New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week
Following the record-breaking opening weekend for 'A Minecraft Movie' and the breakout success of Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners,' a new slate of blockbusters and indie films are hoping to drum up excitement in May about what 2025 has to offer in the cinema landscape.
Starting with the weekend's wide releases, Marvel is betting big on 'Thunderbolts' after a series of underwhelming releases with 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'The Marvels.' Starring Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell, the film follows an unconventional team that bands together after being sent on a rogue operative mission. To give 'Thunderbolts*' a different flair, Marvel's marketing has focused on the talent behind the camera that previously worked on A24 projects like 'Beef,' 'Midsommar' and 'A Different Man.'

For moviegoers not quite on the Marvel train, Nicolas Cage stars in the new psychological thriller 'The Surfer' directed by Lorcan Finnegan ('Vivarium' starring Jesse Eisenberg), which premiered at last year's Cannes. After returning to surf with his son at his childhood beach, Cage's character gets humiliated by the locals in 'a trippy slapdash comic nightmare,' Variety's Owen Gleiberman said in his review. So far, the film has an 88% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Beginning Sunday, May 4, 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' will be back in theaters for its 50th anniversary re-release. Over limited release, audiences can check out director Durga Chew-Bose's new take on Françoise Sagan's classic novel 'Bonjour Tristesse,' now starring Chloë Sevigny and Lily McInerny, while the indie neo-noir thriller 'A Desert,' featuring Sarah Lind, Kai Lennox and David Yow, follows a photographer in the American Southwest.

Robert Downey Jr. Supports ‘Ironheart' Star Dominique Thorne Amid Review-Bombing Campaign: ‘We're in This Love Together'
On the day of 'Ironheart's' premiere, Robert Downey Jr. met with star Dominique Thorne over FaceTime to express his support for the actress and series amid a review bombing campaign ahead of the show's release. The show, which premieres Tuesday night on Disney+, has received middling to poor reviews from critics. But it was also hit with hundreds of often identical negative reviews by users who have not seen the show on Rotten Tomatoes, a form of harassment historically deployed against works focused on women, people of color or LGBTQ characters. 'I've grown so fond of you, it's bananas,' Downey said in the video. 'Congratulations. I'll be watching it with the world.' You can watch the video, released on Instagram, below. Downey captioned the post 'Riri and Tony don't follow trends #goodmorningIronheart'. The video, featuring the two actors, went live only hours before the three-episode premiere of 'Ironheart' releases at 6 p.m. PT. At the beginning of the video, Downey points out, 'It's June 24, which is…' Thorne touchingly responds, 'It's dad's birthday' — a reference to Downey's father, Robert Downey Sr. 'God, you've been doing too much press,' Downey jokes. The two then celebrate 'Ironheart's' release. The post shows a touching act of solidarity from Downey, who gave arguably the most notable and popular performance from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his 11-year run as Tony Stark. The actor will return to the franchise next year when he portrays Doctor Doom in 'Avengers: Doomsday' (or possibly this summer if he cameos in 'Fantastic Four: First Steps'). With the unwarranted heat 'Ironheart' has already received, it's a welcome sentiment from the Marvel star. 'Ironheart' marks only Thorne's second appearance as Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart (well, third if we're counting the Disney cruise). The character first appeared in 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' when Namor hunted her for creating a Vibranium detector that led an expedition to his underwater domain. By the end of the film, Williams appears in her first functioning Iron Man suit. Prior to tonight's release of the first half of 'Ironheart,' the series has a 32% audience score despite the fact audiences haven't yet seen the show. Thorne and 'Ironheart' have consistently faced online attacks, as has become common in recent MCU films and series starring women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ community. 'Ironheart' received a truncated marketing campaign, with the first trailer releasing less than a month and a half before the series began streaming. In Marvel comics, the superhero debuted in 'Invincible Iron Man (2016) #7' and soon took over as Iron Man following Tony Stark's apparent death in 'Civil War II.' This was a period of time when many Marvel heroes were being replaced or working alongside younger legacy characters ascending to the mantle. Riri Williams faced harsher criticism than most. Williams views Stark as a mentor, speaking to an A.I. version of his consciousness following the events of 'Civil War II.' This adds a touching parallel to Downey's message, as the two characters have no formal relationship in the MCU. With the amount of unwarranted hate Thorne has received, Downey's video is a nice reminder that one of the world's biggest movie stars remains in her corner. This iconic slasher movie is leaving Netflix — I'm not missing out and neither should you
Between the "Scream" franchise, "The Blair Witch Project"-induced "found footage" phenomenon and M. Night Shyamalan mind-benders like "The Sixth Sense" and Oscar-winning thrillers like "Silence of the Lambs," the 1990s were a great time for horror. One of the most crowd-pleasing (if not exactly critically acclaimed) titles in the slasher genre is "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which sees an iconic foursome of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe battle a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town. The movie comes from director Jim Gillespie and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, the latter of whom recently tapped into the "murderous coastal town" genre yet again with his new Netflix show "The Waterfront." And, as is always the case with the platform's ever-changing library, you now only have a few days left to catch the '90s horror favorite on Netflix before it departs the streamer on July 1. With "IKWYDLS" officially getting a present-day reboot scheduled for theatrical release on July 18, it's high time to revisit the jump-scare original. Here's why you should add "I Know What You Did Last Summer" to your watch list this weekend. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" centers on four teenage friends who accidentally hit a pedestrian following a beach trip to celebrate July 4. They don't alert the authorities and instead dispose the body, vowing to never discuss the horrible incident again. However, a year later, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), receives a letter revealing that someone else was on the road that night and knows exactly what they did. Seeking revenge, a hook-wielding killer fisherman begins haunting the four friends throughout their town of Southport, North Carolina, set on taking out the kiddos one by bloody one. Again, the original "I Know What You Did Last Summer" wasn't exactly an immediate hit with professional critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, where the film holds an approval rating of 48%, the critical consensus reads: "A by-the-numbers slasher that arrived a decade too late, the mostly tedious 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' will likely only hook diehard fans of the genre." However, some critics were more charmed by the horror flick, which, along with "Scream" a year earlier, helped revive the slasher genre. Derek Elley of Variety called it a "polished genre piece with superior fright elements that should perform at better-than-average theatrical levels," while Richard Harrington of The Washington Post dubbed it "a smart and sharply-drawn genre film with a moral center, and with a solid cast of young actors to hold it." In the decades since its release, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" has endured among horror fans (and been the subject of many a funny parody) thanks to its very nineties-ness, from those Williamson-penned precocious teens to the megawatt '90s names playing them ("Party of Five" star Jennifer Love Hewitt, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" icon Sarah Michelle Gellar.)
