‘This isn't a novelty or aberration': Female jockeys set up for success in Queensland

Don't think it's just a one-off. A female jockey will soon create history by winning the Brisbane riding premiership for the first time, but expectations are that it could soon be the rule rather than the exception. As great mates Angela Jones and apprentice Emily Lang have been battling it out for the title, Brisbane Racing Club chairman Richard Morrison has been making plans to cater for the continuation of a trend that is reshaping Australian racing. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet IQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. As part of its broader refurbishment plans at Eagle Farm, Morrison confirmed the BRC is already planning to significantly expand the female jockeys' room to accommodate the growing number of women riding at the top level. 'It's something we're proud to support. We're not just responding to what's happening now, we're preparing for what racing will look like in the future,' Morrison said. 'The growth in female participation is real, it's sustained, and it's only going in one direction.' • 'Monumental for racing': PVL in talks for global racing channel Morrison, who was elected BRC chairman earlier this year when he replaced long-serving Neville Bell, feels there is a growing wave of female jockeys who are taking racing by storm. 'It's the first time a female rider will win the senior title, but it won't be the last,' Morrison said. 'This isn't a novelty or an aberration. 'It's a reflection of a changing industry and the incredible talent we're seeing from female riders across the board. 'Gone are the days where women were only given rides on outsiders as some kind of token gesture. Brisbane Racing Club chairman Richard Morrison (left) with BRC chief executive Karl deKroo. Picture: Liam Kidston 'Today, they have the trust of punters and the backing of the leading stables. They're riding the favourites and winning regularly. 'It's not just about the top two. 'Look at the apprentice ranks, there are 21 female apprentices and just eight males currently licensed to ride at provincial meetings in Queensland. 'Across the state, there are more registered female trackwork riders than male and the number of stablehands is similarly skewed. 'Thoroughbred racing across Australia would grind to a halt without the contribution of women.' • Rosehill, politics, the haters and his future: V'landys reveals all COBALT MYSTERY Peter Hulbert, 79, has been training for 48 years without any of his horses ever registering a positive swab ... until a recent cobalt case. It is surely one of the cleanest records of any trainer in Australia who has trained over several decades or more. And Hulbert, who trains with son Will, said he is gobsmacked at how former import Dillian tested above the legal threshold for cobalt. 'I've got absolutely no idea,' Peter Hulbert said. 'I will be looking through the (horse) feed and investigating how this could have happened. 'I had to go before stewards on Thursday and that was the first time in 48 years I have been called upon before stewards for a positive swab.' Dillian has now been disqualified by stewards from its win in a race at Eagle Farm in April and a $5000 fine imposed on its trainers.

Angela Jones leaves door open in Brisbane premiership after frustrating day at Eagle Farm

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Brisbane jockeys' premiership race is still very much alive after leader Angela Jones failed to make the most of her opportunities at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Jones had a decent book of seven rides but couldn't break through for a winner and extend her narrow lead on apprentice jockey Emily Lang, who is sidelined while serving an eight-day suspension on a careless riding charge. The 24-year-old Jones sits on 64 wins in the Brisbane premiership, two ahead of Lang, with just three metro meetings remaining before the season ends this month. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Lang returns to riding on Wednesday, hungry in the knowledge that she's still well in the hunt to create history and become the first female to win a Brisbane jockeys' premiership crown. Both Lang and Jones work for Brisbane's premier trainer Tony Gollan, who is holidaying in Bali and missed the live action at Eagle Farm on Saturday. There were several cases of 'close but no cigar' for Jones, who finished runner-up on Berezka ($3.50) and Spanish Treasure ($2.30), and third on Arisphere ($2.40), Brereton ($2.90) and Give Giggles ($4.80). Jones' chance of securing the metro premiership took a big blow when she copped a 10-day suspension for careless riding at the Caloundra Cup meeting two weeks ago when she won the Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m) on The Three Hundred. • Wilson-Taylor steps up for double with Waller She returned to racing last Wednesday at Doomben but couldn't find a winner on the day. Gollan's stable representative Craig Cavanough said after the final race on Saturday that it was coming down to a thrilling duel between good mates Lang and Jones. 'She was a bit unlucky with five placings,' Cavanough said about Jones. 'She's around the money and one thing about Ang, she won't let it get to her. 'She'll turn up again on Wednesday (at Eagle Farm) and ride them 100 per cent again. 'Ang is such a cool character and she never gets flustered. 'Not riding a winner today won't worry her. She'll be here on Wednesday ready to hook in again. 'The two girls are going good and it's nice to have them both in our team. It's a terrific duel between them.' Jones' fiance Kyle Wilson-Taylor jagged a double on Saturday for Sydney's top trainer Chris Waller, winning on $11 chances Yet He Moves and Caboche in consecutive 1600m races. There was drama in the penultimate race when trainer Gary Duncan lodged a protest against the winner Lead Me On which was dismissed by stewards. Duncan and jockey Taylor Marshall, riding Ten Good Reasons, argued they were denied a chance at victory when Cobi Vitler shifted across on Lead Me On just 50m from the finishing post but stewards deemed it did not affect the result. Angela Jones is in the box seat to claim the Brisbane metro jockeys' premiership despite Emily Lang claiming a double on Saturday

