PS5 consoles could break from hidden flaw claim fans playing latest game

Metroa day ago
The PS5's overheating issue seems to be getting worse, although the most recent problems may be the fault of one specific game.
Death Stranding 2 launched last week for the PlayStation 5 and while Kojima Productions has yet to share sales figure, the prestige of director Hideo Kojima and the success of the first game makes it one of the biggest new games of the summer.
At the same time, word is spreading that the game is causing some PlayStation 5 consoles to overheat, prompting demands for a patch to fix the issue.
However, some suspect that the PlayStation 5 itself is at fault, as a problem that's been known about for years is believed to be getting worse.
For context, the claims of Death Stranding 2 overheating consoles started with this Reddit thread. A Redditor named mudman2018 claims they're running the game on a base PlayStation 5 and have received overheat warnings when they have the map open.
'It's strange because everything else runs smoothly, even during long gameplay sessions. But the moment I bring up the map and start planning a route, the fan suddenly goes crazy and I get an overheating warning,' they say.
Plenty of other players report the same thing happening to them when using the map. They are also insistent that the issue lies with the game and not their console, with fans like iamthepower and Connorpreferspc saying they keep their console clean and in a well-ventilated area.

What's more, some report that this is happening on the Slim model too, and even a couple of owners of a PS5 Pro say their console gets hotter than usual.
That said, it's unclear how widespread the issue is. The Reddit thread only has 62 votes, and we can confirm that we never experienced overheating during our play sessions. We played it for over 50 hours (much of that during the intense heatwave of last weekend) and you have to use the map a lot, so if the problem was that common we should've seen some sign of it.
Unless Kojima Productions acknowledges the issue and offers an explanation and/or fix, it's entirely possible the fault lies somewhere else.
Apart from the current heatwave in Europe, it could also have to do with a known design flaw in the PlayStation 5. A couple of years ago, multiple tech experts reported on instances of the liquid metal used for cooling dripping onto other components when the console is stood vertically (the console we were playing on was horizontal).
This was a fairly uncommon issue at the time but just last week, Matthew Cassells, founder of Alderon Games, claimed it's become more prevalent, while speaking during an appearance on the Moore's Law Is Dead podcast.
According to Cassells, more and more PlayStation 5 owners, including his fellow team members, have reported instances of overheating when playing Alderon Games' Path Of Titans, a dinosaur themed MMO survival game.
Cassells said he got in contact with Sony and learned that because of the liquid metal issues, more intensive games have a higher chance of causing the PlayStation 5 to overheat and shut down. More Trending
He added that roughly 3% of Path Of Titans' player-base has been affected by the issue, which reinforces that it isn't widespread, but Cassells expressed fears that a lot of PlayStation 5 consoles could still end up dying within the next couple of years.
Sony has apparently tried to mitigate the issue with the Slim and Pro models, and it's been advised that everyone rest PlayStation 5s horizontally or at the very least ensure they use the console's stand if keeping it vertical.
It's possible this is the true culprit behind the Death Stranding 2 problem, but some claim the issue can affect horizontal consoles and even newly bought consoles.
As it stands, the true cause may remain a mystery unless a new patch drops, but if it is an issue with the hardware itself then this summer may expose the issue for even more people.

