Angela Jones leaves door open in Brisbane premiership after frustrating day at Eagle Farm
The Brisbane jockeys' premiership race is still very much alive after leader Angela Jones failed to make the most of her opportunities at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Jones had a decent book of seven rides but couldn't break through for a winner and extend her narrow lead on apprentice jockey Emily Lang, who is sidelined while serving an eight-day suspension on a careless riding charge.
The 24-year-old Jones sits on 64 wins in the Brisbane premiership, two ahead of Lang, with just three metro meetings remaining before the season ends this month.

Lang returns to riding on Wednesday, hungry in the knowledge that she's still well in the hunt to create history and become the first female to win a Brisbane jockeys' premiership crown.
Both Lang and Jones work for Brisbane's premier trainer Tony Gollan, who is holidaying in Bali and missed the live action at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
There were several cases of 'close but no cigar' for Jones, who finished runner-up on Berezka ($3.50) and Spanish Treasure ($2.30), and third on Arisphere ($2.40), Brereton ($2.90) and Give Giggles ($4.80).
Jones' chance of securing the metro premiership took a big blow when she copped a 10-day suspension for careless riding at the Caloundra Cup meeting two weeks ago when she won the Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m) on The Three Hundred.

She returned to racing last Wednesday at Doomben but couldn't find a winner on the day.
Gollan's stable representative Craig Cavanough said after the final race on Saturday that it was coming down to a thrilling duel between good mates Lang and Jones.
'She was a bit unlucky with five placings,' Cavanough said about Jones.
'She's around the money and one thing about Ang, she won't let it get to her.
'She'll turn up again on Wednesday (at Eagle Farm) and ride them 100 per cent again.
'Ang is such a cool character and she never gets flustered.
'Not riding a winner today won't worry her. She'll be here on Wednesday ready to hook in again.
'The two girls are going good and it's nice to have them both in our team. It's a terrific duel between them.'
Jones' fiance Kyle Wilson-Taylor jagged a double on Saturday for Sydney's top trainer Chris Waller, winning on $11 chances Yet He Moves and Caboche in consecutive 1600m races.
There was drama in the penultimate race when trainer Gary Duncan lodged a protest against the winner Lead Me On which was dismissed by stewards.
Duncan and jockey Taylor Marshall, riding Ten Good Reasons, argued they were denied a chance at victory when Cobi Vitler shifted across on Lead Me On just 50m from the finishing post but stewards deemed it did not affect the result.

Gold Coast Suns postponed game against Essendon scheduled for Wednesday night as round 24 fixtures drop
The Gold Coast Suns' bid for their maiden finals appearance could go down to the last Wednesday in August. The AFL has released its round 24 fixture, including the postponed game between the Suns and Essendon that was unable to be played in Opening Round due to Cyclone Alfred. That extra game will now be played during what is a pre-finals bye week for the other top eight sides, scheduled for a 7:20pm bounce at Carrara Stadium on Wednesday August 27. The Suns are one of a number of sides battling for the final spots in the top eight, and there is every chance that match will determine their fate. Melbourne star Langdon 'shocked' by Simon Goodwin's sudden axing
Premiership winning Melbourne winger Ed Langdon says he's not sure the players needed a 'new voice' as they continue to come to terms with the axing of Simon Goodwin. Players were informed of their coach's dismissal via a Zoom call early on Tuesday morning. The 2021 premiership coach was axed late on Monday night after 11 years at the helm and a most recent win as large as 83 points. The news of Goodwin's departure broke on Tuesday morning, with some Demons finding out through the media ahead of being told by the club. Langdon, who will play his 200th game this Sunday against Western Bulldogs, was one of the senior players who was informed in a video call. 'It was obviously a big day yesterday, we were told in the morning in a Zoom call. We managed to get around to most of the other players as well before that dropped,' he said. 'It was a big emotional day, of course (it felt different on Wednesday morning), we've got a different coach coaching this week and we all loved Goody, he was a big part of the club. '(I was) definitely shocked, it's not the news I thought I would be waking up to. As I said, we are all very close to Goody, won a premiership with him.' Langdon has played 131 games for the Demons, all under the guidance of Goodwin, since crossing from Fremantle. Cameron Burgess eager to impress for Swansea City as he chases World Cup dream
Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess has returned to the English Championship with a new club and a determination to play well to ensure he's part of Australia's FIFA World Cup squad next year. Burgess played in the Premier League last season for Ipswich Town, who after just a year back in the top flight following promotion at the end of the 2023-24 campaign were relegated. It meant a return to second-tier Championship football for the 29-year-old centre-back, but rather than remain with the Tractor Boys, Burgess left Ipswich to join Wales-based outfit Swansea City on a three-season deal. 'It was a difficult decision,' Burgess told Swans TV. 'I loved my time there, and success in football is a tough thing to find, and we did that. 'The attractive thing about coming here is trying to replicate that. It was a big decision, but one I think I've got right. 'It's a big season ahead for Swansea but for me personally as well.' A good campaign with the Swans will go a long way towards ensuring Burgess plays at a World Cup for the first time in next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
