Michigan State hockey commit Dryden Allen signs deal with Flint Firebirds
Michigan State hockey received the commitment of Dryden Allen all the way back in August of 2023. The 2007-born defenseman has kept his pledge to the Spartans through the years and is nearing his arrival to East Lasning. Allen, a 6-foot-1, 190 pound left shot defenseman from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is expected to join the Spartans for the 2026-2027 season. Before that, though, he has found a new home for junior hockey. After playing in the USHL for the Dubuque Fighting Saints last season, and the Niagara Falls Canucks prior to that, he will be heading back to Canadian junior hockey, gaining a roster spot in the Ontario Hockey League. Although playing in a Canadian junior hockey league, Allen will be staying close to his future home, signing a Standard Playing Agreement with the Flint Firebirds. It will be another good year and league for his development prior to being a Spartan after this season. Two former Spartans fail to make the cut at the 2025 Rocket Classic
Two former Michigan State golfers had high hopes for their time at their hometown PGA Tour event, the Rocket Classic, but unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Ryan Brehm, a longtime PGA Tour veteran, and Ashton McCulloch, an amateur on the tour, both failed to make the cut at Detroit's PGA Tour event at the Detroit Golf Club. For Brehm, things were looking promising. After a one-under round on Thursday, he was four-under in his second round on Friday. A terrible finish ensued for Brehm, though, who ended the day even par. McCulloch had a week to forget. A six-over round on Thursday was parlayed with a two-over Friday round, making him eight-over on the tournament. Both former Spartans will not see the weekend in Detroit. MSU football makes top 5 list for 4-star edge rusher Andrew Rogers
Where's home 🏠✈️?? @grimsleyfb @RossMartinNC @RivalsFriedman @RivalsWardlaw @Rivals @AuburnFootball @HokiesFB @LSUfootball @MSU_Football @FSUFootball Michigan State is one of five schools in the running for a big-time edge rusher in the 2027 class. Andrew Rogers of Greensboro, N.C. released his top five schools on Friday, with the Spartans cracking the list. According to a post from Rogers on his social media X account, Michigan State was joined on his top five list by LSU, Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech. Rogers is a four-star edge rusher, with a recruiting rating of 91.97 in 247Sports composite system. He ranks as the No. 27 edge rusher and No. 232 overall prospect in the class. He is also listed as the No. 9 player from North Carolina in the class. Michigan State is one of more than 20 schools to offer Rogers, according to 247Sports. So this is pretty impressive to see Michigan State in the mix among some of the biggest brands in all of college football. We will have to continue to monitor Rogers' recruitment, with hopefully the Spartans coming out on top in this battle for a key 2027 prospect. Spartans rumored to face major Big East opponent in an exhibition game this season
Michigan State basketball is rumored to be lining up a big-time opponent for an exhibition game this upcoming season. Storrs Central -- a UConn NIL marketing partner -- posted on social media on Thursday that Michigan State is expected to play the Huskies in an exhibition game this upcoming fall. There were no other details included on the date or location of the potential big-time exhibition matchup. Michigan State and UConn have been two of the biggest and most successful basketball programs in the modern era. The Huskies have experienced more success recently, of course, with back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024. But Michigan State did get the best of UConn in their last meeting in the third-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in 2021. Michigan State is already set to play a number of college basketball's biggest brands this upcoming season. The Spartans have already announced games against Duke (home), North Carolina (neutral site) and Kentucky (neutral site), and also rumored to play Arkansas (home). So adding this major exhibition game is just another fun wrinkle on the Spartans' 2025-26 schedule. Should this exhibition game occur, it would be a third straight year the Spartans played in a marquee exhibition matchup. In 2023, Michigan State hosted Tennessee in a top 10 battle that also served as a charity event to benefit Maui wildfire relief efforts, and this past season the Spartans traveled to Northern Michigan to play an exhibition against Tom Izzo's alma mater. We will keep our eyes out for any formal announcement or report of this potential exhibition matchup. I'm personally hoping this isn't just a rumor and becomes official soon enough. The 26-year-old penned a contract with the Capital club last month following his departure from Bonnyrigg Rose and hasn't looked back since. The former Stenhousemuir and Falkirk shot-stopper can't wait for the new campaign to kick off in just over a fortnight's time when Championship outfit Queen's Park are the visitors to the Vanloq Community Stadium on Premier Sports Group A duty. A trip to Premiership newcomers Falkirk is also on the cards later next month. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Martin endured a disappointing end to last season that culminated in Rose being relegated to the Lowland League after a 3-1 aggregate defeat to SPFL League Two newcomers, East Kilbride. Spartans manager Dougie Samuel However, he is determined to look forward under the stewardship of Samuel. "Relegation is something you'll always look back on and never be fine with it," he told the Evening News. "You think about if you could have done something differently so it was tough, that's for sure. But you have to look forward because football can turn on you very fast. It was a very enjoyable time at Bonnyrigg, but I hardly got a good run because of my fitness and injury. I need to get back to the place where I can play a lot of games. I hope they can get promoted next season. They're a brilliant club and a very well supported one at that. "I was keen to stay in the SPFL. I want to be challenging myself and playing at a level I know I can do well at. Better players put bigger demands on you so that's what's exciting with Spartans. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "Dougie and I had a really good chat. He's very honest and authentic. He leaves you in no uncertain terms on how he believes football should be played and what he expects from you. But he's also really keen on development. "I've been really impressed so far and I said that to the gaffer after the first week. Everything is so professional. You know in advance what the schedule is and what you're going to cover in a training session. It's explained to you why you're doing the drills and I think that's been one of the main takeaways. But there's some really strong players in the squad, both technically and physically. It's exciting to be a part of so hopefully it can all come together." Martin acknowledged he has a fight on his hands if he is to wrestle the gloves off club stalwart Blair Carswell. He is hoping for some game-time when Ayr United visit on Tuesday in Spartans first pre-season fixture. He said: "The gaffer was very clear that he doesn't believe in having a No.1, in the same way that having a centre forward who is going to play every week. It's just not the reality of football. Blair did really well last season so it's not as if I've joined a club who are leaking goals every game. There is a really strong defence too so there's going to be that competition that will benefit us both. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "Having finished fifth last season, we need to be finishing in the play-offs as a minimum. I think you really bed in with your team-mates when the games start so we're looking forward to getting going against Ayr. The potential of this club is huge and the opportunity is there to really maximise that."
