Orioles make history by turning a 6-0 deficit into a 14-run win against Tampa Bay

BALTIMORE (AP) — No lead is safe this year when the Baltimore Orioles face the Tampa Bay Rays.
Certainly not with seven innings still to play.
On June 18, Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 12-8 after the Orioles had taken an 8-0 lead in the top of the second. Then on Friday night — nine days later — it was the Rays who opened the scoring with six runs in the second. Only for Baltimore to storm back and rout Tampa Bay 22-8.
'I'm proud of our hitters,' Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino said. 'We were on the other side of this not too long ago.'
According to information released by the team from the Elias Sports Bureau, Baltimore became the first team in either the American or National League to win by at least 14 runs after trailing by six.
On a drizzly night at Camden Yards, the Orioles produced an offensive deluge, falling one run shy of the team record since moving to Baltimore. Gunnar Henderson and Gary Sanchez each had four hits and a homer. Colton Cowser doubled three times. He and Ramon Laureano each scored four runs.
With the Orioles down 6-0 in the second, Coby Mayo delivered a two-run double to start the comeback. When he came to the plate in the eighth, Baltimore led 20-8 and the Rays had infielder Jose Caballero pitching. Mayo took him deep for his first career homer to complete the scoring.
'An awesome moment obviously, no matter who it's off of,' Mayo said. 'Really cool thing.'
The last time two teams overcame deficits of at least six runs against each other was in 2023, according to Sportradar. Those two games also involved the Rays and happened in even closer proximity. On May 7 of that year, Tampa Bay trailed 6-0 before beating the New York Yankees 8-7 in 10 innings. On May 13, the Yankees fell behind 6-0 but came back to beat the Rays 9-8.
Baltimore's 14 extra-base hits (nine doubles, a triple and four homers) set a team record since 1954, when the Orioles began playing in Baltimore.
This game came after Tampa Bay allowed one run total in a three-game sweep of Kansas City. And after the Orioles had been no-hit at least into the seventh inning in three of their previous five games.
They had 21 hits in this one.
'It was a lot of fun,' Cowser said. 'That's what this team's capable of, and being able to go out there and have a game like that hopefully continues that motivation and confidence.'

Still, she channeled their knowledge to hone her abilities to excel as a multi-sport athlete, become a state champion and this year's American Press Female Athlete of the Year. 'It's a tough area to be in sometimes because, if I'm not succeeding well, then they know like what I'm doing wrong or what I need to fix,' Portie said. 'It's just tough because they are so hard on me because they know how good I can be, but I really appreciate them. 'I'm glad that they know what they're talking about to help me grow and be better at the sport that I play.' The Sam Houston junior shortstop helped lead the Broncos to their first state championship since 2015. As a powerful 5-foot-10 outside hitter, Portie and the Broncos reached the volleyball semifinals for the first time since 2009. 'It was pretty awesome to do that in both,' Portie said. 'That was definitely a different experience for volleyball because we made it to state my sophomore year, but it was not really anything the same as this past year. 'It was just a great learning experience, and it was just something that I was really looking forward to and that we worked for all season.' Portie's mother, Sarah (Everingham) Portie, was a four-time all-Southland Conference softball infielder (1994, '95, '97, '98) and coached the Barbe High softball program for two decades. Her father, Jarrod Portie, was an all-district baseball and football player at Jennings High School and went on to pitch for McNeese State from 1998 to 2001. He helped lead Jennings to the Class 3A baseball semifinals in 1996 and 1997. 'My dad is my hitting coach,' Portie said. 'I do hit a lot on my own, but there are days that I ask them to hit with me. '(Mom) helps with my hitting, too. She has obviously played it a while and coached it, so she knows the little things. Her being the one who travels with me to all my tournaments, she gives me some pointers and helps me out through it all.' With a brother, Riggins, a year younger than her, Portie said she always had someone to compete against. When she was younger, she played on the same youth baseball team as her brother, and eventually moved to softball. In her second season as a starter on the high school level, Portie was part of one of the most feared lineups in the state. The Broncos combined for 57 home runs and scored 357 runs on their way to the Non-select Division I state championship and a 30-2 record. Portie accounted for 14 of those home runs while batting .519 with eight doubles, two triples, 48 RBIs, 55 runs and 12 stolen bases. She had a .628 on-base percentage with four strikeouts in 81 at-bats. She earned all-district first team, Class 5A all-state honorable mention and American Press All-Southwest Big School honors. 'I had a year underneath my belt,' Portie said. 'I knew what I was going into, so it wasn't anything really new to me.' In junior high, she added three sports, including volleyball. 'I just grew up in the world of softball because of my parents,' Portie said. 'My dad played baseball, so I just grew up around that sport. But volleyball was just a random thing. 'One day, going into middle school, I was like, 'I think I want to try out for volleyball.' I didn't even know how many people were on the court at a time or any of the rules, but I made the team and started playing volleyball since then.' On the volleyball court, Portie earned co-district MVP honors and played in the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association Top 100 Player Showcase for a second consecutive season. She was ninth in the state with 466 kills in addition to 80 blocks 68 aces, 505 digs and 59 assists for the 39-7 Broncos. 'I did a lot of extra work,' Portie said. 'I did a lot of jump training with Barry Painter, and I feel like that has helped me grow as an athlete. 'My freshman year, I was not 5-10. I was definitely more like 5-5, 5-8, so just growing a couple of extra inches and learning your body. I would just say that I was more aware and just an overall better athlete.'

