Hannah Dingley leaving FAI role for Manchester City position

RTÉ News19-05-2025
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has confirmed that Hannah Dingley will leave her role as Head of Women & Girls' Football.
Dingley will take up a new role as with the Manchester City girls academy and is set to depart the FAI during the summer.
Since joining the Association, Dingley was involved in developing the women and girls' game in Ireland, which has included the launch of the Women & Girls' Football Action Plan which is part of the Football Pathways Plan.
"I've taken the difficult decision to leave the Association to take on a new challenge with Manchester City," said Dingley.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time working in women and girls' football in Ireland and believe there is so much potential to build in this area to ensure that the Football Pathways Plan has maximum impact on Irish football."
FAI CEO David Courell said: "We thank Hannah for her time at the Association where she showed excellent professionalism and hard work in helping us to further develop the women and girls' game in Ireland.
"Having launched the Women & Girls' Football Action Plan, her successor will be able to continue the important work that Hannah started. We wish Hannah the very best in the next chapter of her career."
Further details on the process for the Head of Women & Girls' role will be announced in due course, according to the FAI statement.

Summer soccer sceptics to be offered opt-out avenue by FAI

Leagues will have to apply to an FAI committee for a derogation from the summer soccer edict. The vast majority of grassroots leagues prefer to stick with the traditional September to May format, ripping asunder plans by the FAI to begin a full transition in January with schoolboy/girl leagues. The FAI hierarchy have been aware of the resistance for months, which heightened after President Paul Cooke was summoned to meet the two largest affiliates in May – the Schoolboys/girls FAI and Leinster FA. That feedback has been relayed at meetings of the 12-person FAI board since last month. All that remains is the establishment of an opt-out mechanism for leagues, entailing an application for approval. The climbdown has caused significant embarrassment to senior FAI executives who were adamant about persevering with full implementation after chief football officer Marc Canham in April lodged his three-month notice to quit. A full switch to align with a men's League of Ireland season in place since 2002 formed a bedrock of Canham's Football Pathways Plan launched in February 2024. Under the FAI's phased proposal, schoolboys/girls are to introduce the 'calendar' season from next January for players up to age 12. The concept has been doomed since the top six leagues in the country, DDSL and North Dublin, along with Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick sought to retain their right of choice. Leagues have informed their clubs at AGMs they'll be carrying on as normal for the 2025/26 season. Far from an FAI ploy of attaching summer soccer conditionality to the awarding of a €5,800 grant for the annual Gaynor and Kennedy Cup working, it led to a backlash from the coalface. Even leagues that operate in the summer such as Tipperary South slated the FAI for trying to implement a 'two-tier apartheid' system, requesting their grant be donated to specific charities. Unrest at grassroots level was reflected this week by the four provincial bodies requesting a meeting with the FAI top brass over the next week. 'With the AGM now delayed inexplicably until October and an apparent impasse around the roll-out of the Football Pathways Plan, our members have serious concerns that we need to address urgently,' read an excerpt from their stinger.

Maguire makes the cut as Yamashita leads in Wales

Leona Maguire is the sole Irish player to make the cut at the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl. The Cavan golfer carded a one-over 73 on Friday to sit on one-over-par overall in a tie for 37th. Japan's Yamashita followed her first-round 68 with a bogey-free 65 to open up a three-shot lead over compatriot and joint overnight leader Rio Takeda, who carded a 69 on another blustery day on the Welsh links. Switzerland's Chiara Tamburlini, Thailand's Pajaree Anannarukarn and American Lindy Duncan are all tied for third, four shots further back on four under. Lottie Woad lost further ground after a triple bogey in her second-round score of 70 left her nine shots behind on two under. Woad, tournament favourite in just her second event as a professional after winning the Scottish Open last week, was on the charge after her sixth birdie of the day at the 14th before suffering a big setback at the par-four 16th. Another big group, including 2021 Women's Open winner Madelene Sagstrom and Germany's Laura Fuenfstueck - still out on the course having played 12 holes - are tied on three under. Japan's Miyu Yamashita on day two of the 2025 AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl. Picture: Nigel French/PA Woad, Wales' Darcey Harry and American world number one Nelly Korda are among another group of eight, are tied in 11th on two under. Woad, who also won the Irish Open and finished tied for third at The Evian Championship in her final weeks as an amateur, began the day five shots behind the leaders after a first-round level-par 72. The 21-year-old parred the first five holes on Friday before birdies at the sixth and eighth took her to the turn on two under. Four more birdies and a bogey in the next five holes lifted her up to fifth on the leaderboard on five under, but after another par at the 15th, a penalty drop at the 16th, where she two-putted after chipping on to the green, saw her drop three shots. Woad told Sky Sports: "It's probably playing the toughest hole of the day. I hit a good drive but pushed the three-wood a bit and it went in the one thick bit over there. "I got a bit unlucky with that but then took my medicine afterwards and ended up making a seven. "I'm happy with how I recovered after it. I was a bit angry after that but I just had to move on quickly." Woad parred the final two holes - she missed a birdie putt on the 18th - to finish the second round alongside 22-year-old Harry as the highest-placed home nations players. Harry followed up her opening-round 70 with a 72, which could have been better but for double bogeys at the 10th and 15th. Curtis Cup star Mimi Rhodes carded a 74 to sit in a big group tied in 19th place on one under, while Charley Hull is a shot further back, tied in 29th place, after she birdied the last for a 71. New Zealand's defending champion Lydia Ko slipped out of contention after posting a second successive 73 to sit two over, while American Lillia Vu, the 2023 Open champion, missed the cut after rounds of 74 and 77 left her seven over. Lauren Walsh carded a three-over 75 to sit on three-over, missing the cut by just one shot. Anna Foster also missed the cut.
