Popular Big Ten podcast releases wild record prediction for Spartans this season

USA Today3 days ago
Do you think Michigan State football will lose its season-opener to in-state foe Western Michigan? Do you think that's even possible to happen? Well, there's at least one popular Big Ten podcast host who believes it's going to happen.
Jon "JR" Rhoades of The Big Ten Huddle released his complete record predictions for every school in the Big Ten this week, and his thoughts for the Spartans were quite surprising. If not, outright wild...
Rhoades has the Spartans going 5-7 overall on the year, which in itself isn't jarring or surprising to see. Michigan State has a win total over/under of 5.5 at many sports books so a 5-7 record is certainly in the realm and a common pick for the Spartans this year. But what stood out as wild to me is the fact that he has Michigan State going 5-7 overall with a 4-5 mark in conference play.
For those that don't have the Spartans' schedule memorized or handy, Michigan State will play Western Michigan, Boston College and Youngstown State at home in non-conference play. This would mean, that Rhoades is predicting the Spartans to drop two of those three games -- which I'm assuming would be to Western Michigan and Boston College to open the season 0-2. Michigan State is currently an 18.5-point favorite over the Broncos on FanDuel for some perspective of how the betting experts expect the season-opener to play out.
Maybe Rhoades didn't look at the Michigan State schedule before putting out this prediction or maybe he's very high on the Broncos entering this season. I even suppose he could be leaning towards an even more massive upset with the Penguins of Youngstown State coming into Spartan Stadium and shocking the world as a FCS school beating a Big Ten squad. Whatever may be the reasoning for this record, I personally will be ready to fire up the Jonathan Smith hot seat chatter if Michigan State were to go 1-2 in non-conference play this season. That isn't even something I'm personally considering in play -- which maybe isn't fair to Western Michigan or Youngstown State.
Hopefully, Rhoades is completely wrong with this prediction and we don't see a massive upset to start the season on August 29. If he's right, though, then we are in for a very, very long season...

'I'm from here': Why IU freshman Trent Sisley stayed with Indiana basketball

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball freshman Trent Sisley gave coach Darian DeVries an immediate win on the recruiting trail. Sisley, the 80th ranked overall recruit in the 2025 signing class, posted on social media he was sticking with his pledge to the Hoosiers in March less than an hour after the school announced DeVries as the basketball team's new coach. Indiana's coaching change would have allowed the 4-star forward to freely explore his options in the transfer portal — he signed a letter of intent in November — but ended up as the lone holdover from the Mike Woodson-era. The Santa Claus native credited a series of conversations he had with IU athletic director Scott Dolson and a timely chat with DeVries for making that decision to stick with the Hoosiers an easy one. 'I think it's the best decision I could have made,' Sisley told The Herald-Times after a recent practice. More: Indiana basketball: Two players sidelined with injuries ahead of Puerto Rico trip Re-live Indiana football's memorable run to the College Football Playoff with our commemorative book Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson stepped in to fill the void with the basketball team's coaching staff in limbo. Woodson announced he was stepping down at the end of the 2024-25 season in early February. Dolson kept in contact with Sisley and his parents, while Woodson closed out the year and the program's coaching search ramped up once IU was eliminated from the Big Ten tournament. 'On my recruiting (visits) coming up through high school, (Dolson) always came up to us and introduced himself,' Sisley said. 'I had a pretty good relationship with him before, so it was really good to hear from him that whole time with all the uncertainty.' It wasn't the first time Dolson dished out an assist behind the scenes. He had similar conversations with former Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis in 2021 after Archie Miller was fired. The All-American never hit the portal either. "He knew I wanted to be here,' Sisley said. 'I'm from here, only two hours away, this was somewhere I wanted to be, and he said there would be a lot of positives coming. I trusted him.' More: Will Indiana basketball's recent international signees play in Puerto Rico? What we know. DeVries' actions spoke as loud as his words. He centered their initial conversation on how Sisley's skill set — the freshman is a versatile two-way forward capable of spacing the floor — was a perfect fit for his system. The timing of the call gave it added weight. "He reached out super quick, 30 or 40 minutes (after) it came out online,' Sisley said. 'It was very cool to have that so quick, it was great." DeVries also ran through his résumé on the call, but it wasn't necessary. Sisley knew about DeVries' success at Drake — his older brother Blake played in the Missouri Valley Conference at Evansville in 2021-22 while DeVries was coaching the Bulldogs — and the turnaround he orchestrated at West Virginia's last season. "I follow college basketball pretty deeply,' Sisley said, with a smile. The phone call laid the building blocks for the strong relationship that's developed between the two since Sisley arrived on campus at the start of the summer. 'He said he wanted me on board,' Sisley said. ' I said I wanted to be on board that same phone call.'

Olu Fashanu's impact still felt on Penn State offensive line

At Big Ten Media Day, James Franklin made it a point to bring up Olu Fashanu, even though he's no longer on campus. That should tell you everything you need to know about the kind of impact the former All-American left behind. Fashanu is now with the New York Jets after being taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but according to Franklin, his influence inside the Penn State locker room hasn't faded. Not even a little. Franklin said that Olu's professionalism, preparation habits, and calm but confident leadership left a blueprint that the current offensive line room is still following. Franklin talked about how Olu raised the bar when it came to accountability. He didn't just dominate on the field. He set the tone in meetings, during film, and in practice. Franklin said young guys in that room watched how Olu handled every single rep like it mattered. Now those same younger linemen are veterans themselves, and they are carrying that same mindset. The offensive line has often been the group Penn State fans have questioned the most in recent years. But now? It might be one of the more consistent and mature units on the team. Franklin credited that shift to leaders like Olu, and said that kind of leadership doesn't just disappear when someone leaves for the league. Right now, Penn State returns experience across the line, including interior guys who played key snaps last year. Franklin said these players still reference Olu in film sessions, talk about what he would've done on certain plays, and hold each other to the level he operated at. That kind of impact is rare. He also mentioned that the culture inside the offensive line room is tight. Guys know they are not going to be in the headlines every week, but they take pride in the dirty work. Franklin said that mindset was contagious when Olu was around, and it's still part of the identity now. There is also something to be said about recruiting. Franklin noted that younger linemen wanted to come play at Penn State in part because of Fashanu's story. A guy who stuck with the program, developed over time, didn't chase clout, and still became a first-round pick. That speaks volumes about what the staff is building in the trenches. Dolphins sign former Texas A&M star to bolster OL after Austin Jackson injury

NFL roster moves continue as former Texas A&M offensive lineman Germain Ifedi signs with the Miami Dolphins for his ninth season and fifth team. Ifedi, a first-round pick by the Seahawks in 2016, has since played for the Bears, Falcons, Lions, and Browns. Known for his versatility along the offensive line, he's logged over 80 career starts and provides dependable depth in both guard and tackle positions. His durability and veteran experience make him a valuable midseason addition, especially for teams seeking protection stability and injury insurance. Miami, looking to reinforce its front around quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, gains an adaptable lineman capable of contributing immediately. Ifedi's return to the AFC signals confidence in his continued impact and conditioning. For the Texas native and former Aggie, it's another opportunity to extend a steady and well-traveled NFL career that shows no signs of slowing down.
