While the planting numbers are encouraging, environmentalists warn that quantity alone does not ensure ecological impact.
'The state needs to pay equal attention to the survival of saplings,' said a conservationist, adding that watering, fencing, and follow-up care are often overlooked after planting drives.
With over 1 lakh saplings still short of the target and several departments yet to catch up, officials say mid-year reviews will focus on ground verification and sustainability tracking. Departments lagging behind are expected to intensify efforts in the monsoon months, when conditions for planting are most favourable, they added.

Swachh Survekshan survey validates Hyderabad's clean image
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is set to enter the elite seven-star category of Swachh Survekshan, becoming the only city in Telangana to earn the coveted 'garbage-free' status at the highest tier. Adding to this feat is an unprecedented fourth consecutive 'Water Plus' certification by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, positioning the city as India's gold standard for integrated urban sanitation. In doing so, Hyderabad is setting a model for other metropolitan cities, from managing waste efficiently, right from doorstep collection to final disposal, to ensuring that every drop of wastewater is treated to national standards before being released. The awards will be presented on July 17 in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu will felicitate the winners. GHMC officials confirmed to TNIE that they received a call from MoHUA officials regarding both the seven-star rating and the Water Plus re-certification, although the official Swachh Survekshan rankings will also be announced at the same event. The annual Swachh Survekshan survey, part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, assesses cities on sanitation and cleanliness efforts. GHMC officials credited the achievement to the Swachh Hyderabad initiatives and thanked the residents and sanitation staff for their collective effort. In 2023, Hyderabad was ranked ninth nationally and received a five-star rating under the Garbage-Free Cities Protocol. Officials noted that the seven-star rating considers several parameters, including door-to-door collection, source segregation, waste processing and disposal, citizen feedback, and grievance redressal. The rating is based on the SMART approach (Single metric, Measurable, Achievable, Rigorous verification, and Targeted outcomes) across 12 key indicators. Hyderabad earned the Water Plus tag by meeting CPCB standards for wastewater treatment. This was made possible by the effective functioning of sewage treatment plants (STPs) operated by the HMWSSB, which treat wastewater from households and commercial establishments before being discharged.

Silt dumped near the culvert fosters vegetative growth
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has its own 'Vana Mahotsavam' on the side, at culverts of the stormwater drains in the city as vouched by the greenery growing out of the mounds of silt removed from the drains. In a curious instance which speaks volumes about the quality of the corporation's drain desilting works, castor plants could be seen growing out of the silt deposited on the roadside at Aramghar in Rajendranagar Circle. Two pictures were taken of the same location with a gap of just over a month, the first picture on May 27, of a mound of silt on the side of a nala culvert, and the second, on July 9, of a bushy growth of castor plants on the mound at the same location. A bag of waste, dumped near the mound and remaining at the same location after a month, speaks loudly of the effectiveness of sanitation in the area. The GHMC begins the desilting operations for clearing the stormwater drains ahead of monsoons. Bids are called circle-wise, agencies are selected, and the works are given, with the GHMC confined to supervisory role. As per the procedure, after desilting, the silt is deposited on the roadside and allowed to sit there for a while till it becomes dry, before being carted off to the solid waste management facility at Jawaharnagar. Wet silt cannot be carried as it drips along the way creating difficulty to the commuters, and also because wet silt weighs more - costing the GHMC more for its treatment. However, carting of the silt is one problematic area where complaints abound with little action. The silt deposited near the catchpits mostly flows back into the drain during rains. Occasionally, when the silt is high in quantity, vegetation grows out of it as in the present case. Social media platform X is full of complaints about uncarted silt from areas such as Kurmaguda, Kukatpally, Uppal, Santoshnagar and several other localities. Action is scarce even when the complaint is registered in My GHMC app. 'GHMC's drainage cleaning process is incomplete, with workers removing silt from drains but not properly disposing of it, leaving it piled up near the drains causes unhygienic conditions, foul smells and citizen inhaling flying dust from silt....' complains one Nagarju Talari, an X user. The Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) forces on Friday, repeated the desilting operations on the Bulkapur drain near Khairatabad, which yielded tonnes of trash carelessly thrown into the drain. Large amount of thermocol and plastic waste was retrieved from the drain which had been desilted already as part of the pre-monsoon drive. 'Garbage comes flowing every day, and gets stuck at the culvert, requiring continuous desilting operations. Desilting is not strictly our job, but we are pitching in to ensure free flow of stormwater in the drains in case of heavy rain,' said HYDRAA Commissioner A. V. Ranganath.

Hyd top cop joins Lal Darwaza Bonalu festivities, assures full security
Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner CV Anand participated in the Lal Darwaza Bonalu festival, including the Shikara Puja and Dwajarohanam (flag hoisting) ceremonies. The Commissioner stated that it is customary for the temple committee to invite the Hyderabad City Kotwal for these annual events. CV Anand noted that the Bonalu festivities have been observed here for approximately 120 years, continuing the same tradition. Across Telangana, people celebrate the Bonalu festival with great devotion for a month. CV Anand was accompanied by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, K Apoorva Rao (DCP Special Branch), Sneha Mehra (DCP South Zone), and R Venkateswarlu (DCP Traffic), along with other officials, Temple Committee Chairman B Maruthi Yadav, and committee members. The Commissioner recalled that the Lal Darwaza Simhavahini Sri Mahankali Temple is a historically significant temple. In 1908, severe floods caused by heavy rains and a widespread plague epidemic in the areas surrounding this temple led to the deaths of approximately 50,000 people. At that time, Hyderabad's population stood at 4 lakh. Upon the advice of Prime Minister Kishen Pershad, the then Nizam, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, arranged special prayers for the Goddess. 'Following these prayers, the Musi River floods subsided, and the epidemic receded. Since then, it has been a tradition to celebrate Bonalu during the Ashadha month,' stated CV Anand. On this occasion, the Commissioner stated that the Police Department has made all necessary security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents. He recalled that the Golconda Bonalu and Balkampet Bonalu were conducted peacefully.
