7 upcoming movies and shows that feature New Orleans
Why it matters: It's welcome news for the city's film industry, which has seen a post-pandemic slowdown.
The big picture: While New Orleans was recently the country's fourth largest production hub, rising costs and industry shifts have pushed many projects overseas or to other states, writes Verite's Jasmine Robinson.
The industry is also figuring out its future amid the growth of streaming services.
Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill into law in June that gives the state flexibility with its tax credit program to help lure more film productions, Robinson writes.
Between the lines: Productions for three shows based on books by New Orleans author Anne Rice appear to be moving elsewhere.
"Interview with a Vampire," which shot two seasons in New Orleans, filmed its third season in Toronto.
The next season of "Mayfair Witches" will be set in Salem, Massachusetts, and a new show was shot in the U.K., according to TV Insider.

👑 "A King Like Me" on Netflix: This is a documentary about the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club and the impact COVID had on the krewe.
It also dives into how Black culture has shaped New Orleans and the nation, according to the film's description.

The movie, which is based on a true story, follows a pair of married outlaws who lose their baby to the state and become determined to get him back. After breaking her husband out of jail, the two set off on an extended car chase across Texas and eventually take a state trooper hostage. It's a thrilling, surprising movie that feels totally unlike anything else that Spielberg made over the course of his career. Anchored by a brilliant performance by Goldie Hawn, it feels like a window into a totally different career the director might have had. You can watch The Sugarland Express on Netflix. The Redeem Team (2022) Netflix has not one but two excellent basketball documentaries about the U.S. Olympic team. The Redeem Team is the first and tells the story of the 2012 U.S. men's basketball team as they fight for redemption on the world stage after a disappointing outing in 2008. Many of the biggest stars in the world were on hand to play in the Olympics and to discuss their experience in this documentary, including LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwyane Wade. This July 4, Netflix takes you beneath the surface
Swimming with dolphins is one thing. Swimming with sharks, on the other hand, feels like an altogether riskier proposition, with Netflix putting the activity at the heart of a new six-part series that premieres on July 4. All the Sharks is billed as a thrilling competition and documentary hybrid in which four teams of shark experts and enthusiasts travel the world to find and photograph as many shark species as possible — including rare and endangered ones like the Great Hammerhead and the Epaulette Shark. The teams race against each other and the clock in dramatic marine environments — including locations in the Caribbean, the Maldives, the Bahamas, and Japan — in the hope of bagging a $50,000 prize for a marine charity of their choice. All the Sharks combines elements of adventure, education, and conservation, while at the same time highlighting the ecological importance of sharks. And with the toothy creature having largely gotten a bad rap since Spielberg's terrifying Jaws movie rewired our brains to associate beach trips with potential dismemberment, it's hoped the new Netflix show will do its bit to change perceptions by highlighting sharks' beauty and vulnerability. The trailer (top) shows the teams before they head into the water with their cameras. The rules are simple. Every shark caught on camera earns you points, and the rarer the shark, the more points you earn. The team with the most points at the end walks away with the cash prize — making one marine charity very happy indeed. ‘Squid Game' Star Lee Jung-jae on His Hopes for Gi-hun's Daughter and the ‘Harsh' Finale Diet That Pushed Him to the Edge

Lee Jung-jae's Seong Gi-hun has always been the beating heart of 'Squid Game,' and his ultimate sacrifice allows the dour finale to have a flash of humanity shine through. (EXCLUSIVE) Lee spoke with Variety about the day he learned Player 456's fate, his conversations with 'Squid Game' creator Hwang Dong-hyuk about the series finale and his hopes for Gi-hun's daughter. Now that it's all been released, I think the ending was definitely something that a lot of the audience didn't expect to see. I know there are a lot of people with a wide variety of different opinions about the ending, and I'm following up on all of them. I know a lot of you like to express what you thought about the ending on social media, so I'm trying to check all of them. I got the entire script for Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time, and I read everything the day that I got it. That's when I learned about my character's fate and the ending. I was very shocked too, because it was not something I had expected to see. I remember speaking a lot about this ending with Director Hwang, and I asked him, 'Did you have different endings in mind? Were there different versions?' And he told me that he did think of other endings. However, he did share with me that he believed this was the right way to end the story of 'Squid Game.' He also shared with me that I shouldn't look at Gi-hun's sacrifice as just simply a sacrifice itself, but what if we could look at it as something that shows or symbolizes hope for humanity? That was part of the many conversations between the director and me, and we thought a lot about how the audience was going to respond to Gi-hun making his choice before he finishes what he was saying. I remember, even on the day that we shot that sequence, I believe a lot was going through his mind. I think he was also considering a different version of Gi-hun finishing what he was saying. I was also thinking a lot about different versions of that, too. But I believe Director Hwang wanted the audience to finish the sentence in their own way and in their own interpretation. I believe he designed the scene and the sequence so that the end of the sentence belongs to all of the audience, and they are the ones who will finish it with their own emotions and their own journey. Of course, it was that very last scene, that last moment of Gi-hun. I had been on a very strict diet for about 14 months leading up to that point. Especially for the last two months, I was on an extremely harsh diet compared to before we shot the series. I had lost about 10 kilograms from my regular weight. I really wanted to make sure that not only did I express Gi-hun's emotions, but I also wanted the audience to know just how completely dry and depleted he was just by looking at him. I also remember we had to shoot that last moment for a very long time. It took a lot longer than you might expect on that filming day. That was the only scene we were able to shoot, so it was extremely important and also very challenging. Thinking about the 'Squid Game' storyline, I would like to see Gi-hun's daughter dismantle the entire system. But on a personal note, I hope she doesn't learn anything about the truth of it all. I hope she doesn't know anything about her dad. I just wish she would live a very happy and stable life with her stepdad and mom.
