Playing partner Haotong Lee also birdied so his overall lead remained four.
McIlroy birdied the second to reduce the gap to the leader back to six but there were no signs of the early fireworks of the previous day when he was three under through four on his way to a 66.
The Masters champion knew he would have to realistically better that if he were to stand a chance of winning his second Claret Jug but struggled for momentum and bundling a chip out of the rough way past the pin resulted in a dropped shot at the fourth he could ill afford.
Also back at eight under was playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick, who began the day one shot better off only to bogey the par-three third.
Bryson DeChambeau was also on that number through 16 holes after a six-birdie charge, while former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama carded seven birdies and one bogey in the group behind.

That much became clear earlier this week, when the Jets took the rare step of re-introducing live tackling into practice. It was evident again on Thursday, when defensive end Eric Watts crushed Breece Hall and a couple of fans nearly came to blows in the bleachers. We're only in July but one father didn't take kindly to his view being obstructed by an autograph hunter. 'Oh, I love this right here,' said Williams, who has not done live tackling in practice since college. 'At OTAs Coach Glenn already said we're going to be physical during training camp. I said: 'You talking my language!' The hope for Williams? It all pays off come September and he can achieve his mission of ending the joint-longest playoff drought in America's major leagues (14 seasons). But all the brutality could make some coaches wince. Not here. 'I love it,' defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. 'It's a fine line. Everybody's worried about getting hurt and this is football. But… AG is doing a hell of a job, trying to prepare us for exactly what we're going to see.' Engstrand echoed those sentiments. Some have barely attempted to disguise their digs at former head coach Robert Saleh, who was sacked last October - midway through another miserable season. It was obvious back in January, when Glenn was introduced at this facility, that he possesses all the self-assurance and strength of personality required to be a head coach. Glenn wasted little time before putting his stamp on this team. He told Aaron Rodgers his services were longer required and began laying the foundations for a new era with Justin Fields under center. His impact on the practice field is evident already, too. 'I see it in our competing level,' special teams coordinator Chris Banjo said on Thursday. 'When you talk about what AG stresses and his personality, I think it becomes very, very infectious. 'That starts to spread and you start to see the juice from guys at practice, the competitive talking – I won't use the word I wanted to use – on the field, I think that all signifies what AG is bringing. The juice they've been able to play with has been really cool to watch.' All that remains to be seen? Whether Glenn can build the playbook and the roster to drag New York back towards the big time. Whether the Jets can find that 'juice' once the season starts. Williams wants the New York Jets defense to be 'consistently feared... every single week' On Thursday, there were flashes of brilliance from Fields but also plenty of evidence that, offensively, the Jets still have a lot to work on. Even if there is no doubting the talent of Wilson and running back Hall. It was a privilege to watch their respective duels with Sauce Gardner and Williams up close. 'I love it - every single day when the coaches be like, 'We got that money on the line,' I need all of it,' Williams said. 'Anytime we go pass rush like today or do a tackle drill, I got to have the best running back in the league up.' This session belonged to the defense. No question. Bills OL Alec Anderson (knee) out week-to-week
July 31 - Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Alec Anderson is considered week-to-week after undergoing arthroscopic surgery, the team said Thursday. Anderson proved to be a capable backup last season and he made four starts at tackle while playing all 17 regular-season games. He also saw action in all three of Buffalo's playoff games. Anderson played 27 percent of the offensive snaps for a Buffalo position group that allowed the fewest sacks (14) in the NFL. Anderson, 25, went undrafted out of UCLA during the 2023 draft and hooked on with the Buffalo practice squad. Also Thursday, tight end Dawson Knox was on the practice field for the first time this season. Knox (hamstring) began training camp on the active/non-football injury list. Knox, 28, caught 22 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown in 16 games (13 starts) last season. Overall, Knox has 193 receptions for 2,277 yards and 23 touchdowns over 85 games (71 starts) in six seasons with the Bills. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. --Field Level Media

NFL quarterback turns on his teammates after difficult start to training camp
Tennessee Titans rookie Cam Ward has offered a brutal assessment of his teammates after a rocky start to their training camp. The quarterback experienced his first two padded practices in the NFL and evidently the former Miami Hurricanes star has been left less than impressed. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ward said: 'I just think we're very mid right now. At the end of the day, it all starts with me. 'I just don't think we're at where we need to be, but we've got a little bit of time. Every day we get better as a whole. We're a young team, but that's no excuse. 'I have to get on the same page with my receivers, watch more film, and be more accurate with the football'. The Titans website reported that the rookie suffered four interceptions across two days of training. He was 11-of-23 in Wednesday's practice and 11-of-26 in Tuesday's session. 'It might not be where I wanted to be, but I'm throwing to 15, 16 different people every day,' Ward continued. Ward's selection by the Titans was hardly a surprise, considering they struggled massively in 2024 under the poor play of Will Levis. When they drafted Ward, the Miami star got permission from Hall-of-Famer Warren Moon to don his No. 1 jersey that the team had 'retired'. But now, Ward will take the starting job uncontested, after Levis was confirmed to miss the rest of the season earlier this week. The Titans announced on Monday that Levis had underwent shoulder surgery and wouldn't be active for the 2025 season. When asked about how he took the news of his teammate's injury, Ward gave a somewhat ruthless response. 'I didn't really have a reaction. I focus on Cam Ward,' the rookie told reporters. Veteran backup Brandon Allen is set to take the QB2 spot while another career benchwarmer, Tim Boyle, is projected to slide up to QB3. After initially beginning the 2023 season on the bench, Levis replaced Ryan Tannehill for eight games in the middle of the campaign. Last year, Levis became the full-time starter for Tennessee, but did not put up the most impressive numbers. Meanwhile, Ward is the first quarterback that the Titans have taken in the first round since they selected Marcus Mariota second overall in 2015. Ward is also the first first-overall pick that the franchise has had since the then-Houston Oilers took running back Earl Campbell in 1978.