Angela Jones remains in the box seat to win the Brisbane metro jockeys' premiership but her nearest rival has certainly made it an exciting race following a double to Emily Lang at Doomben on Saturday. With the Queensland winter carnival done and dusted, the interest has now turned to who will become the first female jockey to win the Brisbane premiership. Lang narrowed the gap to just two wins on Saturday when she saluted early in the meeting on the Tony Gollan-trained favourites Sicilian ($3.10) and Lockyer ($1.60). Jones, who is serving a 10-day suspension and didn't ride on Saturday, sits on 64 wins, with Lang on 62. But here comes the twist to an intriguing tale of two talented jockeys. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. The 24-year-old Lang picked up an eight-day suspension for careless riding from the Sunshine Coast on the last weekend of the carnival and will miss the next two metropolitan meetings, gift-wrapping Jones the chance to extend her lead before the season ends on July 31. 'I don't know who's going to win,' said Gollan, who is the boss of both jockeys. 'They're both doing a good job for the stable and that's what is important for me. 'I'll be proud of whoever does win the premiership and we'll be there to support whoever doesn't win. 'It's a very exciting end to the season because this time of the year there's not a lot going on, it's off-season racing. 'To have something like this going on in the background, it adds a level of excitement.' James Orman was the runaway leader in the metro jockeys' premiership before he left to ride in Hong Kong in February, leaving him marooned on 45 wins. Lang went close to a treble late on Saturday when, for a fleeting moment, $41 roughie Fireforce looked like pulling off a huge upset in the last race before Noble Decree ($5) surged clear to win a 3YO Handicap over 1350m ahead of $2.70 favourite She Ours, with the Kelly Schweida-trained Fireforce just over a length back in third. Mister Bianco - a controversial late scratching from last week's Group 3 Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast - produced a terrific effort with a hefty 61kg on his back to go from last to fourth under Melbourne Cup champion jockey Robbie Dolan. 'I'll keep trying to do my best when I come back (from suspension),' Lang said shortly after hopping off Fireforce. QUEENSLANDER ðŸ‰ Lockyer digs deep to win the third at Doomben, and it's @emilyyplang again! She closes within two wins of Angela Jones ðŸ'€ðŸ'€ @tonygollan — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 12, 2025 'I'm sure Ang will put a few on me next week, the way she's riding, but we've both been getting very good opportunities. 'It's definitely going to hurt me a little bit next week, not being there to keep kicking on, but I can only do my best.' Gollan said whichever one of his star jockeys ended up winning the metro crown would have fully deserved it. 'They didn't get anything given to them in our stable, they've earned the rights they get,' Brisbane's premier trainer said. 'Both girls are there doing the work and they've done a great job all season. 'It's a shame there's only going to be one winner. They're both dear to the hearts of everyone in our stable and we're really proud of both girls. 'I guess it'll come down to who gets the rub of the green in these next few weeks.'
