Family of Greg Monks gather for funeral as mourners donate to children's charity
A funeral has taken place for a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal.
Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, vanished just hours into a stag do with his pals in the Algarve party resort of Albufeira.
The 38-year-old had been missing for a week before Portuguese authorities discovered his body at the bottom of a ravine on Wednesday, June 4.
Police believe Greg became lost while attempting to find his way back to his hotel and tragically fell to his death.
His devastated family, including his mum, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, were forced to return home without his body as they waited for repatriation.
His family and loved ones gathered at Daldowie Crematorium's West Chapel near Glasgow to say their goodbyes today.
The service was also shown in the East Chapel and live-streamed online for those unable to attend in person.
Mourners were asked to donate to children's charity Cash for Kids instead of bringing flowers.
Those celebrating Greg's life spoke after the service. Sharon Cooke said: "A truly beautiful service, you did Greg proud. All the love in the world to you all."

Kelly Ann added: "The service was absolutley beautiful. His friends and family did him very proud. Rest in peace now Greg."
On Monday evening before his funeral, loved ones gathered for an emotional balloon release at Fullarton Park in Glasgow. Attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg.
Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, previously spoke to the Daily Record about the agony of losing her brother – but said the family were grateful for some sense of closure.
She said: "It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother.
"We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send-off he deserves."
Greg had travelled to Albufeira for a five-day stag do, where he was due to be a groomsman. However, just hours into the trip he became separated from the group on the strip. The last sighting of him was captured in a quiet residential area around three miles from the main strip.
Jillian has urged groups heading abroad to look after one another and stay together.
She said: 'In places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened.
'Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home.'
A fundraiser launched during the search – and later used to help with repatriation - has raised more than £34,000, showing just how loved Greg was by all who knew him.

Everything we know on Diogo Jota's death – cause of crash to reason for car trip
Diogo Jota died in the early hours of Thursday morning to leave the footballing world in mourning at the loss of the 28-year-old, who was a husband and father to three young children Liverpool striker Diogo Jota died in a car crash in Spain after a Lamborghini he was travelling in veered off the road and burst into flames following a tyre blowout. Tributes from the football world and beyond flooded in for the 28-year-old father of three, who had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso just 11 days ago. Jota was found dead alongside his brother Andre Silva following the crash on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria near the city of Zamora at 12:40am on Thursday. The supercar they were in ended up on the side of the road in a fireball wreckage. A source from the government sub-delegation in Zamora confirmed 'a possible speeding incident' was being looked at. Liverpool said the club was 'devastated' by the news and that it was an 'unimaginable loss'. The Portuguese Football Federation also said it was 'devastated' to learn of the tragedy, adding: 'Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football.' Police said no other vehicles were involved in the incident. As the football world mourns the passing of the popular forward, here's what is known about the accident that claimed his and his brother's lives. Police confirmation The first public confirmation of the deaths of Jota and Silva came from the Civil Guard in Zamora, with the footballers having been confirmed as dead by medical personnel shortly upon their arrival on the scene. A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Zamora said: "The investigation into the crash is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. We believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road. The full police report once it is completed will be submitted to a duty court in Zamora which has launched an ongoing judicial investigation into this crash. 'That report is going to take time to complete, probably about four or five days but possibly longer. At this moment in time it is impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going but that is something the Civil Guard investigators will be able to detail at least approximately in their final report from things like the skid marks. What I can confirm is that no other vehicle was involved and no-one else was hurt." First picture of crash After news of the deaths were confirmed, the first pictures from the incident were released which showed the harrowing wreckage of the Lamborghini by the side of the road. In the photo, several medical personnel can be seen stood around the burnt vehicle. Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region published a statement where they confirmed the crash which read: "The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident, and the vehicle was on fire. "1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident. From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene." 'Road full of potholes' Following the death of Jota and Silva, much has been made of the A52 where the deaths occurred, with many taking to social media to criticise the safety of the road. While there has been no indication thus far on whether the condition of the road played a role in the crash, that hasn't stopped people expressing frustration at the supposed "deplorable" state of the road. One X user said: "This is the highway/goat track where Diogo Jota and his brother died. I don't know if they had a puncture, or if an animal got in their way.... What I do know is that the A52 is in a deplorable state." A second wrote: "You're absolutely right, when I come from France and I go to Vigo, I go through there and I'm always afraid of that road with all the potholes it has, it can break the suspension." While a third added: "I drove around it once in 2023, and I found it to be in a terrible state. I can't conceive that it is still not being resurfaced." And a fourth said: "The puncture is easy, the road is full of potholes, it's a real danger." Identity confirmed by police After the Lamborghini had veered off the road, it had burst into flames and was later put out by firefighters with the inferno having spread to nearby vegetation. Due to the vehicle being incinerated, the identities of Jota and Silva were confirmed by way of documents found at the scene of the accident and in the car. It's understood that it was a license plate that proved to be the vital piece of evidence that allowed authorities to confirm the deaths of the two brothers. Forensic experts who are conducting the autopsy have been forced to turn to DNA tests. Reason for car trip With Liverpool's pre-season set to commence next week, it was learned that Jota was en route to the port city of Santander in order to catch a ferry back to the UK when the car crash occurred. Jota, alongside his younger brother, opted to drive after the Portugal international had been advised not to fly after going under the knife for lung surgery. The pair were set to stop in Benavente overnight before taking the ferry to Portsmouth in order to return to Merseyside in what would have been his sixth season at Anfield.

East Lothian nurse caught after police raid home with disturbing discovery
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An East Lothian nurse is facing a jail sentence after he was caught in possession of thousands of child abuse images - including victims as young as two-years-old. David Marsh had downloaded the shocking material depicting both male and female children from apps including Snapchat, WhatsApp and Kik messenger over a six year period. Marsh, 60, was also found in possession of several sexualised videos he had received from a vulnerable 12-year-old autistic child after making contact with her over the internet. The care home nurse, from Dunbar, East Lothian, admitted accessing the depraved material during a police interview but denied to officers to having a sexual interest in children. Marsh pleaded guilty to two offences involving child abuse committed between 2018 and 2024 when he appeared in the dock at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday. Prosecutor Matthew Miller told the court police raided Marsh's home after receiving intelligence that a Snapchat account accessing the illicit material had been traced to the property in June last year. The officers were allowed entry by a relative and Marsh was said to have arrived home a short time later at around 8 am on August 6 last year. Mr Miller said 'a number of mobile phones and devices were seized' during the raid and were later found to hold indecent images of children on them. The court was told four mobiles and an electronic tablet contained a total of 2448 images and videos with hundreds rated at Category A - the worst end of the spectrum. Mr Miller told the court officers also discovered Snapchat logs detailing the sexual contact Marsh had with a 12-year-old child who was described as being 'vulnerable' and suffering from autism. Marsh was subsequently found to be in possession of videos of the child engaging in solo sexual activity that she had sent him but he denied sending images of himself back to the victim. The court heard Marsh is a father of two and is employed as a nurse practitioner at a residential care home. Defence agent Steven Donald said he would reserve his mitigation to the sentencing hearing. Sheriff Fergus Thomson agreed to release Marsh on bail and placed him on the sex offenders register on an interim basis. The sheriff also said Marsh's name will be passed on to Scottish Ministers for inclusion on the list of those banned from working with children and vulnerable adults in the future. Marsh pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children at his home between October 7, 2018 and October 6 last year. He also admitted to intentionally causing a child, who had not attained the age of 13, to participate in sexual activity and did request images of her masturbating and send them to him between January 3 and October 28, 2021.
