Kashmiri leaders locked in homes' in Srinagar, barred from visiting martyrs graveyard
SRINAGAR: Several mainstream political leaders in Kashmir, including from the ruling National Conference (NC) and opposition parties, alleged on Sunday that they were locked inside their homes and stopped by authorities from visiting the July 13, 1931 martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar's Nowhatta area. The leaders were planning to pay tribute to 22 Kashmiris who were killed by Dogra forces under Maharaja Hari Singh's rule, during a protest in 1931. The incident, observed for decades as 'Martyrs' Day' in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, was removed from the list of public holidays after Article 370 was scrapped in 2019. Senior NC leader and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said on X (formerly Twitter) that he and other party members were locked inside their homes since Saturday night. 'This is a deliberate attempt to erase history and deny us our right to honour the martyrs,' he posted. Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's advisor, said even ministers were not allowed to step out. 'All of us including ministers @JavedDar_NC and @sakinaitoo are locked in,' he said on X (formerly Twitter). The district administration had earlier denied permission to political parties to hold any gathering or visit the graveyard at Naqashband Sahib. Police warned that any violation of these orders would invite strict legal action.

Omar Abdullah Alleges NC Leaders Placed Under House Arrest On Martyrs' Day In J&K
Last Updated: The Chief Minister's post was in response to an X post by NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq, who claimed that he and several party leaders had been confined to his home since the previous night Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah alleged on Sunday that many National Conference (NC) leaders have been placed under house arrest to prevent them from participating in the July 13 Martyrs' Day event in Srinagar. Earlier, the NC was denied permission from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha's administration in the Union Territory to attend the July 13 Martyrs' Day function in Srinagar. 'In a blatantly undemocratic move homes have been locked from the outside, police & central forces deployed as jailers & major bridges in Srinagar have been blocked. All to stop people from visiting a historically important graveyard containing the graves of people who laid down their lives to give Kashmiris a voice, to empower them," said Abdullah in an X post. He added: 'I will never understand what the Law & Order government is so afraid of." The Chief Minister's post was in response to an X post by NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq, who claimed that he and several party leaders had been confined to his home since the previous night. 'Since last night, I like many of my colleagues, including the party leadership at Gupkar, the Advisor to the Chief Minister, and a majority of sitting MLAs have been locked inside my home," Tanvir Sadiq wrote in a post on X. Sadiq is also an NC MLA representing the Zadibal assembly seat of Srinagar. In a statement, police said that the Srinagar district administration had declined permission for the event and cautioned that any attempt to move toward the venue would invite strict action. Participants were advised by the police to 'strictly comply with the instructions and refrain from violating the orders issued by the District Administration." The ruling National Conference had approached the Srinagar District Magistrate seeking permission to pay tribute to those 'martyred" by the forces of Dogra Maharaja Hari Singh on July 13, 1931. In a letter to the Srinagar DM, National Conference general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar stated that party president Farooq Abdullah, along with other senior leaders, intended to visit the 'martyrs'" graveyard at Naqshband Sahib near Nowhatta at 8 am on Sunday, July 13. 'It is requested to kindly confirm the proposed timing or allot the timing so that there is no confusion whatsoever in this regard…party will follow the timing as allotted," Sagar wrote in the letter. July 13 is marked as Martyrs' Day in remembrance of the 22 individuals who lost their lives during a rebellion against Maharaja Hari Singh's rule in 1931—an event seen as a turning point that eventually led to the region's first-ever assembly elections. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Lieutenant Governor's Administration Denies Permission To J&K Parties' Martyrs' Day Request
