Tetteh: Upcoming roadmap to be based on Libyans' views to end transitional phases

The UN envoy to Libya Hanna Tetteh said that the anticipated roadmap will be based on input gathered from Libyans through in-person meetings, open calls, and online surveys.
During a virtual meeting with a group of Libyans, Tetteh emphasized that this data will form the technical and political foundation for the new roadmap, which will be presented to the UN Security Council on August 20 and 21.
Tetteh clarified that the UN mission is not seeking to prolong the transitional phases but is working toward a stable phase through elections based on a clear and enforceable legal framework. She noted that the advisory committee has recommended separating the presidential and parliamentary elections.
On Thursday, the UN mission announced that the 6+6 Committee and the advisory committee had reached an agreement on the need to amend Libya's constitutional and legal framework in order to facilitate widely accepted presidential and parliamentary elections.
At the end of a two-day consultative meeting sponsored by the UN mission, both committees affirmed that amending the constitutional declaration and reviewing electoral laws are essential steps toward achieving a comprehensive political settlement. This, they said, also requires the formation of a unified government with a clear electoral mandate and local and international guarantees to rebuild trust between the people and political institutions. UN envoy concludes Rome visit with talk on Libya's political situation

The United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya, and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, has concluded a two-day official visit to the Italian capital, Rome, where she held high-level consultations with senior officials from Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister's Office. According to a statement released by UNSMIL on Sunday, Tetteh discussed the latest political, economic, and security developments in Libya, underlining the importance of continued partnership between the United Nations and Italy in supporting stability efforts in the country. The UN envoy expressed her deep appreciation for Italy's ongoing support to the mission and to broader international efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Libya. She also highlighted her anticipation of continued cooperation and joint efforts with Italian counterparts. At the conclusion of her visit, Tetteh reaffirmed the mission's commitment to pursuing a realistic and inclusive approach to shaping and implementing a political roadmap for Libya — one aimed at increasing the chances of reaching a comprehensive and lasting solution to the crisis. UN refugee chief warns of rising migration from Libya amid funding crisis

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has warned of a surge in migration flows from Libya and North Africa to Europe due to severe funding shortages facing the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). In comments to the Financial Times, Grandi said that Sudanese refugees are already moving from Chad into Libya — one of the key transit routes towards Europe. He stressed the urgent need to boost support for host countries to help displaced populations remain in place, which could ease growing pressures on migration corridors. Grandi noted increasing signs that thousands of Sudanese refugees are heading north toward Libya and onward to Europe, instead of staying in Sudan or neighbouring countries such as Chad. He described the current budget cuts affecting UNHCR as 'catastrophic,' warning that the lack of resources is pushing thousands of migrants toward Europe. Grandi urged European capitals to fund existing refugee reception systems in Africa rather than investing in new migration control frameworks. He added that donor-imposed budget reductions are seriously undermining the agency's ability to manage migration flows, calling the international community's neglect of the situation in African nations 'a grave strategic mistake.'
