Legend already? Pant on path of overtaking Dhoni as Asias best wicketkeeper-batter in SENA conditions
Since his Test debut in 2018, there have been several words that have defined Pant's game, especially in overseas conditions. counter-attacking, bold, audacious, stubborn, risky, foolish, match-turning, etc. It could leave fans and opponents stunned for a second and then, fuming at him the very next second, because of a rash shot that landed in a fielder's hands somewhere. But one thing is for sure: Pant in Test cricket is a blockbuster act, both for his unpredictability and intelligent crisis management.
The fact that four out of his six centuries have come in SENA conditions speaks volumes about his adaptability in tough situations. During his past tours to Australia and England, fans have seen him knock around a few deliveries for singles and doubles to assess the pitch and then put his 'Spidey' suit on to perform batting acrobatics like no others. Pant falling on the ground while attempting a shot, the bat slipping out of his hand while taking the aerial route, or him unleashing a one-handed sixer, one can never predict what is coming next.
One more century during this England tour, starting from Friday, will witness him score his fifth century in SENA conditions, the most by an Asian batter. One each has come in South Africa, two in England, and one in Australia.
Also, another century will take his Test century count to seven, the most by an Indian batter, surpassing MS Dhoni's tally of six tons.
Currently in SENA, Pant has scored 1,681 runs in 26 Tests and 48 innings at an average of 37.35, with four centuries and five fifties. A half-century is all he needs to become the top run-getter among all Asians in SENA conditions, overtaking Dhoni, who has scored 1,731 runs in 32 matches and 60 innings at an average of 31.47, with 13 half-centuries.
With a 24-year-old Dhruv Jurel hot on his heels with consistent performances for India A, it is extremely important that Pant has a fine series in England. While a player of Pant's calibre cannot be dropped so easily, he did have an underwhelming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, with 255 runs in nine innings at an average of 28.33 and just one fifty. Washington Freedom crush Seattle Orcas to go second on MLC table
ANI Published 5 Jul 2025, 11:40 AM IST Florida [US], July 5 (ANI): Shimron Hetmyer had been the hero for Seattle Orcas in their last three games, but this time he couldn't save his team. With Hetmyer having an off day, the Orcas' batting collapsed again, managing just 82 runs. Washington Freedom made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 9.2 overs to move up to second place on the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 points table, as per ESPNcricinfo. Freedom won the toss and chose to bowl first. They made an instant impact. Saurabh Netravalkar took a wicket with the very first ball, removing Shayan Jahangir. In the next over, Glenn Maxwell dismissed Aaron Jones. Netravalkar struck again in the third, sending Sikandar Raza back, and Maxwell picked up two more in the powerplay, Steven Taylor and Kyle Mayers leaving Orcas reeling at 21/5 after six overs. Maxwell finished with impressive figures of 3/12 runs in four overs. Netravalkar also ended with 3/13, getting his third in the 16th over. Jack Edwards chipped in too, picking up 3/19, including the key wicket of Heinrich Klaasen, who was the only Orcas batter to fight back with 48 runs from 39 balls before being the last man out. In response, Freedom had a smooth chase. Although Raza removed Mitchell Owen in the third over, Rachin Ravindra and Mukhtar Ahmed put together a solid stand. By the end of the powerplay, they had already scored 50/1, needing only 37 more runs from the remaining 14 overs. They got the job done in just over 3 more overs. Ravindra scored 32 off 23 balls before getting out, while Mukhtar remained unbeaten on 36 from 21 deliveries. Despite this heavy loss, the Orcas are still in the race for the playoffs thanks to their earlier three-game winning streak. They remain in fourth place with nine games played. MI New York, currently fifth, are just one win behind with a game in hand. (ANI)

Sanju Samson becomes most expensive player in Kerala Cricket League auction, signed by Kochi Blue Tigers for Rs 26.8 lakh
Kerala star Sanju Samson will make his first appearance in the Kerala Cricket League's upcoming second edition after being signed up for Rs 26.60 lakh by Kochi Blue Tigers, making him the most expensive player signing in the league. Samson, who had been listed at a base price of Rs 3 lakh, saw exponential jumps to Rs 5 lakh and 10 lakh in a matter of moments before the intense bidding war ended with a record signing by Kochi, who spent more than half of their INR 50 lakh purse on the India wicket-keeper's signing. This will be Samson's first major appearance in a tournament overseen by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) since being controversially dropped from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad in December 2024 after failing to turn up for a preparatory camp held in Wayanad. Kerala eventually went onto reach the Ranji Trophy final for the first time in their history, finishing runners-up behind Vidarbha. Last year, Samson opted for a break from the inaugural edition of the league despite being announced as its brand ambassador to prioritise his international commitments. 'Sanju has been playing non-stop cricket from March till July. Two months of IPL plus T20 World Cup have been taxing. Even after the T20 World Cup, he was part of the Indian T20 teams which toured Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Hence Sanju asked the KCA (Kerala Cricket Association) officials for a break. His name was not listed in the player auction too,' KCA sources had informed. Samson then went onto dominate in the opening spot for India in T20Is, scoring three hundreds in four innings against Bangladesh and South Africa, making him the first batter to record three T20I centuries in a calendar year. Samson last featured in the IPL 2025 season with the Rajasthan Royals, scoring 285 runs in nine innings.

