MMC Act Most Significant Reform In Journalism Landscape, Realised By MADANI Govt
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the MADANI Government had succeeded in realising the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) after nearly 50 years of anticipation among media practitioners.
'This is the most significant reform that we (MADANI Government) have introduced. With the establishment of the Media Council, media organisations can now independently and freely deliberate on matters such as journalistic ethics and the future of the media in our country, without interference or influence from any party, including the government,' he said.
'For us, especially our colleagues in Keadilan (PKR) within Pakatan Harapan, as well as our friends in UMNO who have long championed media freedom, this has become a reality with the establishment of the Media Council,' he said.
He was speaking at the Communications Minister and the MADANI Community session, held in conjunction with the Northern Zone B Akademi Asas Penerangan (ASAS) programme organised by the Department of Information (JaPen) at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL-MIMET) here today.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and JaPen director-general Julina Johan.
Fahmi, at a press conference following the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 main celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) yesterday, announced that the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Act would come into effect on June 14, 2025.
He also announced that he would soon hold a meeting with the 12 members of the MMC founding board to assist in shaping the council's next steps and future activities.
The three-day HAWANA 2025 celebration, which concludes today, is organised by the Ministry of Communications, with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency.

He acknowledged that while minor incidents persisted, the ceasefire largely held, reducing bombings and destruction. On regional issues, Anwar reiterated Malaysia's balanced stance on South China Sea disputes, highlighting the country's maritime borders with multiple neighbours. He stressed Malaysia's support for ASEAN's push for a Code of Conduct involving China and other parties. 'For 20 years, this has not happened. But the Chinese responded in Jakarta last year. They said yes, they will look at it. They are supportive,' Anwar said. Regarding US-China tensions over Taiwan, Anwar expressed optimism, stating that both nations would likely avoid military conflict. Malaysia and India to expand ties from education to AI
Deepening ties: Anwar having a meeting with Modi in Rio de Janeiro. — Bernama RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia and India have proposed to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The institute is regarded as one of the top higher learning institutions in India. The Prime Minister said Malaysia was committed to further strengthening peopleto-people ties through collaboration in culture, tourism and education. He said India was exploring investment opportunities in Malaysia's future-focused sectors – digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and aerospace. Anwar, who held a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit, said, 'We explored the great potential to expand strategic cooperation between Malaysia and India across various areas, including trade, investment, digital technology and defence.' Both parties, he said, emphasised the importance of ensuring regional peace and stability, and voiced support for just and peaceful resolutions to international issues such as those involving Palestine and Jammu‑Kashmir. Malaysia, Anwar said, welcomed efforts to reinforce the Asean-India relationship ahead of the Asean-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October. Anwar also had a bilateral meet with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. They spoke about reassessing various forms of cooperation across different fields and devising steps to expand strategic investments in in agriculture, automotive, tourism and the halal industries. Anwar also expressed appreciation for South Africa's support for the Palestinian people's struggle, including its tireless efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Consistent policies drive foreign investment, says Fahmi

Speaking at a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora on Sunday, Fahmi cited the Madani Economy framework, the 12th Malaysia Plan, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap as examples of coherent policies. 'These policies provide clarity and assurance to investors. They trust that such policies won't be changed arbitrarily.' He referred to recent data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia and the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry as proof that Malaysia continues to be a preferred destination for foreign direct investment. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, approved investments for the first quarter of 2025 totalled RM89.8bil, a 3.7% year-on-year increase, despite global economic headwinds. The gathering, held at Rumah Malaysia here, was attended by around 50 Malaysians, including students, professionals and staff from the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations. Also present was Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Datuk Nadzirah Osman. During the event, Fahmi also highlighted Malaysia's progress in the communications sector. 'Malaysia is among the top 10 countries in the world with the cheapest Internet, and we have the second fastest Internet speed in the Asia-Pacific region after South Korea,' he said, Bernama reported. 'This programme allows Malaysians in Geneva to share views with the minister and receive first-hand updates on current developments back home,' Nadzirah said. Syakira Ramli, Malaysian Association of Geneva president, said various topics were discussed during the event, including areas where Malaysia could improve by learning from Switzerland. For Malvyn Tan, the International Air Transport Association head of commercial fuel, the gathering provided an opportunity for the Malaysian diaspora to share feedback and express their views. 'I think Fahmi is very open and receptive, and this made us very comfortable to share our experiences while he shares the developments in Malaysia,' he said. Fahmi is leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event, from July 7 to 11, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen an inclusive national communications technology ecosystem aligned with Sustainable Development Goals.
