KSRTC buses to get real-time stop alerts, metro-like voice announcements
This will enhance passenger experience through accurate and timely information. We will also air the various public information released by government authorities through the system,' the official said. The licensee can play movie songs, movie scenes, and awareness messages in addition to advertisements, provided they have the acquired the rights for the same. At the same time, no political videos are allowed.
The successful bidder can generate revenue through advertising via the PIS systems. However, the same should be displayed through the PIS screens at a low volume without affecting the comfort of the passengers and the attention of the driver. The operator is also required to provide technical and on-call support round the clock.
Under the system, GPS devices will be fitted on the KSRTC fleet and connected to a central server. A separate tender will be rolled out to install PIS displays at all the main bus stations as well. The data from the central server will be sent to the PIS displays and a dedicated mobile app, 'Where is my KSRTC'.

Charge-draining ETMs spell trouble for KSRTC in Kerala; plans afoot to install charging points in buses
THIRUVANTHAPURAM: KSRTC is in a fix over the battery-draining electronic ticketing machines (ETMs), which are crucial for cashless payment and live tracking of buses. The conductors are hesitant to use the machines as the new machines drain their battery quickly, defeating the purpose. With over 22 lakh passengers relying on KSRTC services daily, the corporation has been forced to incur additional expenses to keep the ETMs running. Frequent recharging has become necessary, adding to operational strain. ETMs have long posed issues for KSRTC, but conductors earlier managed with traditional ticket racks when machines failed. However, this backup is no longer viable as the corporation has grown increasingly dependent on ETMs following its digitisation efforts. KSRTC recently introduced travel cards, UPI payment options, and live bus tracking on select routes, further embedding ETMs into daily operations. A KSRTC official acknowledged the difficulties but stated that a workaround has been devised. "We cannot revert to the old system of issuing tickets. To ensure the ETMs remain operational, we've decided to install 24-volt charging points in 5,048 buses," the official said.

No info on many buses, passengers seek changes to KSRTC's tracking app
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSRTC is facing challenges in promoting its new bus-tracking app among passengers. While concerns have been raised over its complicated user interface, the most pressing issue revolves around the attitude of conductors. The passengers have complained that the conductors often disable the tracking system, undermining the app's purpose, and refuse to accept digital payments. Voicing their frustrations on KSRTC's social media handles, the passengers pointed out that some conductors claim the tracking system drains the ticketing machine's battery, while others refuse UPI payments and travel cards. One passenger suggested that the app's bus-tracking feature be based on bus numbers. Currently, the app tracks buses based on their routes, which many find inconvenient. 'The live bus-tracking feature is especially beneficial for passengers who have reserved tickets. However, most long-distance buses are running hours late. Despite the launch of this much-anticipated app, passengers are still disappointed. There's no live tracking information in KSRTC's pre-journey messages. If you're lucky and patient, you may be able to change the location on the map and locate the bus,' said one frustrated passenger. In response to the criticism, KSRTC re-released instructional videos on Friday, showing how passengers can use the Chalo app to check bus schedules, seat availability, and make live reservations. The app also includes a feature to calculate the time it takes for passengers to reach the bus stop.

Service cancellations in KSRTC dropped after redeployment of employees, says Minister
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has witnessed a significant drop in service cancellations with redeployment of employees, Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar has said. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday (June 24, 2025), the Minister said 100 more buses will be operational in the State, and employees with health issues will be transferred to office work as per the doctors' advice, he said. The Corporation is planning to conduct an adalat to hear on minor offences committed by employees. Stating that inquiry counters in KSRTC depots will be discontinued, Mr. Ganesh Kumar said passengers will get all the information regarding KSRTC buses by downloading KSRTC Chalo App. He said that KSRTC card is now gaining wider acceptance. About eighty thousand cards have been distributed so far. Similarly, the Minister said that a new digital concession card for students will be launched soon. Students from Classes I to XII can use the card to travel on specific routes for 25 days in a month. Old landline phones will be replaced with mobile phones at all depots. 'Since they are smartphones, complaints can also be submitted through WhatsApp,'' the Minister said. Stating that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will decide the schedule of buses in the future, he said the applications have been invited to develop software for this.
