Nationals make 17-year-old Willits youngest No.1 in MLB Draft history
Eli Willits, a 17-year-old US high school shortstop, was selected by the Washington Nationals with the first overall pick in Sunday's Major League Baseball Draft at Atlanta.
The switch-hitting teen from Oklahoma's Fort Cobb-Broxton High School became the youngest-ever number one overall selection in the MLB Draft.

"I'm just excited and thankful for the Nationals organization for giving me this chance," Willits said. "I'm just ready to get out there and get to work."
The move came only a week after the Nationals, who have not made the playoffs since winning the 2019 World Series, fired general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez with assistant general manager Mike DeBartolo named the interim general manager and bench coach Miguel Cairo promoted to interim manager.
Willits, whose father Reggie played parts of six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels from 2006-11, was the youngest prospect in the draft.
The Angels took right-handed pitcher Tyler Bremner from the University of California at Santa Barbara with the second pick.
Seattle went third and took left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson, chosen the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series for champion Louisiana State University.

The plan in acquiring the 31-year-old would be for him to be the No. 3 starter in the rotation behind Max Fried and Carlos Rodón." Eflin hasn't had the best season so far for the Orioles as he's posted a 5.95 ERA in 12 starts. His strikeout numbers are down from the previous two seasons as he's only striking out 6.1 batters every nine innings. He's someone who could bounce back for the Yankees, and his situation makes him the type of player they could take a chance on at the end of the month. "Getting another postseason starter will be imperative for general manager Brian Cashman after losing Clarke Schmidt for the year to Tommy John surgery," wrote Kelly. "Eflin is a rental, so the Yankees could acquire him from the division-rival Orioles without having to trade a top-100 prospect. That would leave them wiggle room to address other areas on the roster, such as third base and the back of the bullpen." Grabbing a starter at the deadline without giving up a top-100 prospect is the perfect situation. Eflin's numbers this year will lower his value, so Baltimore won't get as much back as it would have if his ERA was much lower. If he's still on the injured list at the deadline but making progress, the Yankees could try to grab him for even less. Overall, this is a low-risk, high-reward type of move the Yankees should look into making even within their own division. MLB All-Star Game selection needs work to promote merit over marketing
MLB still has the best All-Star Game, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Far from it. The fan voting is much improved, but the league selection process needs work. Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch, Cristopher Sánchez and of course Juan Soto shouldn't be sitting home while MLB invites middle relievers and a just-promoted rookie. Advertisement Some veteran players aren't thrilled to see the uber-talented fireballing rookie Jacob Misiorowski make it as a replacement after five MLB starts. Many fans will enjoy The Miz.
