SASSA beneficiaries just 80 days' away from NEW nightmare
However, not even Postbank staff were able to handle the number of affected SASSA beneficiaries. And even after several deadline extensions, with millions still unassisted countrywide, the department pulled the plug on the Postbank card-swap debacle. POSTBANK SASSA BENEFICIARIES HAVE 80 DAYS Changing your SASSA grant provider is relatively easy, if you haven't done so already. Image: File
Nevertheless, while the card swap is no longer necessary for SASSA beneficiaries, there's a new payment nightmare looming on the horizon. Now the Public Protector has flagged serious failures by the South African Social Security Agency and Postbank.
Unending delays and irregular staff appointments, there is now no payment alternative in place when SASSA's arrangement with the government entity ends on Tuesday 30 September 2025. As such, the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Alexandra Abrahams is urging any SASSA beneficiaries still with Postbank to switch to another reputable bank as soon as possible. Postbank's master agreement with SASSA runs out at the end of September. Image: File
If the Public Protector's warning rings true, as many as two-million SASSA beneficiaries may not be paid from October 2025 onwards. Investigations into Postbank include allegations of mismanagement of social grants and ineffective implementation of the grant payment systems. Likewise, it is looking into the irregular appointment of former SASSA CEO, Busisiwe Memela-Khambula.
In its report, the Public Prosecutor mentioned something that all SASSA beneficiaries still with Postbank should note. 'The Master Service Agreement with Postbank is expiring at the end of September 2025. And an extension of the contract seems implausible, in light of the fundamental compliance issues experienced between SASSA and Postbank. Therefore, affected SASSA beneficiaries should find a new credible service provider,' says the report. Soon the SASSA/Postbank Gold card really will be a thing of the past. Image: File
Furthermore, the DA's Alexandra Abrahams has requested that SASSA, Postbank, and the South African Reserve Bank be held to account in Parliament as a matter of urgency. 'SASSA's inability to appoint a credible grant payment service provider has jeopardised the SASSA grant payments of 2 169 371 beneficiaries, including those of Child, Disability and Older Person grants. SASSA beneficiaries require urgent clarity on how their grants will be paid from October 2025 onwards,' concludes Abrahams. ARE YOU WITH POSTBANK AND HAVE YOU CHANGED PROVIDERS YET?

Ramaphosa says GNU was formed to fix unemployment, crime, and corruption in SA
President Cyril Ramaphosa claims the GNU was created to fix urgent national issues. Image: GCIS, IOL Graphics President Cyril Ramaphosa claims the Government of National Unity (GNU) was formed with challenges in mind, including unemployment, rampant crime, poverty, corruption, and restoring the trust of the people, despite the ANC having lost its majority in the May 2024 general elections. He made the remarks as he presented the Presidency's budget vote for the 2025–26 financial year at the National Assembly on Wednesday. 'Today, the world faces real and significant challenges, and so do we as a country and as a nation,' Ramaphosa told Parliament. 'We face an increasingly volatile world, with many disruptions to global trade, as well as deepening conflicts that are raging in many parts of the world.' Ramaphosa acknowledged high levels of unemployment and sluggish economic growth that have hindered job creation. 'We face the corrosive effects of corruption and pervasive crime, to which the poorest among us are most vulnerable,' he said. 'We also face the daunting task of building a capable state that can address these challenges and restore the trust of our people.' Ramaphosa claimed the GNU was established to place the country on firmer footing, promote economic growth, foster transformation, and maintain peace and prosperity. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ 'When we established the GNU, we understood we were embarking on a new era in our democracy,' he said. 'We understood it would be complex and involve navigating novel challenges.' However, is it widely known that the GNU was not born from a vision to address these challenges but rather from necessity, after the African National Congress (ANC) failed to secure a majority in the May 2024 general elections - for the first time since the dawn of democracy in 1994. The coalition government at the national level, saw the ANC partnering with its former political rivals, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus. The GNU, which recently marked its first anniversary, has faced turbulence. Coalition partners have frequently clashed over policy and legislation. The DA has taken the Expropriation Without Compensation Act and the Employment Equity Amendment Act to court, opposing ANC-led initiatives. In April, the party successfully challenged the passing of a fiscal framework in Parliament, which had been pushed through with support from non-GNU parties such as ActionSA and Build One South Africa. The DA, the second-largest member of the GNU, has also failed in efforts to block the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act and the National Health Insurance Act. Despite these internal tensions, Ramaphosa emphasised the adoption of the Medium-Term Development Plan, outlining actions over the next five years to address national priorities. 