Halo team promises ‘official scoop' on series' future later this year

Amid rumours of a PS5 remake of the first Halo, a major announcement is set to be made in just a few months time. Last year, 343 Industries announced big changes were in store for the studio and the Halo series. For starters, the developer underwent a rebranding and is now called Halo Studios, dispelling rumours it was being kicked off the series. It also confirmed that more than one new Halo video game is currently in development, though there's still no official word on what any of them are. However, the team did show test footage of how future games will look in Unreal Engine 5, as the developer finally replaces the aging Slipspace Engine used in Halo Infinite. Anyone who hoped for a big reveal at last month's Xbox showcase was no doubt disappointed by the complete lack of Halo news, but that seems to be because it's being saved for the Halo World Championship esports event later this year. In a new blog post about the event, Halo Studios references how it used last year's event to detail the aforementioned behind-the-scenes changes and its plans for multiple games. As such, it intends to share the 'official scoop on what Halo Studios has been working on', so as to convince more people to attend the event live in Seattle, Washington, which is scheduled to run on the weekend of October 24. The blog acknowledges the 'fair amount of speculation about when and where more details might emerge about any of the multiple projects Halo Studios is actively working on,' but stops short of discussing any specific rumours. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. While we wouldn't be surprised if Halo Studios is teasing something more innocuous, the obvious assumption (and the one we're sure many fans will make) is that it's planning to properly show off one of the new Halo projects. No official details on any future Halo games have been shared yet, but a common rumour is that a new remake of the very first game, Halo: Combat Evolved, is in the works. Such a project could also see the series make its debut on PlayStation 5, thanks to Microsoft's new approach to releasing its exclusives on other platforms. Another of Halo Studios' possible projects is a new mainline game to follow on from Halo Infinite. Earlier this year, a March report detailed the long-term plans for Halo Infinite's post-launch period and how those plans were ultimately scrapped. It's possible some of those ideas are being reworked for a sequel, but Halo Studios could also have opted to start from scratch. Either way, the goal of supporting Halo Infinite for 10 years isn't happening, at least not to the degree the studio and Microsoft originally had in mind. More Trending While Halo Infinite is a solid game, its post-launch suffered from long delays, abandoned content, and behind the scenes mismanagement. The multiplayer was never abandoned though, and has still seen updates and manages to regularly attract a few thousand players on Steam. However, it's evident that Halo is no longer as significant to the Xbox brand as it was during the heyday of the original trilogy, which was handled by the now Sony owned Bungie. Nevertheless, the changes within Halo Studios suggest there's a concerted effort to revitalise the series, especially with it being described as the 'next chapter.' And while some diehard Xbox enthusiasts will balk at the idea of Halo on PlayStation (or Switch 2), it would certainly help reach a new audience, especially if the series really does go back to basics with a new version of the first game. EastEnders fans slam jarring BBC couple who were not a match

Zack Hudson and Whitney Dean were a prominent couple on the show who planned to get married before Whitney discovered her partner's unfaithfulness. Things famously came to a head at their wedding ceremony when Britney revealed Zack had cheated on Whitney. A furious Whitney then attacked Lauren and Zack before storming out of the registry office, according to Digital Spy. EastEnders fans slam 'jarring' former couple who 'weren't a match' on the BBC show Taking on the EastEnders official Reddit page, the original poster asked: "Did anyone actually like Zack and Whitney being together?" Fans of the BBC soap opera were quick to express their dislike of the relationship, with one user writing: "Always jarred a bit for me - the storylines about Peach, the fostering, Britney etc were good, but as a couple they felt a bit flung together. Which was probably the point IDK." Another agreed, penning: "Yeah, I felt the same. I wasn't keen on them as a couple (despite them both producing some good work together) and felt they weren't a match, either personality or chemistry-wise. "But this was by design and what they wanted to portray (given that Shona has known she was going for most - if not all - of that time)." One user said: "I did feel like their relationship came out of nowhere. I don't remember them interacting at all, and then she suddenly had a crush on him. "I didn't really like Zack until the Peach storyline, I think he supported her as best he could, and he seemed like he genuinely cared about her. "I think if Shona hadn't wanted to leave, they would have stayed together. They seemed like a solid couple before the Britney stuff, and I thought they were good together." Another fan added: "No, because I was annoyed that they didn't pair Zack and Sam together. All that build up and nothing, what a waste of time that was." Another echoed this dislike, writing: "Never. Zack was a playboy, and Whitney was a hypocrite with Lauren after she got with Joey while she was in rehab. Recommended Reading: "The dig at her being an addict just before her and Zack got together was uncalled for, too." However, one fan went against the grain, telling the OP: "Yes, I liked them together and was annoyed when he cheated with Lauren. "I'm hoping they don't put him and Lauren together. I don't know why, but I feel he could get with Zoe when she returns to the square"

