Robinhood Wants to Redo Wall Street on the Blockchain

Gizmodoa day ago
Robinhood, the company behind one of the most popular trading apps for everyday investors, just revealed a sweeping new vision for the future of finance. And its bold plan seems to leave traditional Wall Street institutions behind.
The company announced a daring set of new products this week from Cannes, France. These offerings are designed to move traditional financial assets, like company stocks, investment funds (ETFs), and even complex trading tools called derivatives, entirely onto the blockchain.
The clear message? Crypto isn't just for digital money anymore. It's for everything.
The most attention-grabbing announcement was stock tokens. Think of these as digital versions of U.S. company stocks and ETFs. Now, for the first time, European customers can get access to these major American investments without needing a traditional stockbroker, a big Wall Street firm, or even being physically in the U.S.
Unlike buying regular shares through a brokerage, these stock tokens exist on Arbitrum, which is a Layer 2 blockchain built on top of Ethereum. Imagine Ethereum as a busy main highway for digital transactions; a Layer 2 like Arbitrum is a faster, less congested side road that uses the main highway for security, making transactions quicker and cheaper. These tokens can be bought and sold 24 hours a day, five days a week. Robinhood claims they come with no commission fees or extra charges from them, and even pay out dividends (portions of a company's profit distributed to shareholders, now paid directly to token holders). Over 200 different stocks and ETFs are available.
In simple terms: your investment portfolio now lives on a digital, decentralized ledger.
At our recent crypto event, we announced a limited Stock Token giveaway on OpenAI and SpaceX to eligible European customers. While it is true that they aren't technically 'equity' (you can see the precise dynamics in our Terms for those interested), the tokens effectively give…
— Vlad Tenev (@vladtenev) July 2, 2025But Robinhood isn't just using existing blockchain technology. It's actively building its own custom Layer 2 blockchain. This new digital network is specifically designed to power the tokenization of real-world assets. This means taking things that exist in the physical world, like company shares, investment funds, and potentially even real estate in the future, and turning them into digital tokens that can be easily traded and managed on the blockchain.
Robinhood's ultimate goal, they say, is to create a financial system where assets trade around the clock, are easily moved between different digital wallets (called seamless bridging), and can be self-custodied. Self-custody means you, and only you, directly control your digital assets, rather than a bank or brokerage holding them for you. This new blockchain will also support staking (more on that below) and seamless trading without needing traditional banks or clearinghouses, which are financial middlemen that ensure trades between buyers and sellers are completed smoothly and securely.
It's a vision that, if it succeeds, could replace many core functions of today's financial infrastructure: from the stockbrokers who execute trades to the custodians who hold assets and the exchanges where they change hands.
Beyond the stock tokens, Robinhood also announced crypto perpetual futures for its European customers. These are advanced trading tools that allow investors to bet on the future price of cryptocurrencies, with the option to use leverage (trading with borrowed money to amplify potential gains or losses). Unlike traditional futures contracts, these 'perpetuals' never expire, offering continuous exposure to crypto asset prices.
For eligible U.S. customers, Robinhood is also launching crypto staking, starting with popular cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Solana. Staking is a way to earn passive income by 'locking up' your crypto to support the operations and security of a blockchain network. Think of it like earning interest in a savings account, but for your digital assets.
And there's more for customers in both regions: European users will gain access to smart routing for crypto trades (a system that automatically finds the best price for your trade by checking multiple exchanges). Both U.S. and EU customers will see Cortex, an AI-powered investing tool, and U.S. customers will soon get a crypto rewards credit card. Cortex is an artificial intelligence assistant designed to help customers quickly understand price movements and market shifts in real time.
While the U.S. financial market remains heavily regulated, Robinhood is strategically using its established presence in Europe to experiment with a groundbreaking financial future. In this vision, assets are converted into digital tokens, they are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and their movement is managed by computer code on a blockchain rather than by traditional clearinghouses. The idea is straightforward but revolutionary: replace Wall Street's old infrastructure with the efficiency and transparency of a blockchain.
Robinhood's strategy is clear: make investing simpler and more widely available, using the fundamental technology of cryptocurrency to achieve this. Often, this can happen without the user needing to be a 'crypto native' (someone deeply immersed in the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology).
If successful, this isn't just a series of new product launches; it could be a blueprint for how digital assets quietly but fundamentally reshape the global financial system from within. The 'Trojan Horse' has truly entered the city gates, and the world is waiting to see what emerges.

ETH Price Surges as $2.9B Inflows, EthCC, and Robinhood's L2 Fuel Bullish Sentiment

