MCMC and Penang govt push Nexus app for better Internet access
GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is partnering with the Penang government to encourage wider public use of the MCMC Nexus application. The initiative aims to enhance internet accessibility by leveraging real-time data from users. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil explained that the app enables MCMC to take proactive steps in addressing connectivity issues without waiting for user complaints. 'This allows us to instruct telcos more efficiently to resolve problems,' he said during a visit to the Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) 4G tower in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas. The event was part of the 'Where There Are Roads, There Is Internet' programme. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz. The MCMC Nexus app features real-time internet quality monitoring and speed tests. Data collected is shared directly with MCMC and service providers for immediate network upgrades. Fahmi, on a two-day working visit to Penang, noted that the Tanjung Asam tower is one of five six-directional 4G MOCN towers built to improve connectivity in underserved areas. Other locations include Ikon Tengkolok and Bukit Putus Scout Camp in Negeri Sembilan, Prima Gambang in Pahang, and Kota Seri Langat Toll Plaza in Selangor. 'This collaboration between MCMC and telcos uses a network-sharing framework, allowing multiple providers to operate from a single tower,' he said. 'These towers support up to six telcos, making them ideal for remote routes with low population density.' The project received support from state governments and local authorities in securing permits and overcoming engineering challenges due to difficult terrain

Govt to boost highway Internet coverage with new connectivity drive
GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will collaborate with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) to identify nearly 50 kilometres of road nationwide that currently have no telecommunications coverage. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative is part of the government's commitment to the principle of 'where there's a road, there's Internet', aimed at improving connectivity along highways across the country. 'There are several key locations currently under discussion, and my hope is that these can be included in Phase Two of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), as many of these areas will likely require new tower construction. 'So, insya-Allah, we will assist,' he told reporters after visiting the YES Tanjung Asam 4G MOCN Tower during the 'Where There's a Road, There's Internet' programme in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas here today. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz, who is also Penang Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker. Fahmi also announced that the Communications Ministry is aiming to implement a proof of concept (POC) for direct-to-cell technology via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites in several locations during the third or fourth quarter of this year. He said the initiative is currently delayed due to technical issues, but discussions are ongoing with LEO satellite operators to address connectivity challenges in remote areas, including maritime zones. 'With this technology, satellites can act as cell towers from space. For instance, someone on the coastline would be able to contact authorities immediately in emergencies, such as drowning incidents,' he explained. 'In places like islands where building 60-metre towers may not be feasible, direct-to-cell satellite technology can be a viable solution,' he added.

Communications Ministry, two others recognised for cutting red tape
KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry is among three ministries recognised for successfully implementing reforms to reduce bureaucratic red tape, earning a special certificate of appreciation for the achievement. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the ministry significantly improved the approval process for foreign film scripts, reducing the timeline from 30 days to just seven, resulting in regulatory cost savings of up to RM2.4 million per production. "This, in turn, enhances Malaysia's competitiveness as a preferred destination for international film production," he said in a Facebook post yesterday. The ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, received the special certificate from Shamsul Azri at a ceremony in Putrajaya on Tuesday. Another ministry recognised for its achievement is the Housing and Local Government Ministry, where reforms were driven through the Fire and Rescue Department, which successfully reduced the approval time for Electric Vehicle Charging Bay Plan Certifications from 28 days to just three. He said the department also expedited the approval process for non-system-based technical plan certifications, reducing it from 30 days to just seven. "This was achieved through streamlined procedures and the strengthening of the e-Premis system and development of a central data repository, resulting in annual regulatory cost savings of RM1.776 million," he said. Meanwhile, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) successfully reduced barriers to financing in the aerospace sector, generating RM17 million in regulatory savings for 50 small and medium enterprises by boosting production capacity by up to 30 percent. "Gross profit margins increased by over 20 percent through automation and certification, further strengthening the supply chain and creating more high-skilled jobs. Reforms are being intensified and improvements accelerated," he said. Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Taib and MITI Strategic Planning Division senior director M. Punitha Veni, received the certificates on behalf of their respective ministries. – Bernama

MMC Act Most Significant Reform In Journalism Landscape, Realised By MADANI Govt
LUMUT, June 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Act, which came into effect yesterday (June 14), marks the most significant reform in the country's journalism landscape, realised under the MADANI Government. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the MADANI Government had succeeded in realising the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) after nearly 50 years of anticipation among media practitioners. 'This is the most significant reform that we (MADANI Government) have introduced. With the establishment of the Media Council, media organisations can now independently and freely deliberate on matters such as journalistic ethics and the future of the media in our country, without interference or influence from any party, including the government,' he said. 'For us, especially our colleagues in Keadilan (PKR) within Pakatan Harapan, as well as our friends in UMNO who have long championed media freedom, this has become a reality with the establishment of the Media Council,' he said. He was speaking at the Communications Minister and the MADANI Community session, held in conjunction with the Northern Zone B Akademi Asas Penerangan (ASAS) programme organised by the Department of Information (JaPen) at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL-MIMET) here today. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and JaPen director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi, at a press conference following the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 main celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) yesterday, announced that the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Act would come into effect on June 14, 2025. He also announced that he would soon hold a meeting with the 12 members of the MMC founding board to assist in shaping the council's next steps and future activities. The three-day HAWANA 2025 celebration, which concludes today, is organised by the Ministry of Communications, with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency.
