Tim Tszyu's loyal cutman Mark Gambin ready for Sebastian Fundora rematch in Vegas

Tim Tszyu's loyal cutman Mark Gambin ready for Sebastian Fundora rematch in Vegas

Mark Gambin is going back to the scene of the crime.
And it's no exaggeration that it did look like a grizzly crime scene by the time Tim Tszyu walked out of the ring a bloody mess after his razor-thin split decision defeat to Sebastian Fundora last year.
Gambin was the cut man that night, and the Sydneysider received intense criticism for his inability to stem the bleeding from the worst gash seen in professional boxing last year.
So if there's anyone – other than Tszyu – who could be forgiven for wanting a personal redemption arc this weekend, it's Gambin, who flew out to Las Vegas on Monday night and will once again work the corner.
But Gambin's response when asked about making things right on a personal level speaks volumes.
It tells you everything you need to know about why Tszyu didn't rush into making wholesale changes to his team like much of the boxing world was urging him to last year.
'I can't wait to get in there and make sure everything's right for Tim and for him to get the win,' Gambin told Code Sports. 'I just want to get in there and rip in and work hard as a team for Tim.
'That's the most exciting part about it, just getting in and getting the win for Tim.'
It's not about him, it's about the fighter.
Which isn't very common in the cutthroat world of professional boxing.
There were some incredibly dark moments for Gambin after the first Fundora fight.
As the pile on hit and he became the scapegoat for the first loss of Tszyu's career, he deleted all his social media accounts.
He had originally planned on spending a few days in Vegas after the fight, but left Sin City early, driving to Los Angeles and flying out the very next day.
As Tszyu prepares for his rematch with Fundora at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this weekend, Gambin still doesn't want any of the spotlight.
'That was a tough night for him, and he would've felt it the most out of anyone,' he said. 'We all would've had our little sad times when we got home, but he would've felt it the most.
'And we all understand that too.
'He's the athlete, he's the reason we're all flying to Las Vegas.'
There were calls from at home and abroad for Tszyu to immediately ditch his team following the Fundora bloodbath.
But after working with the same small crew for most of his 27 fight career, making wholesale changes was never an option.
Gambin missed Tszyu's defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev when he needed an emergency appendectomy at the start of fight week and wasn't allowed to travel to Orlando.
It sparked speculation that he'd been dumped from the team, but he was back on deck for Tszyu demolition of Joey Spencer in April, when he had remarkably little to do.
'It's also for me to thank him and make sure that he knows that I can cover anything he needs in that corner,' Gambin said. 'That's what I want to show him.
'When we did Joey Spencer, I think Tim felt really good with the team around him, and we sort've just want to pay him back and make it so that he knows that we've all got his back.'
As for any changes he's made, Gambin says he might need to pay for extra baggage after doubling up on everything in his fight night kit bag.
'Whatever I had before, I've now got two of,' he laughed. 'It's just about being completely ready – not that we weren't last time – but it puts it in perspective.
'If I had one packet of gauze, I've now got two packets. If I had five ampoules of adrenaline, now I've got 10.
'So my bag's getting pretty big, but I know I can do my job, mate.
'That was a freak night and it'll probably never happen again in the history of boxing. Touch wood.
'The majority of people wouldn't have stopped that cut. Actually, no one would've stopped it.
'You've just gotta cop it. I was there, no one else was there, and it was just a fountain. It wasn't a cut, it was a fountain, so it wasn't getting stopped.'

Victim's genitalia ‘deliberately' sprayed by police, court hears

A mentally ill woman had a graze on her back pepper-sprayed like 'graffiti on a wall' by police with the aim of inflicting 'gratuitous pain', a court has heard. Former senior constables Timothy Trautsch and Nathan Black faced Penrith District Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a series of assault charges over a 'welfare check' involving a 49-year-old woman in January 2023. The woman, who has chosen not to name, was in a 'state of psychosis' when she had her genitalia pepper-sprayed and received multiple kicks to the head after she ran away from the officers naked through the streets of Emu Plains in Sydney's west. The interaction was caught on bodyworn footage and CCTV. Ahead of their sentencing, crown prosecutor Nicholas Marney argued the men needed to be jailed for their actions, saying they had 'a complete disregard' for the woman's 'wellbeing and welfare as a human being'. Mr Marney pointed out that during the interaction, the victim was dragged across the ground by her hair causing a graze to her back. The graze was then pepper-sprayed by one of the officers. Judge Graham Turnbull SC told the court it looked like the officer was a 'graffiti artist spraying something on a wall'. 'It struck me, the particular aspect of the spray to the graze on the back,' Judge Graham Turnbull SC said. 'I struggle to understand what possible reason there could be for that other than an intention to inflict gratuitous pain.' The court also heard how the two officers charged the woman with two counts of assault after the interaction. The charges were withdrawn after nurses and paramedics reported their concern over the nature of the woman's injuries. Rewatching the CCTV on Wednesday, Judge Campbell said he believed that the victim's genitalia were 'deliberately' sprayed. 'I see things with my own eyes. The video has the potential to speak for itself. It's hard to watch,' Judge Campbell said. Mr Marney told the court a 'clear statement' needed to be made to the community as to not undermine their trust in police. 'They resorted to violence when there were other options. This wasn't two officers who snapped, this is two offenders that couldn't be bothered to do the right thing,' Mr Marney said. '[The victim] deserved to be treated respectfully and compassionately … or at the very least, lawfully.' Mr Marney also told the court Black appeared to be 'bizarrely proud of what he had done' after sending a 17-second bodyworn footage of the interaction to a colleague. 'Both OC cans emptied on her. Was f**ked,' he wrote. 'She was f**ked the whole body worn is so good shows her being f**ked. Nurses are lodging a complaint [senior officer] is investigating because we caved her, but she had a hold of the cuffs and we had no other options.' Judge Campbell said it appeared Black's motivation in sending the message was 'emotional satisfaction' and 'gloating'. The victim has since died from unrelated causes. The men's lawyer argued the former officers were acting in self defence as the victim posed a threat and was 'kicking out' at them. Speaking about Black, his lawyer labelled his client a 'frustrated offender' who had been 'pooped on'. 'He hasn't dealt with the situation well but he is not here to inflict cruelty,' he said. 'They are hyper focused on getting her into this ambulance.'

