All we know as major UK mobile network goes down for entire day

Daily Mirror25-06-2025
A mass outage has left Three customers unable to make or receive calls - and some say they are also experiencing problems with text messages and mobile data connection
Thousands of furious mobile phone customers have been left unable to make or receive calls after the Three network went down for an entire day.
Some users said they were still experiencing problems this evening after a major outage took out "voice services" on the mobile network operator, which currently has 10.5 million active customers in the UK. Three - which recently announced a £16.5 billion merger with rival Vodafone - said it is "continuing to investigate" the problems and was "so sorry" to customers who have been affected. While the network says that data services are unaffected, some have said they are also unable to connect to 4G and 5G. Here's everything we know about the Three network outage:

What's happened?
The outage affecting the Three network started at around 7.45am this morning, according to Downdetector.
It's left many customers unable to receive or make phonecalls - with some taking to social media to complain that they had missed important calls from work, family members or their doctor as a result.
Three have been providing updates on their X (formerly Twitter) page throughout the day, and said in its first response at 9.36am: "We're aware of an issue affecting voice services and are working hard to fix it."
Are data services working?
According to Three, while many customers have been unable to make calls during today's outage, data services such as 4G and 5G should be working as normal.
But some users have got in touch with the Mirror to say that they have also experienced problems with their data connection, in addition to the issues with telephone and SMS services.

Are other networks affected?
iD Mobile, which also uses the Three network, has also confirmed issues with calls, text message's and the Live Chat function this evening.
Customers on Smarty mobile, which is owned by Three, are also reporting issues.
Why can't I use Vodafone signal if they're the same company now?
After approval from Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) earlier this year, Three UK recently merged with Vodafone in a bid to create a "new force in UK mobile."

However, Three customers can't use Vodafone's network just yet.
In the FAQs section of its website, Vodafone says that "from mid-June" Three UK customers would receive a 20% boost in 4G data speeds, and that "within a few months" Vodafone and Three customers would be able to "automatically use each other's networks".
It means that today's outage has likely come too early for Three customers to benefit from the merger.
What's the latest?
Though reports of the outage dipped on tracking services such as Downdetector later in the day, some customers say they are still experiencing problems.
In an update this evening, the mobile network said: "We're continuing to investigate an issue affecting voice services on our network. Data services remain unaffected, so customers can make calls using third-party messaging apps. A small number of text messages are also impacted.
"We understand how frustrating this is and are so sorry if you've been impacted."

O2 issues warning to customers as major change will stop HUNDREDS of popular phones from working - see if yours will be affected

It is the mobile network service used by millions of people around the UK. But O2 has now issued a warning to customers ahead of a major change that will stop some phones from working. The UK's 3G network is slowly being switched off in favour of faster, more reliable 4G and 5G. EE and Vodafone have already switched off their networks, and now O2 is the latest company to deactivate this older system. Customers who haven't upgraded will still be able to make calls and send text messages as normal, but won't be able to use mobile data. O2 says that the 3G network currently carries less than two per cent of total network traffic. That means most customers with newer devices won't notice the change, since their phones don't use the 3G network. However, there are concerns that the switch could leave older and more vulnerable customer suddenly unable to use their phones. Virgin Media O2's 3G network was first launched 20 years ago, but has since become outdated. The company has already begun deactivating the network in some parts of the country, starting with Durham in April this year. This was followed by Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, which all lost 3G connection in the following months. Virgin Media O2 says that the next town to have its network shut down will be Torquay in August, with the rest of the UK network being entirely withdrawn by the end of the year. This change will also affect customers of networks which use O2's 3G infrastructure, including Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile, and giffgaff. To ensure that older and vulnerable customers, who might still be using older devices, don't get left behind, Virgin Media O2 has partnered with the charity Age UK. Jeanie York, Virgin Media O2's Chief Technology Officer, says: 'While we know that the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G handset and do not need to take any action, our priority has always been to support the minority who may be impacted. 'Given that many of these customers are likely to be older and potentially less tech-savvy, it makes perfect sense to partner with Age UK as we carry out this migration.' Age UK will provide additional support for the older customers who will need to upgrade their phones to keep accessing mobile data. The charity will provide information on its website and social media channels and via its Advice Line. Customers with an old, unwanted handset are encouraged to recycle it through O2 recycle, which could offer them cash in exchange for their old phone. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, says: 'The 3G switch-off may feel daunting for many older people so it's important that we do all we can to support those affected. 'It's important to note that for those using a 3G network who don't wish to change their handset, for now they will still be able to make phone calls and send texts as they do today – it's just their mobile data this change will affect.' Australia's TPG Telecom flags $1.9 billion payout to reset structure, cut debt

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Australia's TPG Telecom ( opens new tab said on Tuesday it would return A$3 billion ($1.94 billion) to shareholders as part of a broader plan to streamline its capital structure and reduce debt, sending its shares to a three-year high. TPG finalised its A$5.25 billion transaction with Macquarie-backed Vocus in July, generating net cash proceeds of A$4.7 billion. Shares in TPG rallied as much as 4.2% to their highest since August 2022. To cushion the impact of the capital return on its free float, TPG will offer minority shareholders the option to reinvest their proceeds into new company shares. The re-investment is expected to raise A$688 million, lifting TPG's free float from 23% to around 30% at current prices, and allowing minority holders to increase stakes. The capital raise could be value-accretive by reducing debt, but flags potential dilution concerns depending on how the new shares are structured, Bell Direct senior market analyst Grady Wulff said. TPG's top shareholders, including CK Hutchison, Vodafone, Washington H Soul Pattinson ( opens new tab, and the founding family, support the proposal and together hold around 77% of the register. The company added it would use A$1.7 billion from the Vocus proceeds and the A$688 million raised to repay up to A$2.4 billion in bank borrowings "We anticipate strong free cash flow generation over the coming years due to service revenue growth, operating cost efficiency, capital expenditure reductions, and lower borrowing costs," said CEO and managing director Iñaki Berroeta. However, TPG cut its annual pro-forma earnings forecast to a range of A$1.61 billion to A$1.66 billion, down from A$1.95 billion to A$2.03 billion, reflecting the absence of earnings from the divested assets. Intensifying competition and new players are putting downward pressure on margins, and TPG's revised outlook highlights the broader challenges all telecom providers are now facing, added Wulff.
