‘Superman' star Nathan Fillion staunchly defends his character's extreme hairstyle: ‘I was team bowl cut the whole way'

CNN6 days ago
Chances are you've seen the promos for the new 'Superman' movie and wondered, 'What the heck is going on with Nathan Fillion's hair?!'
The 'Rookie' actor is featured in the new DC Studios extravaganza as Guy Gardner, one of the comic book characters who is elected to a position of intergalactic law enforcer known as a Green Lantern (yes – like the Green Lantern that Ryan Reynolds portrayed in the 2011 film). In the new 'Superman' movie, just as in the pages of the comics, Guy rocks a severe bowl cut, complete with a mop of blondish bangs.
Fillion was on hand at the 'Superman' premiere in Hollywood earlier this week, where he was quick to defend the very unique (for a grown man, and definitely a superhero, at least) haircut, which some might feel doesn't translate seamlessly from page to screen.
Reminding us that the hairstyle is 'canon' to the original comics, Fillion told CNN, 'I don't think you can do a Guy Gardner without doing the hair. I think it would be a disservice.'
Adding that the look is 'integral to the character,' Fillion pointed out that it even may clue viewers in to Gardner's specific brand of bravado: 'If you see a guy walking down the street with a bowl cut, that guy clearly doesn't give a damn what you think about him. And that's Guy Gardner.'
Indeed, Fillion's Gardner is one of the many characters who provides brashness and comic levity to 'Superman' – somehow he gets by throughout the entire film with only Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) making one (much-needed) crack about his coif.
'I embrace the bowl cut,' he also said this week. 'There was some talk about trying different hairstyles, and I was team bowl cut the whole way.'
And while the haircut didn't pose too much of a problem for Fillion on the set of the new tentpole, something else about portraying the Green Lantern did prove challenging.
'Flying is so fun to watch, it's fun to do, but the harnesses that you have to wear, they're not built for comfort,' he shared. 'They're claustrophobic, they're very constricting, they're uncomfortable. I had a fist-sized purple bruise on my kidney from one.'
He added that the physical discomfort notwithstanding, he considers himself to be 'very very picky about flight in film, so it was extremely important to me to get it right. That was a challenge.'
Fillion has worked repeatedly with 'Superman' director James Gunn, ever since starring in Gunn's gross-out horror comedy 'Slither' in 2006.
Next year, Fillion will be reprise the role of Guy Gardner in a DC-based TV series titled 'Lanterns,' costarring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre and co-executive produced by Gunn.
'Superman' debuts in theaters on July 11. The film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is owned by CNN's parent company.