Fans call Steam Summer Sale 2025 ‘mid' but there's a reason it seems so bad

This year's Steam summer sale has got PC owners upset at its lack of decent deals, but it is good if you haven't played all the Fallout games. If you have a Steam account, chances are you've already perused the annual summer sale, that's been running since June 26. The sale is scheduled to end on July 10, so you still have another week to look for new PC games to add to your backlog; some of which are seeing discounts upwards of 90%. However, there's a perception among the Steam community that this year's sale is disappointingly 'mid' or just straight up bad. Over on the Steam subreddit, a popular thread titled 'Worse than Spring Sale' is full of people complaining about the lack of big discounts, especially for major releases. 'The annoying part is some games having the exact same discount for years. Like bro, your game has six years, I think you can drop below 50% already,' complains Ryuko50. 'Steam sales ain't what they used to be, that's for sure,' says Far_Inspection4706, 'Back in the day I remember major titles getting up to like 90% off. Now it's like even with the sales almost none of the major titles are any cheaper than $20 – 40 still.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. They add that when some games cost upwards of $70 (usually £60), discounts of 20% don't make them feel that much cheaper. This can be seen in examples like Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin's Creed Shadows, both of which launched earlier this year. In the UK, they're normally £60 but are currently discounted by 20%. However, that still means they cost £47.99 and £44.99, respectively. Worse than Spring Sale by inSteam Similar complaints can be found in this thread on the PC Gaming subreddit, with the top comment by Eat–The–Rich– also decrying the discounted prices: 'There are so many 5+ year old games on 'sale' for $45+.' Others, like SenseiRaheem, are confused about some games being omitted from the sale entirely. Both The Last Of Us games, for instance, are still at full price, although other Sony published games, like God Of War: Ragnarök and Spider-Man 2, are discounted. So, is this a sign that Steam sales are progressively getting worse? Some Redditors argue that they've been dropping in quality for years, but there are other external factors to consider. As suggested by SgtRicko, the people complaining are probably long time Steam users who already have massive backlogs and have grabbed a lot of big name games through previous sales: 'Everybody's already got a huge Steam backlog and have been through several sales before, so it's no longer as novel and exciting.' A quick glance shows a number of games that are shockingly cheap, such as Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Alien Isolation, and Borderlands 3, which are priced at £5.99, £8.74, and £2.49 each. These are bona fide steals, but chances are a lot of people already added them to their backlogs during previous sales. There's also inflation. Games have progressively become more expensive, so when they get discounted, they're going down to the prices that older players have become nostalgic for. Metaphor: ReFantazio, for example, is usually £59.99, but its 40% discount brings it down to £35.99. An arguably good deal, but that's how much major game releases used to cost roughly a decade ago. So, if you've been using Steam and enjoying its regular sales periods for as long, today's discounts aren't going to look as appealing. More Trending Ultimately, these discounts are aiming for people who are new to Steam and don't already have massive backlogs. If you fit that category, we can highly recommend investing in the Fallout games since you can get the entire series for less than £30. With the discounts, here's how each of the game's currently costs: Fallout 1 – £1.99 Fallout 2 – £1.99 Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood Of Steel – £1.99 Fallout 3: Game Of The Year Edition – £5.27 Fallout New Vegas Ultimate – £6.39 Fallout 4 – £6.39 Fallout 76 – £8.74 There is also a Steam bundle that throws in the Fallout 4 season pass and a deluxe edition of Fallout 76, but that's more expensive at £68.15 (though still discounted by 43%). You can use the bundle link to purchase each game individually if you want to stick to below £30. If you want to see more of what the Steam summer sale has to offer, you can start with its home page, which features its top deals. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
