Malaysia to attend Asean e-commerce conference on digital trade
Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the conference is crucial to address cross-border trade issues, as both consumers and sellers in the digital marketplace often operate from different countries.
"It's important for us to reach a mutual understanding on how to protect the e-commerce ecosystem, not only to safeguard consumers but also sellers.
"In the absence of regulations or an act that covers the entire Asean region, self-regulation becomes essential.
"These are some of the matters that will be discussed during the Asean e-commerce conference," she said.
She added that millions of businesses are now involved in e-commerce, and platform owners must ensure integrity and proper use of their platforms.
"Since e-commerce laws have yet to be tabled in Parliament, we advise platforms to practice self-regulation and uphold good practices to protect consumers," she said after the closing ceremony of the TikTok Shop Summit today.

Ministry aims to expand access for Sara recipients
RANAU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will collaborate with the Finance Ministry to expand access to essential items for recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid. Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the ministry had proposed that recipients be allowed to use their Sara aid at mobile Jualan Rahmah Madani Programme (PJRM) locations, in addition to existing participating retailers. He said at present, Sara aid recipients could only purchase basic items at 4,152 participating supermarkets and retail outlets nationwide, including 470 in Sabah. "This will enable Sara recipients to use the aid credited to their MyKad to make purchases at mobile PJRM locations," he said after launching the Sabah Zone Carnival 2025 here on Saturday. Armizan said the additional RM300 million PJRM allocation would enable the ministry to increase its frequency, with a target of 20,000 this year. "For Sabah, the ministry is targeting 2,276 PJRM series this year, with 1,089 already implemented as of today (Saturday). "We will adopt several approaches to ensure the target is achieved by year end." He said this included increasing the range of items offered and enhancing cooperation with strategic retail partners. "Through these improvements, the people will have more choices. The ministry can no longer act alone as it did in the past." He said this was the second year the ministry had implemented the Zone Carnival programme, adding that six carnivals would be held nationwide this year. "For the carnival in Ranau, held in conjunction with the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign, we expect around 60,000 visitors during the three-day event." Armizan said the main goal of the initiative was to bring government services, particularly those under the ministry, closer to the people.

Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. The improvement, announced on July 22 by UK-based Henley & Partners, signals stronger global confidence in Vietnam and presents broader opportunities for its citizens in tourism, trade, and international integration. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa, or with simplified procedures such as e-visas, visas on arrival, or electronic travel authorisations (ETAs). Vietnamese passport holders can now enter 51 destinations without a traditional visa - on par with several other developing nations. Though still ranked in the lower-middle tier globally, the recent jump reflects growing trust in Vietnam's foreign policy, administrative transparency, and international reputation. It is also one of Vietnam's most significant upward moves since Henley & Partners began tracking global passport access nearly two decades ago using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Vietnamese citizens can currently travel visa-free or with simplified entry to several Asean countries, including Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as to destinations in Africa, South America, Central Asia, and South Asia, such as Kenya, Panama, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, and the Maldives. In South-East Asia, Vietnam's passport ranks above Laos (92nd) and Myanmar (93rd), while Singapore remains at the top worldwide with visa-free access to 195 destinations. According to tourism and policy experts, a passport's ranking reflects more than mobility, it serves as a 'soft measure' of a country's political stability, global standing, and the trust placed in its citizens. The improvement also mirrors Vietnam's efforts in bilateral diplomacy, upgrades in e-passport systems, and negotiations for visa waivers with countries across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Experts also noted the broader impact on outbound tourism. Visa-free access stimulates demand for international travel and enables Vietnamese tour operators to design more diverse and high-end packages. Better passport access allows students, businesspeople, and workers to engage internationally with greater ease, enhancing Vietnam's role as a contributor to global culture, trade, and diplomacy. As Vietnam continues to modernise its passport system and expand diplomatic ties, the rising passport ranking not only reflects progress but also serves as a gateway for millions to explore the world and represent their country with pride.
