Glacial floods alert issued for northwest Pakistan with more heavy rain forecast
Downpours are heavier in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province than the same period last year, prompting weather advisories and alerts for flooding from glacial lake outbursts, said Anwar Shahzad, a spokesperson for the local disaster management authority.
A letter from the authority sent out mid-July said 'persistent high temperatures may accelerate snow and glacier melt and subsequent weather events' in vulnerable parts of the region.
Dr. Abdul Samad, from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department, said rescue teams evacuated more than 500 holidaymakers from Naran after a cloudburst overnight Friday caused a road closure. Authorities deployed heavy machinery to remove debris and restore access.
In the neighboring Gilgit-Baltistan region, the government said it had distributed hundreds of tents, thousands of food packets, and medicine to flood-affected communities.
Spokesperson Faizullah Firaq said Saturday there was 'severe destruction' in some areas and damage to houses, infrastructure, crops, and businesses.
Search operations were underway to find missing people on the Babusar Highway, where flooding struck nine villages. Helicopters rescued tourists stuck in the popular spot of Fairy Meadows, he added.
Pakistan has received above-average rainfall this monsoon season, raising concerns of a repeat of the devastating 2022 floods that submerged a third of the country and killed 1,737 people. Some 260 have died across Pakistan so far this season, which runs through to mid-September.
Pakistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, but one of the lowest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

A heat advisory in place today for the Pittsburgh area with temperatures expected to reach the 90s with heat indexes in the 100s. Any Alert Days Ahead? Due to the Heat Advisory issued by the NWS we have made today a First Alert Weather Day. Could potentially have another one in place Wednesday. Aware: From June 1 through July 27th, we have spent the 4th most time on record with temperatures at or above 75°. This has been a hot summer. No matter how you look at it, this summer has been a hot one. Data continues to show what we already know. The one I pulled yesterday was just how long we have seen temperatures at or above 75 degrees so far this 'summer'. For the stats, I pulled data from June 1 through this past Sunday, July 27th. Data shows that we stand at number 4 on the list of 'hottest' based on this, with a total of 658 hours spent at or above 75°. Last year, over the same span, we spent 706 total hours at or above 75°. For people who don't have a/c units, 75° is a good cutoff when it comes to the body's ability to cool down and recover from hot weather. It is also a good way of looking at how humid it has been over long stretches, with warmer temperatures happening when humidity levels are higher. Highs today should hit the low 90s. There is a heat advisory in place for Pittsburgh and surrounding areas through 8 this evening. Heat index values should hit triple digits. A heat advisory is issued for our area when the heat index value is expected to be between 100° - 105°. That's the case for today. We may also have a heat advisory issued on Wednesday with a set-up similar to today. I have Wednesday's high temperature also hitting the low 90s with high humidity levels. Interestingly, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has us in a marginal risk for storms on Wednesday. Relief from the heat comes on Thursday with a cool front passing us by. Most of Thursday will still be humid, but I have highs not hitting the 80s. That to me may change. I am actually surprised that data shows us just in the 70s for the day. I have almost bumped up temperatures already, but will wait another day before bumping those highs up. To me, we should still have a hot airmass in places through at least noon. We will see more cloud cover, but it shouldn't take much to see highs in the 80s ahead of afternoon rain. Rain and storms will be strong and maybe severe as the cold front sweeps through. Behind the front, we will see more comfy air in place with highs in the upper 70s both Friday and Saturday. Low humidity values will make it comfy through at least next Tuesday. False update about China travel policy for Pakistanis spreads online
China's foreign affairs ministry has not removed Pakistan from its list of visa-free countries during an update in June 2025, contrary to rumours swirling online. A review of an earlier list before the recent update found visitors from the South Asian nation had always required visas to enter China. "China has removed Pakistan from the list of visa-free countries," reads a post on X published on July 14, 2025. The post carries a graphic of Chinese President Xi Jinping holding a list of countries titled "Visa-Free Countries". Text on the graphic says: "China just announced 'visa-free entry for 74 countries' but 'Pakistan didn't make the list." It also shares a link to a website. Similar posts also surfaced on Threads and Facebook. A keyword search on Google found the latest lists published in July detailing visa exemptions granted by China to foreign citizens holding valid ordinary passports visiting for business, tourism, family or friends visits, exchange and transit (archived here and here). Compared with a previous list on May 22, the only change is to grant visa-free access to four more countries announced on June 9. No countries have been removed, and Pakistan has not been on the earlier lists (archived link). It is also not covered in China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy, according to the National Immigration Agency (archived link). Visa-free access to China is only given to Pakistani citizens holding diplomatic or official passports (archived link). "I confirm that we were not on the list so no question of removal," Foreign Ministry spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan told AFP on July 28, 2025. China is Pakistan's largest arms supplier and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar confirmed that Islamabad used Chinese jets in the conflict with India in May (archived link).
