Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah alleged on Sunday that many National Conference (NC) leaders have been placed under house arrest to prevent them from participating in the July 13 Martyrs' Day event in Srinagar.
Earlier, the NC was denied permission from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha's administration in the Union Territory to attend the July 13 Martyrs' Day function in Srinagar.
'In a blatantly undemocratic move homes have been locked from the outside, police & central forces deployed as jailers & major bridges in Srinagar have been blocked. All to stop people from visiting a historically important graveyard containing the graves of people who laid down their lives to give Kashmiris a voice, to empower them," said Abdullah in an X post.
He added: 'I will never understand what the Law & Order government is so afraid of."

'Since last night, I like many of my colleagues, including the party leadership at Gupkar, the Advisor to the Chief Minister, and a majority of sitting MLAs have been locked inside my home," Tanvir Sadiq wrote in a post on X.
Sadiq is also an NC MLA representing the Zadibal assembly seat of Srinagar.
In a statement, police said that the Srinagar district administration had declined permission for the event and cautioned that any attempt to move toward the venue would invite strict action.
Participants were advised by the police to 'strictly comply with the instructions and refrain from violating the orders issued by the District Administration."
The ruling National Conference had approached the Srinagar District Magistrate seeking permission to pay tribute to those 'martyred" by the forces of Dogra Maharaja Hari Singh on July 13, 1931.
In a letter to the Srinagar DM, National Conference general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar stated that party president Farooq Abdullah, along with other senior leaders, intended to visit the 'martyrs'" graveyard at Naqshband Sahib near Nowhatta at 8 am on Sunday, July 13.
'It is requested to kindly confirm the proposed timing or allot the timing so that there is no confusion whatsoever in this regard…party will follow the timing as allotted," Sagar wrote in the letter.
July 13 is marked as Martyrs' Day in remembrance of the 22 individuals who lost their lives during a rebellion against Maharaja Hari Singh's rule in 1931—an event seen as a turning point that eventually led to the region's first-ever assembly elections.

SRINAGAR: J&K's Omar Abdullah-led govt has drafted a new media policy promising greater autonomy and space for digital ads, moving away from a set of 2020 norms introduced after the abrogation of Article 370 with stringent, security-driven clauses focused on curbing 'anti-national narratives and reinforcing control'. The draft Media Policy 2025, set to be unveiled soon for feedback, formally recognises digital platforms and social media channels for govt advertisement empanelment. The blueprint is a first of its kind after the Omar-led National Conference (NC) govt took office in Oct last year. Officials insisted the policy aims to redefine how govt communicates with the public, especially youths, who get most of their news online. The policy has a separate chapter on this titled 'Jammu and Kashmir Digital Media Advertisement Policy, 2025'. For govt ads, digital platforms must have been in operation at least three years and maintain verified and active accounts on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, or YouTube. Applicants must submit analytics reports, proof of office in Jammu and Kashmir, and two years of income tax returns. Private FM radio stations seeking empanelment must have been broadcasting commercially for at least six months, with 16 hours of daily programming. Community radio stations must show three months of operation with at least two hours of daily broadcast. Print media outlets must meet minimum circulation thresholds, starting from 3,000 copies for dailies to 5,000 for monthly publications. It also opens opportunities for university students, college students to participate in content creation through a competitive selection process in video production. To broaden the state's engagement, the policy also seeks to promote and support traditional and performing arts. The 2020 policy had come under strong criticism from political parties and journalists' associations as it called for background checks of newspaper editors, publishers and reporters before empanelment of newspapers and media organisations and outlets for govt ads. The 2020 policy also gave power to govt to examine the content of the print, electronic and other media for 'fake news, plagiarism and unethical or anti-national activities' and proceed against them. The policy started with describing 'J&K' a region 'having significant law and order and security considerations'. 'It has been fighting a proxy war supported and abetted from across the border. In such a situation, it is extremely important that the efforts of anti-social and anti-national elements to disturb the peace are thwarted,' the policy stated.

Chennai, July 31 (PTI) Madras High Court, hearing a plea that sought to restrain the state government from introducing or rebranding any scheme in the name of any living personality on Thursday said any new scheme to be introduced by the Tamil Nadu government should be strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. He also sought a direction to the Election Commission of India and the Committee on Content Regulation in Government Advertising to take necessary action against the DMK political party under Paragraph 16A of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968 and consequently forbear the state government from using the name 'Stalin' in relation to the activities of the scheme emanating from G.O. (Ms) No. 390, Public (Mudhalvarin Mugavari) Department, dated 19.06.2025 and thus render justice. When the petitions came up for hearing, Senior advocate Vijay Narayan, appearing for Shanmugam, submitted that the state government had introduced a scheme under the name 'Ungaludan Stalin'. An advertisement was also issued in which the photographs of three ideological leaders of the ruling party were published. The advertisement also carried the name of the Chief Minister and the DMK party election symbol. This was totally in violation of the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and the orders of the ECI. Therefore, the petitioner sent a representation to take action. But, there was no response, he added. He also said on August 2, the state government will be introducing another scheme. Therefore, the DMK party should be restrained from repeating the same in the forthcoming advertisement, he added. Advocate General P S Raman submitted that the photograph of the chief minister was allowed. The Supreme Court clarified it when it reviewed its earlier order. The advertisement, which the petitioner relied upon, was not the advertisement given by the state government, he added. Showing a copy of an advertisement given by the state government, Raman said there was no party symbol in the advertisement. Moreover, it carried a DIPR code at the right side bottom, he added. When the bench asked Vijay Narayan from where the petitioner got the advertisement, he said the petitioner got it from a Twitter handle. Senior counsel P Wilson, appearing for the DMK party, submitted that the petitioners projected a false case. It was politically motivated, he added. The bench asked the State government and the ECI to file their counters within a week. Thereafter, within three days, the petitioner should file his rejoinder.
