Malaysia to attend Asean e-commerce conference on digital trade

SETIA ALAM: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will participate in an upcoming Asean e-commerce conference to discuss measures to safeguard the regional digital trade ecosystem. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the conference is crucial to address cross-border trade issues, as both consumers and sellers in the digital marketplace often operate from different countries. "It's important for us to reach a mutual understanding on how to protect the e-commerce ecosystem, not only to safeguard consumers but also sellers. "In the absence of regulations or an act that covers the entire Asean region, self-regulation becomes essential. "These are some of the matters that will be discussed during the Asean e-commerce conference," she said. She added that millions of businesses are now involved in e-commerce, and platform owners must ensure integrity and proper use of their platforms. "Since e-commerce laws have yet to be tabled in Parliament, we advise platforms to practice self-regulation and uphold good practices to protect consumers," she said after the closing ceremony of the TikTok Shop Summit today.

Ministry to monitor IC misuse after RON95 price adjustment

SETIA ALAM: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will issue reminders to petrol stations to prevent the misuse of Malaysian identity cards for the upcoming RON95 fuel price adjustment. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the ministry will intensify monitoring efforts to prevent leakages and misuse by foreign-registered vehicles using Malaysian ICs. "Previously, petrol stations were prohibited from selling RON95 to vehicles with foreign registration plates. "If local ICs are used (after the fuel price adjustment), we will remind petrol station operators to stay vigilant, and we may need to monitor closely to ensure these ICs are not misused repeatedly," she said at the closing ceremony of the TikTok Shop Summit today. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced several key initiatives as a gesture of appreciation from the government to the people. Among these initiatives are a one-off RM100 cash aid under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, the postponement of toll rate hikes for 10 highways, and a lower subsidised RON95 petrol price at RM1.99 per litre. On June 16, Anwar said the government would proceed with the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation, as it is crucial for the country. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said there was no issue of a RON95 price increase affecting the majority of Malaysians. On June 26, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government would move ahead with its plan to implement targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol this year. However, the rollout would be done in phases to ensure the most effective and least disruptive mechanism is adopted.

BNPL Service Providers Urged To Practise Self-regulation

SHAH ALAM, July 24 (Bernama) -- Online shopping platforms offering 'Buy Now Pay Later' (BNPL) services have been urged to self-regulate to ensure consumer rights remain protected. Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the approach was needed pending the introduction of a more comprehensive law. 'My advice to platform owners is to ensure their platforms are used responsibly and with integrity, as the e-commerce law has yet to be tabled in Parliament. 'For now, let us self-regulate, protect consumers, and foster a positive culture,' she said after the Closing Ceremony of the TikTok Shop Summit and the 2025 Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign here today. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying was previously reported to have said that BNPL transactions increased to 102.6 million in the first half of this year, compared with 83.8 million in the second half of 2024. According to Lim, the surge in BNPL transactions had exposed consumers, particularly low-income earners and those with low financial literacy, to the risk of unmanageable debts. Meanwhile, commenting on the one-off RM100 cash aid for citizens aged 18 and above, Fuziah said it can only be used at designated outlets under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme to prevent misuse. She said enforcement would be carried out continuously to prevent price hikes at the outlets involved. 'Aid recipients must use their identity card to make purchases at any of the 4,100 designated outlets nationwide and are only allowed to buy listed items to prevent misuse of the funds.