Justin Tucker had a decision to make. Will it help him return to the field?
Justin Tucker didn't issue an apology Thursday or acknowledge any wrongdoing after the NFL suspended him 10 weeks for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Instead, in a statement released by his longtime agent, Rob Roche, the former Baltimore Ravens kicker stood by his previous denials and said he's disappointed with the league's decision. The statement also made clear that he will not appeal the decision 'in order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible.' Advertisement Thursday's ruling by the NFL came after a four-month investigation following allegations from 16 Baltimore-area massage therapists via The Baltimore Banner that Tucker engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior during bodywork sessions from 2012 to 2016. Tucker has not faced criminal or civil charges, and the statute of limitations in Maryland makes either scenario highly unlikely. The most accurate kicker in NFL history was released by the Ravens in early May after starring for the team for more than a decade. Then came the ruling and a decision to be made. If he and his high-powered legal team had made it known they planned on fighting it, his status likely would have gone unresolved for months. The matter would have likely landed in the hands of Judge Sue Lewis Robinson, the hearing officer for alleged violations of the personal conduct policy. She would have been charged with making a ruling and then releasing the findings of the investigation. That process would have surely taken a lot more time and would have opened the door for a suspension longer than the 10-week ban Tucker accepted. 'We have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter,' Roche said in the statement. 'The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband and friend.' Attorneys Michael Belsky and Catherine Dickinson, who are representing 13 of Tucker's accusers, praised the league's investigation, calling it 'incredibly thorough and thoughtful.' Dickinson said the league interviewed 15 of the accusers. Yet, Belsky said Friday at a news conference at the SBWD Law office, which is just down the street from the Ravens' M&T Bank Stadium, that Tucker's refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing left 'many of the victims, our clients, with the stain of a denial.' Advertisement 'There was an opening here for an early discussion between Mr. Tucker and the victims and the NFL,' Belsky said. 'There was a way that this could have happened and gone down in a way that was different than how it did. Unfortunately, Mr. Tucker dug in with his denials, and we are where we are today.' Belsky was asked what's next for his clients and said they were still digesting the results of the investigation, and any responding course of action was 'TBD.' Meanwhile, as a free agent, Tucker is free to sign with another team. He can participate in training camp and even kick in the preseason. However, he would officially revert to the reserve/suspended list on Aug. 26, roster cutdown day around the NFL. He wouldn't be eligible for reinstatement until Nov. 11, two days before the official start of Week 11 and 10 days before his 36th birthday. Bringing Tucker into a training camp would surely generate questions and criticism for an organization and probably be a distraction that football decision-makers wouldn't want to deal with in late July. Most teams carry only one kicker. Signing Tucker now so he'll be available in mid-November would be a clear message to a team's current kicker that he almost certainly isn't in the long-term plans. The most recent version of Tucker as a kicker was a diminished one from the ridiculously high standard he set early in his career. Tucker had his worst NFL season in 2024, missing eight field goal attempts and two extra-point tries. The Ravens stuck with him, and he had a strong finish to the season. But for the only time in his career, Tucker was one of the primary reasons Baltimore lost a few of its games, rather than being the prominent reason for winning. His 73.3 field goal percentage was fourth worst among kickers who were active for more than 10 games. Advertisement But what if a contending team with an established and well-respected general manager and head coach enters the second half of the season with major questions at one of the game's most important positions? Year after year, in a league where the margin of victory and defeat is so small, promising seasons are sometimes made or lost on the foot of kickers. Would a team view Tucker, a seven-time Pro Bowler, as the final piece to a championship puzzle? Would an established GM be willing to absorb the heat if he felt Tucker would help his team win games in December and January? By not appealing, Tucker left that door ajar.