Srinagar: The Lieutenant Governor's administration in Jammu and Kashmir has denied permission to all political parties, including the ruling National Conference, to attend July 13 Martyrs' Day function in Srinagar on Sunday. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah were expected to join the wreath-laying ceremony. In a statement, police said the district administration Srinagar has denied permission and warned strict action against any violator who tries to proceed towards the venue. The police have advised intended participants to "strictly comply with the instructions and refrain from violating the orders issued by the District Administration". The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference had written to J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha urging him to restore July 13 as a public holiday in honour of those who sacrificed their lives in 1931 during the struggle against British suzerain Maharaja's autocratic rule. July 13 is an epochal day in the history of Kashmir. It's observed as Martyrs' Day to commemorate the sacrifice of 22 people who led an uprising against the autocratic rule of Maharaja Hari Singh in 1931, which eventually forced the Maharaja to hold the first assembly elections in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1934, the Paraja Sabha - assembly was constituted in J&K, marking the beginning of the democratic process after centuries of autocratic rule, even as Maharaja continued to have sweeping powers on key matters. Since 2020, July 13 as public holiday and also the birthday of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah (National Conference founder) on December 5 have been dropped from the official calendar of public holidays. After winning elections and forming government in October last, the National Conference has been unable to restore these holidays even as it forms the bedrock of its politics. Since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the Union Territory administration has disallowed any function at the Martyrs' graveyard and even put Kashmiri leaders, including former chief ministers, under house arrest to prevent them from visiting the Martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar. The National Conference termed the L-G administration's order as deeply unfortunate. "On a day of profound historical and emotional significance for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the District Administration has chosen to bar peaceful tributes to the martyrs of 13th July 1931 at Khawaja Bazar, Nowhatta," said Tanvir Sadiq, chief spokesman of National Conference. It is deeply unfortunate that on a day of profound historical and emotional significance for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the District Administration has chosen to bar peaceful tributes to the martyrs of 13th July 1931 at Khawaja Bazar, Nowhatta. July 13 is not a routine… — Tanvir Sadiq (@tanvirsadiq) July 12, 2025 Traditionally, the party organises a wreath-laying ceremony at the Martyrs' graveyard before holding a public meeting on July 13. Other regional parties like PDP and Apni party had also announced to observe Martyrs' Day on July 13.

Friday prayers barred at Jama Masjid in Srinagar ahead of ‘Martyrs Day': Mirwaiz
The authorities on Friday (July 11, 2025) disallowed congregational prayers at historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, two days ahead of 'Martyrs' Day' in J&K. A spokesman of the Jama Masjid said Kashmir's chief cleric Umar Farooq was disallowed by the authorities to go to the mosque and was put under house arrest, 'fearing the mention of the martyrs of 13th July 1931 in his Friday sermon'. 'The sacrifice of these martyrs, and all the martyrs since, is etched in the collective memory of Kashmir and cannot be undone by restrictions and bans. No living nation can forget the supreme sacrifice of life of its martyrs against tyranny and injustice,' the spokesman said. He appealed to the authorities to remove the restrictions and allow people to peacefully pay homage to the martyrs of 13th July. 'If allowed as per tradition, the Mirwaiz will visit the martyrs' graveyard after Zuhr prayers and pay homage to the revered martyrs,' the spokesman added. Several J&K's regional parties are preparing to pay tributes at the graveyard in Srinagar on Sunday (July 13). Many parties, including ruling National Conference (NC) and J&K Apni Party, have written to the district magistrate, Srinagar, for permission to visit the graveyard on July 13. The Central government dropped July 13 from the official holiday list and ended the practice of official ceremony at the graveyard in Srinagar's Naqshband shrine in 2019, months after the special status was brought to an end. However, the NC, which came to power in J&K last year, is advocating inclusion of July 13 in the list of official holidays and re-start the practice of an official ceremony at the graveyard. 'It's deeply unfortunate and unacceptable that the Mirwaiz has once again been detained at home and prevented from fulfilling his religious duties. Silencing a religious leader, especially a day before 13th July, dishonours not just his voice but the legacy of our martyrs,' NC leader and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said. He said July 13, 1931, was a turning point in Kashmir's history, and a brave stand against tyranny and injustice. 'No bans or restrictions can erase the memory of that sacrifice. Kashmir will always honour its martyrs with dignity, peace, and truth. The NC will restore July 13 as a holiday,' Mr. Sadiq said. Meanwhile, BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said those who died in 1931 were 'goons and rioters'. 'It was a loot day for Kashmiri Pandits,' he added. July 13, 1931, was observed as 'Martyrs Day' in J&K to commemorate the killing of 22 civilians, who were shot dead in a rebellion against the Dogra monarchy.