Ether (ETH) 3.5% in the past 24 hours to $2,519 as of 18:59 UTC on June 30, according to CoinDesk Research's technical analysis model, supported by continued institutional demand, network upgrades, and major retail platform integrations. Institutional interest remains robust, with CoinShares reporting $429 million in net inflows into ether investment products over the past week and nearly $2.9 billion year-to-date. This trend has coincided with a declining ETH supply on exchanges and rising staking levels, with over 35 million ETH —a round 28% of the total supply — now locked in proof-of-stake contracts. Market analysts suggest that these factors are reducing liquid supply and bolstering ether's long-term investment thesis. Robinhood announced on Monday that it is developing its own Layer-2 blockchain using Arbitrum's rollup infrastructure. The network is not yet live, but the initiative will eventually support Ethereum staking, tokenized stock trading, and perpetual crypto futures. Although the L2 is under development, the decision to build it on Ethereum's rollup ecosystem is seen as a long-term vote of confidence in Ethereum's scalability roadmap. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has also introduced a new digital identity framework using zero-knowledge proofs. This system allows users to verify traits or credentials without revealing private data and is designed to help Web3 apps incorporate privacy-preserving identity systems. Analysts view this as a key step toward wider adoption of decentralized applications requiring sensitive user authentication. Meanwhile, the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) kicked off in Cannes, France, gathering more than 6,400 attendees and 500 speakers. The event showcases Ethereum's ongoing developer momentum through presentations on new tools, scaling strategies, and protocol improvements. Despite the positive momentum, ETH remains just below its 200-day moving average, suggesting technical barriers still exist. However, the confluence of inflows, developer progress, and scaling plans continues to support a constructive outlook. Technical Analysis Highlights Ether traded between $2,438.50 and $2,523 from June 29 19:00 to June 30 18:00, marking a 3.47% range. The largest spike occurred during the 22:00–23:00 UTC window on June 29, when ETH surged 2.9% on volume of 368,292 ETH, briefly pushing through the $2,500 barrier. On June 30 at 15:00 UTC, ETH found strong support around $2,438 on above-average volume, confirming a bullish floor. A local high of $2,523 was reached earlier in the day, establishing resistance just above the psychological $2,500 level. During the final hour from 18:00 to 18:59 UTC on June 30, ETH retraced from an intraday peak of $2,499.19 to close at $2,487.19. A sharp upward move between 18:20–18:21 saw ETH climb 1.6% on 6,318 ETH volume, stalling near $2,499. As of 20:23 UTC on June 30, ETH traded at $2,519, up 3.49% in 24 hours, signaling renewed bullish momentum into the Asia open. New Ferrari Hypersail Project Will Be Like An Oceangoing Ferrari Hypercar From The Future

Construction of Ferrari's Hypersail project is well underway We all know the legendary Italian brands that produce some of the most revered fashion, cars, and yachts in the world. But Ferrari is different. Ferrari is a religion. And now that Ferrari has just introduced its new Ferrari Hypersail project, high-performance hydrofoiling sailboat technology might never be the same again. The Ferrari Hypersail project has just been introduced Led by Team Principal Giovanni Soldini, Hypersail is a research and development platform focused on offshore sailing onboard a 100-foot-long hydrofoiling yacht is designed by French naval architect Guillaume Verdier to stabilize its flight on three points of contact. Verdier's most notable innovation is the use of a canting keel as the support for one of the foils, with the other two contact points being a foil on the rudder and, alternately, the two lateral foils. Ferrari Hypersail's Giovani Soldini is one of the most experienced offshore racing sailors on the ... More planet 'Hypersail is a new challenge that pushes us to go beyond our boundaries and expand our technological horizons,' says Ferrari Chairman John Elkann. 'At the same time, it perfectly aligns with Ferrari's tradition, drawing inspiration from our Hypercar, three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Designing a yacht for offshore racing is perhaps the ultimate expression of endurance. 'Giovanni Soldini is a key pillar of this project, not only because of his achievements as a sailor but also his unmatched experience in yacht development and construction. The excellent teamwork between Ferrari and Guillaume Verdier is bringing into existence a unique boat that will fly across the oceans, representing a real opportunity for innovation in both the nautical and automotive worlds.' advance drawings of Ferrari's new Hypersail project 'I'm happy and honored to be part of this adventure,' said Giovanni Soldini, Team Principal of Hypersail. 'An exciting challenge, backed by a truly unique team that brings together Ferrari's excellence and the expertise of specialists in ocean sailing design. The meeting of different cultures and advanced technologies is enabling us to build a yacht that is revolutionary in many respects. 'From a nautical perspective, it's innovative in both its structure and how it will fly. On the systems front, Ferrari's contribution is driving the development of on-board control technology that has never been seen before. To prepare as well as we can for the variability and force of the phenomena and conditions encountered at sea, our top priority is to strike the right balance between the pursuit of extreme performance and maximum reliability.' According to advance reports the Hypersail project is aiming for close collaboration between Ferrari, its partners, and suppliers. This approach will be used to develop systems in the areas of aerodynamics, energy efficiency, power management, and kinetic energy. The Ferrari Hypersail project is being built now and will launch next year Technology transfer from the realm of Ferrari sports cars is also key. The yacht will sail with a flight control system developed from the expertise acquired in the automotive sector – employing aerodynamic and structural calculation processes designed to ensure performance and safety for a monohull that will sail across oceans for extended periods with no external support of any kind. The monohull is also designed to operate exclusively using renewable energy sources, including solar, wind and kinetic energy. There is no combustion engine on board, and all the power required to run the control and motion systems for the foils, keel and rudder, as well as the full suite of on-board computers and instruments, must be generated autonomously while under sail. Mama Mia! The prototype is already under construction and due to launch next year. Watch this space.

Many major US trading partners are hurrying to secure deals or lobby for extra time, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick telling reporters on Sunday that country-by-country tariffs will take effect Aug. 1. Trump has long threatened that if countries fail to reach deals by July 9, he would impose higher rates on them. Concerns about the potential for a growing US-led trade war have underscored gold's appeal as a haven asset. Bullion is up by more than a quarter this year, trading about $170 shy of a record set in April, with investors seeking safety in the metal amid heightened geopolitical and trade tensions. Inflows into bullion-backed exchange-traded funds have helped support the rally, alongside ongoing strong demand from global central banks.
