Kabir Khan feels people going from 'why Kartik Aaryan' to 'he deserves National Award' for Chandu Champion validates him
Kabir Khan's Chandu Champion completes one year of release today. The filmmaker brought to life the phoenix-like journey of Paralympic champion and war hero Murlikant Petkar in the acclaimed biopic. Kartik Aaryan, who played Petkar, walked away with a lot of plaudits as well, with his performance being called one of the best of his career. In an exclusive chat with HT, the filmmaker recalls how people had initially doubted Kartik's casting when the film was announced, and how everyone's opinion changed after the release.
Chandu Champion continues to win laurels even a year after its release, with Kartik himself bagging four Best Actor awards. A proud Kabir says, "I am really glad that the really incredible journey that Kartik had is being recognised. It validates my belief in him."
Reflecting on the journey of the film from its inception to the eventual reception, Kabir says, "I would always be questioned. People would ask me, 'Why do you want Kartik?' But in my entire career, I have always enjoyed doing that - putting people into roles they have never done before. People questioned me casting Katrina Kaif for New York, saying there are no songs and dances and whatnot. They wondered why I was doing Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Salman right after giving a huge action hit in Ek Tha Tiger. And people were not convinced by Ranveer's casting for 83. But in the end, they all worked. It's a director's intuition, maybe."
But despite the doubts that people around him had, Kabir says he was steadfast in his belief in his lead actor. "It wasn't an overnight decision, but made over a series of meetings. I had seen very little of his work, but I liked the boyish innocence in him and his attitude. That worked for this role. And then he threw himself into prep for over a year," he explains.
Kabir says he has heard the chatter around a National Film Award win for Kartik for Chandu Champion, which initially started with fan clubs online and is gaining traction now. "If not this performance, then what?" he says matter-of-factly, adding, "It's the portrayal of a man that genuinely moved every person who saw this film. And I am not saying it because it's my film. But genuinely, anyone who watched Chandu Champion was moved to tears by it. I continue getting messages from people who keep discovering this film, saying, 'Oh my God! We had no idea that Kartik had this in him.' At the end of the day, if the National Award is for a performance that moved the whole country and brought this great hero back to the national consciousness, then he is definitely a serious contender."
Chandu Champion also starred Bhuvan Arora, Vijay Raaz, Yashpal Sharma, Rajpal Yadav, Aniruddh Dave, Shreyas Talpade, and Sonali Kulkarni. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Lauren Sánchez becomes 'Mrs. Bezos' on Instagram, wipes profile clean after lavish Venice wedding to Amazon founder
Lauren Sánchez has officially embraced her new identity as 'Mrs. Bezos' — both in matrimony and online. In a symbolic digital move, the former journalist and TV host changed her Instagram handle to 'Lauren Sánchez Bezos' and deleted all previous posts, leaving only a single wedding photograph from her extravagant celebration with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Another picture was a snap of her in her beautiful Dolce & Gabbana wedding dress. Lauren Sanchez has changed her name on Instagram and wiped her handle clean. The couple tied the knot during a grand, multi-day affair in Venice, Italy, on June 27, hosted on the idyllic island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The remaining photo on Sánchez's Instagram captures the newlyweds hand-in-hand, beaming beneath a grove of trees, surrounded by applauding guests. Sánchez wore a striking lace corseted Dolce & Gabbana gown with a mermaid silhouette and a traditional embroidered veil. Bezos opted for a classic black tuxedo and bow tie. The Instagram reset appears to be part of a broader rebranding — a public declaration of her new status and identity, now closely aligned with one of the world's most powerful tech moguls. Sources close to the couple confirmed they had already legally married in the United States before their Italian celebration, having signed a multimillion-dollar prenuptial agreement. Italian officials have also stated the pair made no formal request to legalise their marriage in Venice, where foreign weddings often require extra documentation and legal steps to be valid under US law. The Venetian nuptials drew a constellation of celebrities and power players, with attendees including Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, and members of both the Kardashian and Trump families. By deleting her social media history and adopting her new name, Sánchez signals a new chapter in a very public partnership — one that merges media presence, high society, and billionaire influence.

Mark Bezos, the younger half-brother of Jeff Bezos, and his wife Lisa Bezos attended the Amazon's founder's groom's party in Venice. As Mark attended the wedding in black tux, he resembled a Hollywood star. Mark Bezos with his wife Lisa Bezos at the wedding of Jeff Bezos in Venice. (Image: AFP via Getty Images) He is said to be lookalikes of Bruce Willis and even Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, who starred in Moana and Jumanji. While Mark isn't a Hollywood celebrity, he has been rubbing elbows with a handful of the celebrities and wealthy who made their way to Venice to witness the wedding. Mark is a businessman like his elder half-brother, but he avoids the limelight and prefers to work more behind the scenes. In 1996, Mark decided to assist his elder brother Jeff and his firm, Amazon, continuing some of his family's traditions. Bloomberg reported that he purchased 30,000 Amazon shares for $10,000 that year, joining sister Christina. It is estimated that they would have been valued $640 million in 2018 if they had opted to keep the shares. Mark, who is also known for charities, works as a director of Robin Hood, an esteemed anti-poverty group in New York City. In addition to his charitable work, he co-founded the consumer brand-focused private equity business HighPost Capital. Dressed in a stunning custom Dolce & Gabbana lace gown, Sanchez beamed in a photo she shared on Instagram shortly after the ceremony, standing arm-in-arm with Bezos, who wore a classic black tuxedo. The couple and their guests began arriving earlier in the week aboard private planes and luxurious yachts, creating a frenzy of celebrity sightings across the city's iconic canals. Guests were treated to high-end events, gourmet dining, and live performances, including a romantic appearance by Matteo Bocelli, son of world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli. Cheers echoed across the Venetian lagoon on Friday evening as the ceremony concluded, followed by private parties behind tightly guarded doors. Among the guests spotted: Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, Barry Diller, Usher, Jewel, Tom Brady, Bill Gates, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The gathering blended Hollywood glitz, tech titans, and global elites—all under one carefully curated guest list. A wedding worth tens of millions Source: Instagram/@laurensanchezbezos Pulling off such an extravagant affair in Venice came with serious logistical challenges and a staggering price tag. Veneto Governor Luca Zaia estimated the total cost of the celebration at €40–48 million (up to $56 million), which is more than 1,000 times the $36,000 average wedding cost for American couples in 2025, according to Zola's wedding report. Hosting a wedding in Venice, where every flower arrangement, sound system, and glass of champagne must be transported by boat, significantly increases costs. 'There's very tight control, especially on movement there with boats,' said Jack Ezon, CEO of luxury travel firm Embark Beyond, in a quote to AP. 'It at least triples the cost versus staging the same soiree in Rome or Florence.' Despite the challenges, the event was executed with flawless precision, turning Venice into a floating stage of love, wealth, and spectacle.