Conor McGregor breaks silence after ‘nudes were posted' and cheating scandal emerged

Conor McGregor has wished himself a happy birthday as he turns 37 amidst several controversies. The former UFC champion took to social media to celebrate after he was spotted in Florida this week, The Sun reports. Posting on X, the MMA legend wrote: 'Happy birthday to me!' Watch the biggest Aussie sports & the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. It comes after what appears to be McGregor's nude photographs were allegedly leaked by Azealia Banks earlier today. She alleges the fighter sent her the photos on X unprompted – despite her not following him back. Azealia posted the two nude mirror selfies to her own X following. The rapper claims the messages were sexual harassment, but also said that she sent the boxer nude pictures as well in a sexting-back and-forth since 2016. One image posted by Azelia seemingly shows McGregor's manhood strapped to a dumbbell, captioned 'lifting weights'. She wrote: 'How you gonna send a b**** a some crooked d*** pics then threaten her not to tell. ''Like how are you really going to sexually harass me with the potato farmer d*** then threaten me not to tell????' In a later post, Azealia claimed she had sent McGregor naked pictures as well. In a follow-up post, Azealia wrote: 'No me and Conor McGregor have been sending each other unsolicited nudes since 2016. LOL.' Also this week, McGregor was caught kissing a mystery bikini-clad woman on holiday in Florida. Yesterday, The Sun reported that the former two-division UFC champion – who hasn't fought in nearly four years -cozied up with a dark-haired woman. He then laid down a towel for the woman and wrapped an arm around her shoulders in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. McGregor's fiancee Dee Devlin was not seen in the images, raising fresh questions about the couple's relationship. But Devlin expressed her continued support for her controversial partner in a birthday post showing the pair celebrating together. The couple began dating in 2008, became engaged in 2020 and have four children together. Last year the MMA star was found liable in a civil case that accused him of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in December 2018. It was alleged that he had choked the claimant, leading to her fearing for her life. He disputes the charges, arguing that they had consensual sex. A second woman accused him of sexual assault following a 2023 incident at an NBA Finals game in Miami. He has faced no criminal charges for this second case.

Sammy Conquers All aims for Sydney success with a strategic inside barrier

A string of wide draws has cost Sammy Conquers All a couple of city wins but he can amend that when he heads back to Sydney this week. Coffs Harbour trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith ventured to Randwick with the three-year-old back in February for a TAB Highway where he charged home to finish a close third behind Lisztomania and Exit Fee. After a sixth to Tribecca Star in the NRRA Country Championship Qualifier at Lismore, Sammy Conquers All had three runs in Queensland where he finished fifth at the Gold Coast in the QTIS Jewel and two fourths at Eagle Farm. 'He is racing really well without a lot of luck with barrier draws,' said Mayfield-Smith. 'He drew wide in the Highway and had to go back which didn't suit but he got home quite strong to run third. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'He is a QTIS horses so he ran in a few of those in Brisbane and he kept drawing near the outside and going back on tracks where you had to be up there near the speed. 'He ran very good races but was quite unlucky.' After a short break, Sammy Conquers All drew well and raced outside the leader to score a smart win from Aye Aye Skipper with Brock Ryan in the saddle. The draw has again favoured the gelding when he came up with gate 1 in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1400m) with Ryan to again ride. 'He's a better chaser and doesn't like to get to the front too soon as he tends to wander,' he said. 'The longer he is looking at backsides, the better he will chase. 'From the inside draw, he should be just behind the speed and have a last crack at them.' Closer to home, Mayfield-Smith will saddle up Monte Tiana in the Winning Edge Presentations Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m) at Grafton where she has drawn barrier 11. The four-year-old mare appreciated a better track when fourth at Coffs Harbour last start and Mayfield-Smith expects her to make her presence felt again. 'She drew wide the other day and probably got back a bit too far but she motored to the line on a track that was playing to horses on the inside,' he said. 'Forget her two runs before that because she is just hopeless on wet ground. 'The gate doesn't worry me that much. She should settle about midfield and she likes to come into it down the outside. 'Her work has been extremely good and I expect her to run well.'
