'Beautiful' sand tribute to Greg Monks created on beach in Portugal

Greg's sister Jillian said the tribute had brought the family some comfort as his funeral took place on Wednesday. A tribute to a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal has been created in the sand at a beach in the Algarve. Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, vanished from the party resort of Albufeira on May 28, with his body being found in a ravine days later on June 4. ‌ The 38-year-old's funeral took place on Wednesday, June 25 at Daldowie Crematorium. His sister Jillian Monks said the sand design, created by Portuguese artist Vitor Raposo, has brought the family some comfort during the difficult week. ‌ Mr Raposo shared the artwork at Praia Maria Luisa beach on social media. He also uses the beach for designs to honour marriage proposals and anniversaries, reports the BBC. The design consists of intricately drawn circles around a thistle and the words: "In loving memory of Greg Monks, 1986 - 2025." Underneath it reads, "Forever in our hearts, simply the best", above a letter G and a blue love heart. Over £34,000 has been donated to a fundraiser, which was launched during the search but later supported Greg's loved ones and assisted with repatriation. Jillian told BBC Scotland News: "Seeing the beautiful tribute to Greg did bring us some comfort that he has touched so many people. ‌ "Speaking to so many people who have moved to the area that Greg went missing, seeing them offering so much help and support, has shown us there are so many good people out there." She added the family were still coming to terms with what had happened, and that his death had "left such a huge hole in all of our lives." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "People all over the world were watching [the funeral] on the link. It reached maximum capacity which just shows how loved he was. It was comforting to hear lovely stories about Greg and how much he meant to all." Greg was reported missing by friends after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the early hours of May 28, just hours into their trip. A search was launched by Portuguese police, and his body was discovered in the Cerro de Aguia area, three miles away from where he had last been seen, five days later. On Monday evening before his funeral, loved ones gathered for an emotional balloon release at Fullarton Park in Glasgow. Attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg.

Faulty Akl water meters sees some overcharged, others with zero fees

A number of Aucklanders have received Watercare bills that say they've used zero water, while others claim they're being overcharged. The zero fee bills claim customers have not used a single drop in the past month or in some cases for months. The issue stems from Watercare's smart meters, which it told Checkpoint more than 13,000 of are not working. The water supplier also said they've known about problems with one type of smart meter since October last year, and the fault has so far affected around one-third of the 40,000 meters installed since 2022. Greg is one customer who has been receiving zero fee bills, the first one arriving in May. ADVERTISEMENT "We got the bill that said we had used no water and there was just the sort of standard monthly charge. And I just thought oh well, they've forgotten to read it or they haven't got around to reading it. And I just made a note that the next bill was gonna be bigger and then the next bill came and once again we'd used no water." Greg contacted Watercare about the issue, who told him his smart metre must not be working. "They said could you take a photo of the metre and then we can send you the proper bill. And I said, well, no, that's not possible because I've had knee surgery. I can't get down to take a photo." He was then told the water supplier could send someone out to take the photo for him, but it would cost $35. He said he was yet to receive the correct bill but had been told they would now be reading his meter manually. Kyle was on to his second smart meter after the first one stopped sending signal a few months ago. But he told Checkpoint his water bills were now coming in much higher than he would expect. "Our water bill on average was about $100 or $120 a month and then it jumped to about $200 and I'm like 'yeah, no, that doesn't seem quite right'. ADVERTISEMENT "[Watercare] were basing it on estimates from the previous water bill, which would have been around summer, and me being a gardener, I obviously used a bit more water." Kyle said Watercare made no effort to contact him about the issue, and it was him who raised it with the agency. He said they came back to him and told him his meter had temporarily stopped communicating. "They used the word temporary, but if it was temporary, then why are they replacing it?" He said he was still waiting to have the issue resolved. "I disputed it initially. Sent them a photo of the meter, heard nothing back for them... then I sent them the photo and said, 'hey, can I please get a bill amended?' They said it would take three to five working days and I'm still waiting for it." Watercare's head of retail operations Evan James said the fault means the meter eventually stops sending data but keeps recording water use. ADVERTISEMENT Watercare stopped installing that particular model and started returning affected meters to manual reading, leading to ''catch up'' bills that are higher than previous months. He said Watercare sincerely apologised for the inconvenience and it was offering payment options to help ease the impact. Utilities Disputes told Checkpoint they would expect Watercare to inform customers if it was aware of issues with meters, and explore the options, like letting customers know they can self-report their use to avoid significant back bills. Watercare has around 500,000 meters and of these, around 70,000 are smart meters.

Touching request at funeral for man who died after disappearing on stag do

Greg Monks, 38, died after becoming separated from friends on a stag do in Portugal - his family made a touching request for loved ones who attended his funeral A grieving family made a touching request at the funeral of a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal. Loved ones turned out for an emotional service yesterday to mark the life of Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, who vanished just hours after arriving with friends at the party resort of Albufeira in the Algarve. The 38-year-old had been missing for a week before Portuguese authorities discovered his body at the bottom of a ravine on June 4. Police believe Greg became lost while trying to find his way back to his hotel, and tragically fell to his death. ‌ ‌ After flying over for the week-long search, his mum, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, were forced to return home as they waited for his body to be flown back, reports the Daily Record. Yesterday, family and friends gathered at Daldowie Crematorium's West Chapel near Glasgow to say their goodbyes. The service was also live-streamed online for those unable to attend in person. Instead of bringing flowers, mourners were asked by the family to donate to children's charity Cash for Kids. A number of attendees spoke after the service, and Sharon Cooke said: "A truly beautiful service, you did Greg proud. All the love in the world to you all." Kelly Ann added: "The service was absolutely beautiful. His friends and family did him very proud. Rest in peace now Greg." A balloon release took place on Monday at Fullarton Park in Glasgow, where attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg. Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, said losing her brother had been "torture" for the family – but said they were grateful for some sense of closure. ‌ She said: "It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. "We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send-off he deserves." Greg died after becoming separated from his friends - and Jillian has now urged groups of friends heading abroad to look after one another and stay together. She said: "In places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. 'Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home.'
