Ray: So far, Aquaman has sent our title character into the world of magic – a big change for Aquaman's usual adventures. Atlantis has been spirited away to the realm of Dagon, a magic city ruled by a mad God-king, and assassins have come after Aquaman from that world, but we've never seen it – until now. This issue opens with our first glimpse inside Dagon's world, and it's horrific. A family is on trial for stealing water, and Dagon's cruel functionary judges promptly order them executed by a swarm of sharks for a 'crime' that only the father was guilty of. I kept expecting a hero to come to the rescue, but those living in dictatorships often have no such recourse. Aquaman, Arion, and Vivienne are deep undercover in the city, hoping to escape detection – but Aquaman can't sit by and watch as people are threatened and killed for nothing in particular. And that's where the coolest new character debut in a while comes in. Judge, jury, and executioner. Via DC Comics.
I love when public domain heroes and villains show up in modern books. Technically, any writer can just decide they want Dracula to be a character in their comic and no one can stop them! But it rarely works as well as it did here, as Captain Nemo finds himself a prisoner in the City of Dagon, one step ahead of the guards. Aquaman comes to the rescue and teams up with the eccentric explorer, but there's only one way to the main villain – by getting inside the gates. And the easiest way to do that is by getting arrested. This Aquaman is a much more 'Leeroy Jenkins' version than we've seen before, and his tactic here is particularly funny – but it doesn't change the fact that he's ready to unleash hell once he's in front of the judges. This book has big ideas and big action, but we haven't seen much of the big bad himself yet – and from the very end of this issue, it seems like we might be heading for the darkest issue yet.

Comic-Con 2025 set to kick off in a year that some major superheroes are sitting out

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) — Tens of thousands of fans — many in costumes — will descend Thursday on Comic-Con International, the four day pop culture spectacle that will feature updates on the new 'Predator' movie, 'Alien' series and a special appearance by George Lucas. Just don't expect major news about the future of Marvel's movie slate or what's next for the hit relaunch of DC's high-flying 'Superman' franchise. Both studios are sitting out Comic-Con 2025, as far as their film slates go. An estimated 135,000 people will attend the convention, which will greet Lucas on Sunday for his first Comic-Con appearance. The 'Star Wars' creator will discuss his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art that will open next year in Los Angeles. Fans of the 'Alien' and 'Predator' franchises will have plenty to cheer. Elle Fanning, star of 'Predator: Badlands,' will discuss the film at Comic-Con's massive Hall H this week. FX will also bring the stars and creators of 'Alien: Earth,' a series that will unleash the Xenomorph species on Earth next month. 'Alien: Earth' will be one of the projects that brings a massive interactive experience to San Diego, with a replica of spacecraft from the series. The attraction will feature what's described as a terrifying mission at night. Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. Marvel may not be presenting new movies, but it will have a 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' attraction near the convention, a tie-in to Friday's release of the latest attempt to successfully launch its 'first family' in theaters. Thousands of fans got a sneak peek at the convention's 460,000 square foot (42,700 square meter) exhibitor section, which features exclusive merchandise, comic book art and exhibits from brands like Star Wars, Lego, Nickelodeon, Paramount and more.

Review – Absolute Wonder Woman #10: Secrets of the Labyrinth

Absolute Wonder Woman #10 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: After a first arc full of kaijus and dark fantasy, Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman have plunged us into one of the best set pieces in all of classic fiction – the minotaur. As Diana makes her way through the massive underground maze, she encounters new enemies – the mad queen Clea and her army of Fish-men who look straight out of the world of Lovecraft. But she also meets some unexpected new allies – the hulking but gentle minotaur Ferdinand, who has been trapped there for eons, and the seemingly mute young siren Petra. The issue opens with a dramatic fight scene, as Clea unleashes her army. As Ferdinand makes an unexpected sacrifice, Diana dedicates herself to protecting the young girl in her care – but then pulls a classic Diana move of her own, getting to the exit but turning back. No man left behind, even if they have a giant bull's head. Monsters of the deep. Via DC Comics. One of my favorite parts about this book has been how well it sews together its present day plot-driven segments with the flashbacks to Diana's youth. This issue finds Diana in her younger years, first beginning her training as a warrior with the secret guidance of the Gods. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, and she sticks to this when a massive demonic cat-monster arrives in hell, refusing to take its bait – until it tries to harm an innocent creature under her protection, and it discovers just how far she's willing to go. That drive is what brings her back to the labyrinth to rescue Ferdinand. As this issue comes to a close, though, Diana might need to be more concerned with her own safety – the Fish-Men have a unique hallucinogenic property that turns the maze into a kaleidoscope of surreal visuals that allow Hayden Sherman's art to really lean into the brilliantly surreal. Another excellent issue of one of the best books on the stands. To find reviews of all the DC issues, visit DC This Week. GeekDad received this comic for review purposes. Liked it?
