Kota Kinabalu: Schools in Sabah must never cover up incidents of bullying, said State Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin bin Mohd Arif, who is also in charge of Sabah's education matters. 'This is the official stance of the Ministry of Education. It is neither appropriate nor acceptable to hide what occurs in any school, particularly when it concerns the welfare and safety of students,' he said, after visiting Noraidah Lamat, the mother of Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student of Sekolah Menengah Agama (SMA) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan, Papar, on Monday. Dr Mohd Arifin said this amid public calls for transparency in the investigations and social media claims of parents pulling out their kids from the school after the incident. Dr Mohd Arifin who visited Zara with Director-General of Education at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 17, reiterated the State's commitment to fully support the authorities in investigating the death. 'Let's allow the investigation to take its course. We must wait for the outcome of the thorough official findings,' he said. 'Hulkamania,' as the energy he created was called, started running wild in the mid-1980s and pushed professional wrestling into the mainstream. Diving instructor arrested over assault, threat in Semporna

The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement during a dive trip to Pulau Timba-Timba on Tuesday when a gas tank belonging to the victim accidentally fell and injured the 38-year-old suspect's foot. The next day, the suspect, after receiving medical treatment in Tawau, returned to the tour company's premises to confront the victim and allegedly demanded compensation. During the confrontation, an argument broke out, and the suspect is accused of physically assaulting and threatening to injure the victim. No compromise on student safety negligence says deputy minister
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will not tolerate any negligence that compromises student safety, particularly for those with special educational needs, said Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh. He emphasised that the 2023 incident, where a special needs student was injured, must serve as a crucial reminder of the collective responsibility to maintain safe school environments. 'The Ministry of Education (MOE) strongly emphasises instilling good manners and moral values among students. All educational institutions must strictly follow the Special Circular (SPI) on standard operating procedures (SOPs), including incident reporting and safety protocols for physical education and co-curricular activities,' he said. Wong added that schools should conduct systematic risk assessments for all activities and enhance civic education programmes to nurture empathy and compassion among students. He made these remarks during a Special Chamber session in the Dewan Rakyat today, responding to a question from Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) regarding the government's stance on the October 2023 incident. Wong reiterated MOE's commitment to ensuring the well-being of all students, regardless of background, and prioritising a safe and inclusive school environment. Regarding the specific case, he stated that the ministry had taken immediate and long-term measures, including psychological and counselling support for the affected student and family. 'Investigations by the Selangor Education Department and district education office determined that the incident was accidental, with no professional negligence or misconduct warranting disciplinary action,' he said. However, he noted that the case is currently before the Shah Alam High Court, and MOE will cooperate fully with the judicial process. - Bernama