The LA farmer's market where celebrities are as plentiful as the produce

Even if you have never been to Los Angeles, you may still harbor a subconscious awareness of Studio City Farmers Market. There, amongst the 85 organic produce vendors, did paparazzi first snap Jeremy Allen White back in 2023 straining against the weight of freshly-cut flowers the size of his torso — a sight that has since become a viral sensation. So memorable is that sighting of White that it was even raised during a recent appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' 'You're always carrying giant bouquets of flowers everywhere you are, I love it. It's your thing,' said Fallon. 'I have this farmer's market near my house,' White said. 'It's on Sundays and I just love going there, I love having flowers in my house.' Apparently, so does every other celebrity within a 20 mile radius of the southeast San Fernando Valley, where Studio City Farmers Market — an LA institution that has been running since 1998, and White's farmers' market of choice — is located. So common are famous faces (Anne Hathaway, Jacob Elordi, Paris Hilton, Elle Fanning, Anwar Hadid and Barbara Palvin, to name a few) that Yelp reviews of the market often include an elated description of an A-lister sighting. On Getty alone, over 700 images are geotagged inside the space; while image platform Alamy features more than 4,000 photos shot there. Appetite for the market is growing, according to executive director of Studio City Chamber of Commerce, Esther Walker. Each week, she fields between five and ten vendor applications from growers and small businesses keen to sell at the storied location. First-time traders need not apply, Walker told CNN earlier this year, in light of the footfall of a few thousand that descend each week — which, for less experienced vendors, can be 'overwhelming.' 'Business is always nice for our vendors, but it is an extremely popular farmer's market,' she said. 'We're very crowded.' Despite White's recent endorsement of the market on prime-time TV, star power has always been part of Studio City's story. Walker began working for the Chamber of Commerce in 2007, just one year before the market's organizers made the decision to hire professional security. 'The reason was because we had so many issues with paparazzi,' she said. 'We had some really aggressive paparazzi that were following around actor parents with their kids and made them feel uncomfortable. We just felt like we needed to do something.' Currently, the market employs three security staff members, as well as three undercover security guards — all retired police officers. Paparazzi attitudes have evolved, however. 'I would say that the issues we had about 15 years ago don't really exist now,' said Walker. 'They tend to be a little more respectable, and they stay further away.' For Mike Arnoldi, an LA-based celebrity photographer, Studio City Farmers Market has been a certified hunting patch since it opened almost three decades ago. 'There's always been a steady flow of celebrities,' he said in a phone call. 'It just changes who's going to be there.' Back in the day, it was 'In Cold Blood' (1967) actor Robert Blake or James Franco, recalled Arnoldi. Now, it's White, Hilary Duff and 'Pretty Little Liars' actor Lucy Hale who he sees the most. Walker, who once swiftly recognized the market's A-lister clientele, such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, admitted that she was less familiar with the newer generation of stars who visit today. 'We get a lot of celebrities that my younger staff say, 'Oh my god, that's so-and-so from some show,'' she said. 'But I have no idea who they are.' Arnoldi — who counts himself one of the best celebrity spotters in the business — will start his day at the farmer's market around 9am and work straight through to 1pm, photographing on average around 20 different people. 'I shoot about 1,500 photos there, and then we narrow it down to about 40 that get sent out (to agencies like Getty and Backgrid).' His photos of White have been among the most lucrative, selling for around $400 each. Other celebrity shots can vary anywhere from a nickel to $20 — a far cry from the couple thousand dollars a photographer might receive for a single film image, before the advent of digital cameras. Any images that feature children, Arnoldi says, are not distributed. While it's not illegal, he considers profiting off the photos of children 'unethical' and urges his staff to do the same. Related vertical video With $10 million, you can buy a private island… or this handbag Not every celebrity wants their grocery run broadcast to the world, however. Lindsay Dix, who runs the bone broth stand ReBroth at Studio City with her business partner Mia Roe, says she has met most of her famous clients at the market — though several now order privately and have the soup delivered to their home. Not only is it more convenient, but it also prevents them from being 'out and chased around by the paparazzi,' she said. Dix added there's another reason for privacy, too: 'I used to do celebrity catering for 20 years, and a lot of people that claim to be vegan or vegetarian actually did eat meat.' Still, Arnoldi (who has made friends with many of the subjects of his images) has a handful of A-listers who feel differently. Some, he said, even call to give him a heads-up that they will be there on a particular day, bushels of lettuce in hand, hoping to be photographed.

Today in Chicago History: ‘Chance the Snapper' caught in the Humboldt Park lagoon

Here's a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on July 16, according to the Tribune's archives. Is an important event missing from this date? Email us. Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) Here are Chicago's hottest days — with temperatures of 100 degrees or higher — on record1887: Chicago recorded its first 100-degree day. When the Tribune reported on 'how fashionable people solve the hot weather problem,' suggestions included reading a book indoors, going on a canoe excursion or leaving town for a cooler locale. 1947: In one of the most furious slugfests in ring history, champion Tony Zale — 'Man of Steel' from Gary — lost the only one of his three middleweight title fights against Rocky Graziano. Zale lost the title he had held since 1940 on a sixth-round TKO in 100-plus-degree heat in Chicago Stadium. Zale later avenged the loss and regained the title. 1971: Princess Grace of Monaco spoke on 'Why Mothers Should Breastfeed Their Babies' during a conference in Chicago for the La Leche League International at the La Salle Hotel. The former Hollywood star joined the league in 1965, and said she breastfed all three of her children. 2004: Millennium Park officially opened. Former Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin called the project 'the best thing former Mayor Richard M. Daley ever did.' With its glistening Cloud Gate sculpture nicknamed The Bean (by the Indian-born, London-based artist Anish Kapoor) and raucous Crown Fountain (by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa), the oasislike Lurie Garden and festive Pritzker Pavilion (by Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry), the $490 million, 24.5-acre post-industrial playground, 'is the face Chicago wants to show the world, a dazzling antidote to the gun violence wracking city neighborhoods,' Kamin wrote in 2014. The Millennium Park that opened in 2004, four years behind schedule, was a supercharged version of the bland, Beaux-Arts proposal from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill that Daley initially unveiled. 2005: Real Madrid and David Beckham made their Soldier Field debut against Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara. The game was scoreless until the 73rd minute when Francisco Palencia banged one in for 10-time Mexican division champion Chivas. Vintage Chicago Tribune: Pelé, Hamm, Beckham, Rapinoe, Messi and more. When soccer's big names came to playThen in the 77th minute Beckham bent the ball on a free kick to Álvaro Mejía, who headed it into the Chivas goal to tie the score. Two more late goals got Real Madrid the win. Beckham gave one lucky local family the jersey off his back. 2019: After eluding capture for a week in the Humboldt Park lagoon, a 5-foot alligator nicknamed 'Chance the Snapper' appeared for a news conference with its trapper Frank Robb. The gator was relocated to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in Florida.