Super Mohammed Siraj steps up and becomes India's pace leader in Bumrah's absence
"I love responsibility, I love the challenge."These were the words of Mohammed Siraj when asked how he felt about being leader of the Indian pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah during the Edgbaston Test. For a long time, Siraj and Bumrah has worked in tandem but it was always the latter who took home the plaudits for his work. Siraj had flashing moments of brilliance here and there but he was yet to show that he could be a leader of the side on his was until the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. The pacer, who has cut a polarising figure over the past few months after an uninspiring Australian tour. We all know how the story went from then till the England tour as the pacer found himself dropped from the Champions Trophy before a phenomenal IPL campaign saw him comeback. ENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 3 HighlightsYet, the first Test was a dose of reality for Siraj in the unforgiving conditions of England. He bowled well in patches, but many felt there was a lot more he could have done at Headingley. Then came Edgbaston and Bumrah was rested. Siraj is expected to remain one of the first names on the team sheet given Bumrah's workload management but he needed to prove that's exactly what he did early on Day three when he dismissed Joe Root and then produced a vicious delivery to dismiss Ben Stokes. The match then almost went out of India's hands after Harry Brook and Jamie Smith put on a 303-run stand before the new ball came in to Deep opened the door and Siraj ran through the tail and ended with figures of 6 for 70, something he was proud of."It's unbelievable because I was waiting for a long time. I have been bowling well but not getting wickets. I have only got four-wicket hauls here, so getting six here is very special," said Siraj. Courtesy: AP The man with a planComing into the second Test, it seemed like Siraj did have a plan. The Indian bowlers were wayward and the plans didn't seem to work out at all. This made questions come up about Siraj and Co. especially with Bumrah being out of the Siraj used his experience well and came up with a better plan for the England batters this time around. His line was more or less at the stumps, constantly asking questions of the batters. Sunil Gavaskar pointed to this saying the pacer was a man with a certainly does because obviously questions being asked after England won the test match chasing 370 in the fourth innings, so clearly a question being asked of the Indian bowlers. And Siraj in particular. And that was a very, very good bouncer to dismiss Stokes. And that's exactly what you want.""A bouncer's got to be a real effort ball. It can't be that you're banging it in halfway down without it actually coming up. That was a super bouncer. And, yes, I think he's looking to prove a point or two. He's bowled well, didn't get wickets yesterday, but today, look at the way, I mean, he's got Joe Root with a little bit of luck. That's how the game goes. You bowl a good ball, you don't get a wicket. You get catches dropped off your bowling or you don't get LBW decisions going your way, marginal decisions. So yes, sometimes you need luck, but that wicket of Ben Stokes was a superb delivery," said trying too much, sticking to the strengthsAs a leader in the side, Siraj's job this time was not to experiment a lot and stick to his strengths and that's what exactly happened. He has always been someone who is good when he is bringing the ball into the right-handers and he did exactly the same and stuck to the a slow wicket, with not a lot on offer, Siraj's mantra was to bowl in the right areas and with discipline."The wicket was very slow but when you are given a responsibility to lead the attack, my aim was to not try too much and just bowl in the right areas and bowl with discipline. My mindset was to keep it tight and not give away runs," he the game is far from done and so is the series, Siraj's performance does come at the right time for the Indian team who will be aiming to secure the win and make it 1-1.- EndsTune InMust Watch
