has long decided to pursue this war, despite the international community's calls for peace'. 'Ukraine must reinforce its aerial defence, which is the best way to protect lives,' he added, repeating his willingness to buy US-made Patriot anti-missile systems. US President Donald Trump, who has tilted Washington's policy on the war in favour of Moscow since retaking office, has not responded to Kyiv's request. In the central Cherkasy region, the Russian strikes wounded a total of six people, including a child, the Ukrainian police said on Telegram. Far from the frontline in the western Ivano-Frankivsk region, the strikes likewise wounded a woman who was 'taken to hospital', according to the regional governor Svitlana Onyshchuk. Besides the civilian casualties, a fighter pilot was killed in the night after his F-16 jet was damaged in mid-air 'without him having the time to eject', according to an air force statement. Paying the pilot his respects, Zelensky said he was working to shoot down Russian projectiles before his death. In the morning after the nighttime strikes, a Russian drone attack killed a 60-year-old man after hitting his car in the northwest Kharkiv region, where the Russian army is on the march, according to the authorities. For its part the Russian army said it had intercepted three Ukrainian drones in the night of Saturday to Sunday.

Tok Mat: Umno, BN open to working with Sabah parties in state polls
TANGKAK: Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) are open to forging alliances with Sabah-based parties for the coming state election. Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that BN recognised the need to work with other parties. "We can no longer go it alone. We need other partners to face this state election," he said, adding BN has already agreed to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the polls. He added that the coalition was also exploring cooperation with local parties. "We want to enter the Sabah state election as a strong team, not one that is forced to fend off all sorts of things," he said after officiating the Ledang Umno divisional meeting here today. Mohamad said a strong team would ensure voters are not confused when giving their support, thus enabling them to govern the state. Previously, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) rejected political cooperation with BN in this state election. PBS was a former BN component party before leaving the coalition after the 14th General Election, following BN's defeat. The Sabah State Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year. Earlier this week, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin denied inviting PBS to rejoin the coalition or work together in the coming election. Trump backs Netanyahu, slams Israeli corruption trial
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Saturday the United States was "not going to stand" for the continued prosecution of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on corruption charges. "The United States of America spends Billions of Dollar a year, far more than on any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. Netanyahu responded on X, saying "thank you again" and promising that "together, we... will make the Middle East Great Again!". An Israeli court on Friday rejected Netanyahu's request to postpone giving testimony in his corruption trial, ruling that he had not provided adequate justification for his request. In one case, Netanyahu and his wife Sara are accused of accepting more than US$260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewelry and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favors. In two other cases, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favorable coverage from two Israeli media outlets. Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing and has thanked Trump for his support in Israel's war with Iran, which saw a ceasefire agreement earlier this week. His lawyer had asked the court to excuse the leader from hearings over the next two weeks, saying he needs to concentrate on "security issues." Trump on Wednesday sprung to Netanyahu's defence, describing the case against him as a "witch hunt." On Saturday, he described Netanyahu as a "War Hero" and said the case would distract the prime minister from negotiations with Iran and with Hamas, the Gaza-based Palestinian armed group that Israel is at war with. "This travesty of 'Justice' will interfere with both Iran and Hamas negotiations," said Trump, although it was unclear what negotiations he was referring to with regards to Iran. Talks are ongoing for the return of the remaining hostages and the bodies of those killed, while Israel's punishing war on Gaza continues unabated. The US leader also likened Netanyahu's legal troubles to his own before he took office for his second term. "It is a POLITICAL WITCH HUNT, very similar to the Witch Hunt that I was forced to endure," said Trump. The Republican was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in May 2024 in a case related to hush money payments to a porn star.