'First, we aim to drive inclusive growth and job creation. Second, to tackle poverty and address the high cost of living. And third, to build a capable, ethical and developmental state,' he said. He said all the government departments and entities are committed to implementing these priorities with urgency and purpose. 'Most importantly, there is a shared understanding that we need to rise above our differences and work together to make progress on the important challenges our country faces,' he said. Ramaphosa said the GNU approach emphasises national cohesion, partnership and unity. A national dialogue process will begin with a National Convention on August 15. 'The national dialogue is not just about talking,' Ramaphosa said. 'Like CODESA, the National Peace Accord, and the constitutional consultation process, this dialogue is expected to produce tangible results.' He said the dialogue aims to build consensus around a shared vision and social compact aligned with the National Development Plan. 'This does not displace our democratic processes, nor does it divert us from the electoral mandate of this Parliament,' he said. 'The government will continue to act to address immediate concerns - to grow the economy, create jobs, tackle corruption and crime, and improve local government.' The medium-term plan, he said, includes specific and measurable targets to help guide national progress. IOL Politics

Temu's 'local warehouse' in SA - Here's how it really works
Temu, the popular online marketplace known for bargain-priced goods shipped directly from China, recently launched its 'local warehouse' in South Africa. The warehouse will supposedly promise much faster delivery times for local shoppers, with items being delivered within one or two days. But here's the catch: Temu doesn't actually own any warehouses in the country. How does it even work? As reported by Mybroadband , the platform relies entirely on third-party logistics providers. These are independent facilities where sellers can store inventory. On the Temu platform, products stocked in these facilities are tagged as 'local' or from a 'local warehouse', but the warehouses themselves don't actually belong to Temu. According to the company, this setup is part of its local fulfilment model. Sellers manage the storage, shipping, and after-sales support themselves. The idea is to shorten delivery times and improve customer service, something Temu says South African shoppers will start noticing as the model expands. Sellers choose to store their products in third-party warehouses located within South Africa. This allows for faster delivery since the items don't have to be shipped from overseas. Temu highlights the estimated delivery time for each local product and even shows the fastest time a seller has achieved, along with how consistently they hit that mark, giving shoppers a clearer idea of what to expect. Because these products are already in the country, they don't incur import duties. However, shoppers should be aware that a R75 delivery fee applies for each seller if your order from them totals less than R650. That means if you're buying from multiple sellers and none of your orders exceed R650, you'll be paying R75 per seller at checkout. Bank scams: Have you been a victim? Let us know!
Bank scams: Have you been a victim? Let us know! Sophisticated banking scams are proving a challenge when discerning fact from fraud. Investigative journalist Irma Green can testify to this when she was recently duped by a fraudster. Have you been targeted recently? Share your experience and join the fight against financial crime. Highly organised fraudsters As a seasoned investigative journalist, my scam radar is always on high alert. Having read and written about it, I never thought I would fall prey to criminals who steal people's money. However, the fraudsters who targeted me were highly organised and had several tools that made them seem legit, so even though I thought I would be able to spot a scam a mile away, I was deceived. Professional assistance raises no suspicions In my case, the person who phoned me presented herself as a member of my bank's fraud department, alerting me to suspicious transactions on my account. The conversation took place on my car's speakerphone, with a senior journalist colleague listening in on the process. Not once were we sceptical or suspicious of the 'professional individual from the bank' who posed as someone offering help, not heartache. Share your story to help make a difference To piece together the magnitude of these scams and write a series of articles, I need our readers' assistance.
